Focal Length of 10-17 Fisheye; vs an 8-16mm

Good day everyone.

So i picked up a 12-24 about a year ago, and now I feel I want to go even wider. The Sigma 8-16mm comes to mind, immediately, but then I find out that the 10-17

1. appears rather rectilinear at 15-17mm(15mm appearing to be the limit) and
2. is, at 17mm, actually WIDER than the 12-24 is at 12mm(what?!).

So I'd like some enlightenment on this. I'm aware that the 10-17 is a fisheye. I'm NOT looking for a fisheye as i'm looking for wider angles for landscapes and interiors. However, from the (very) few shots of 17mm i've seen, i'm alright with that half-fishiness distortion, whatever you may call it.

However, if at 17mm the 10-17 is wider than the 12-24 at 12mm, how is one to have a better idea of how wide this 17mm is? It's most intriguing indeed.

CA on FA31 Ltd

Hi guys, recently i tested a copy of the FA31 Ltd, and when shooting at high contrast areas i've found images to have visible CA at 100% crop from wide open, decreasing as i stop down until I reach f7.1.

Of all the things that i know about this lens and also from the reviews in the lens database, people commenting on the presense of CA have been few and far between.

What I'd like to know is whether the lens is really resistant to CA, and why I am seeing the CA up to f7.1. As it stands i'm not too wavered in my decision to get one, as the aforementioned CA is not visible on a full screen, but only but clearly visible at 100% crop. Any feedback from owners of the lens?

Much appreciated!

Sigma 30 f1.4 - HSM?

I am aware that the sigma 30 f1.4 was previously offered to pentax only without hsm.

the sigma website now offers HSM for pentax mount, yet the lens database here still doesn't reveal so.

are there any difference in price(i'd expect so?) and performance(more importantly) between the hsm and non-hsm version?

thanks for all the opinions. it's good to know that i can't go wrong with any. the links put up here for me to see are nothing short of spectacular

by the way, is there anyplace i can compare the field of view between 10mm and 12mm? i do vaguely remember a thread here where someone did a comparison at a lake(or someplace like that). i'd like to know if the difference is as vast as i'm imagining it to be.

Poll: Which Wide Angle - YOU Choose

that is interesting to learn, thank you. for me i'd see each lens as an individual - certainly not from a prime vs zoom perspective. shouldn't whatever does the job best to your liking just be it??:p

by the way, going on by reputation and by versatility, i have developed my decision further into 2 options - i am leaning towards the DA 12-24 and the Sigma 10-20.

I'd like to ask, what are the pros and cons of the 2, and which is better? pardon me if this is a long repeated question - the search for a comparison isn't yielding results for me.

I have an option of getting a DA 12-24 2nd hand at the price of the sigma 10-20 new - given my situation, which should i go for?

my apologies to all the prime voters out there:p i appreciate your input, in any case. =) if you guys do have amazing stories of how the small size of the DA15 have made things significantly easier for you, i'd love to hear it too - who knows, maybe i'd be converted before i get to make my purchase.

Poll: Which Wide Angle - YOU Choose

My apologies for posting it in the wrong forum - the combined effect of a late night, with the ability to open multiple tabs:lol:

I read each and every of your replies and i'd like to thank each of you for your comments. To substantiate my question, I use a k-5, and my current widest is a Tamron 17-50mm.

To Ivan, I am aware that the 10-17 is a fisheye. While a fisheye was not my initial plan, it was included because a lookup on pictures has showed me that the Fishiness is quite low from 15-17, and I don't think I'd mind a Fishy 10-15.

To Jewelltrail, thanks for the advice. I'm pretty sure that there were many factors affecting the decision of each of the person who voted here. The factors may not apply to me, but(so) i don't mind looking at a globalised result in terms of popularity, all factors thrown into the mix.

To idkjai, ok, if size is not a factor for you(it isn't for me), then what would be your choice?

Another thought - Which lens is the downright sharpest? Is it the DA12-24 like what i perceive around here? It appears that people are steering away from it because of it's price - If you had no restriction on budget, would that be your choice?

Sincere thanks to all of you once again.

I'm searching for a wide angle lens and having looked through all the beautiful pictures in each of the candidates' respective threads, i must say i am nowhere near an answer.

I have come to a conclusion that any of them would serve me equally fine. I'm not picky. But I'd still like to know, if you could choose just one, which would you choose?

So here's where you guys decide for me.:p I'll just get the one that is chosen most in this poll. If i don't know where i want to go, i figure any road will do, as long as i set off on my journey.

If your choice isn't there and you insist i get that, feel free to drop a note. :p

thank you for sharing your experience, kxblaze. if the trade-off is a drop in IQ that runs circles in my head making me wonder whether there is a difference, i will most certainly put on a filter.

i have bought a $16 filters that totally ruined my kit lens's IQ, and hoya HDs that really set my mind at ease. i have not done testing with and without the hoya HDs but i must say thus far i feel safe that my lens is protected(from the need to clean, if anything), and IQ isn't degraded much.

i'd love to hear more experiences from you guys, with this lens in particular. the feeling that the glass being so far away from the filter intrigues me because my intuition tells me that there might be a factor of difference.

Yup, the title says it all.

Given that the glass is quite recessed into the body, the filter will be quite far away from the glass. If i put a filter on, does it degrade IQ more than it would usually?

Is a filter even necessary and on a side note, is constant lens-pen cleaning of a lens harmful to a lens? It's something that kinda niggles. Everytime i have to clean the dirt and marks off my attached filters(on other lenses), i'm so glad they are on, expensive that they were.

Thanks for the enlightenment:p

white or black K-x?

White for me and I loved it. If you ever change or upgrade, you can be sure that you will end up with black again. So since black is inevitable, why not take a shot with white now?

I'm saying this as I have a white k-x and a black k-5. I enjoy every moment with both.

By the way, if you are even asking such a questin, I reckon white draws you sufficiently enough. Go for it. It's a beauty =)

DA40mm difficult to handle

the basis behind the classification is rather dubious to me - and rather haphazard. why is a k-x Beginner and a k-r Intermediate? what makes a k-5 any more Advanced than a k-7? what makes a battery grip Advanced? can i not be a beginner and use a DFA 100mm Macro?

as a ranking system to assess a person based on his gear, hmmmm that MIGHT just cut it. but i doubt that is what they are doing. classifying gear in such a way, on the other hand, is not really logical. i'd ignore it if i were you. =p

Which Travel Lens? Sigma or Tamron 18-200mm

i have the DA18-250 and i must say wherever light is good, the lens is darned good.

for low light conditions, you'll have to look entirely somewhere else.

over the course of accumulating a few lenses that i use, the 18-250 now occupies my camera about 15% of the time only. but these 15% matter so much to me, i've changed my decision from selling it, to keeping it.

just another opinion you'd like to hear about =)

One question - will depth of field be different on APSC and full frame cameras? i thought that would be dependent only on the focal length of the lens used??

my apologies if the answer was somewhere in one of these 11 pages!!

well, i bought the k-5 already, yet this was the first thread that i clicked on today.

given that the d7000 is a direct competitor and we seem to be having the upper hand here, i must say I do care and I'd like to know more about the d7000 while surfing PF. this is especially so if we have the gathering of opinions of fellow Pentax users, and makes for a very interesting and useful point of view.

also, being of the same generation as the k-5 and being one of the most compared to the k-5 pre-release, i'd think it warrants to a certain extent a short place here. i don't look into Non-Pentax cameras section so i'm pretty glad it's here.

hi, here are my two cents.

i don't need it definitely, but i want it so much, i think it's worth spending a little on it.

part of the joy of this hobby stems from the tools as well, don't you think so?

i'd say if it is within your means, go ahead and be happy =P
