To get Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 or FA 50mm F1.4

Hi fellow Pentaxians,

I have been using the K-x for two months and feel like expanding my hobby. I am deciding on a Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8 and Pentax FA 50mm F/1.4. My main reason of buying a new lens is to have a bigger aperture so that I can do better under low light condition and better sharpness(the kit lens is soft at 18mm and 55mm). Of coz, the two lens above are different.
As in the Tamron, I will get variable focal length from 17-50 which is very flexible like the kit lens. On top of that i get F/2.8.
As in the FA 50mm F/1.4, I get so much more light and supposedly superb sharpness.

Therefore i have done some research on which of these two lens suit me more.
I tend to favour the Tamron 17-50 because of the following:
1. I get 17-50 which is a BIG factor for me as i can take it with me during travel! And FA50mm is fixed at 50mm which mean that i might missed some shot if there condition cannot be control (like taking landscape.
2. F2.8 across all focal length is an improvement over kit lens but not like f1.4 which is super fast
3. The FA50mm F1.4 is very soft at 1.4. Lens's sweet spot (around F2.8-5.6) according to Pentax SMC FA 50mm F1.4 Lens Review: 4. Test results: Digital Photography Review. Which meant that the Tamron is superior as i get 17-50 at the FA50 f2.8

And to add on, how much better is the sharpness of tamron 17-50 against kit lens? A tiny bit?!

I am an astronomy as well as photography hobbyist. Consequently, I had always wanted to do a milky way shot. I just got my K-x not long ago and took it on a short getaway to P.Redang Malaysia.
I took this shot at P.Redang and was quite happy with the result considering that i was using only a kit lens and a budget DSLR. I thought that i wld only see a faint streak of stars.

20shots and 10 dark frames

15secs @1600
18mm f/3.5
Remote Shutter Release
Velbon Ultra LUXi II M Tripod
0100hrs
Windless night
Stacked using DeepSky Stacker and edited using Photoshop

Landscape A Panorama Shot at Pulau Redang

Hi fellow frens,

I just bought K-x recently and its a really good entry level DSLR. Im planning on a getaway to Pulau Redang next week. Its a great place to make good use of the K-x.

Last year, I took this pano shot using a Point n Shoot Canon A590IS. I'm very happy with this shot and want to improve it even further using the K-x next week!

Plz criticize

1. In what area is critique to be sought?
The whole picture, composition, exposure and technique

2. What I hopes to achieve with the piece of work?
to show the VASTNESS of the beach and ocean, the blue crystal clear water and the whole stunning scenery

3. Under what circumstance is the picture taken?
at the highest platform i can reached, a balony at noon time.

4. What do I personally think of the picture
I think that the coconut tree is a bit distracting. Other than that i really dunno what can be improved.

Hi ppl, thanks for all the feedbacks. Im on tight budget as i'm still serving e army.
My next lens would be smc PENTAX FA 50mm F1.4. It seems like quite an old lens and at any time, its going to be out of production? That way, i need to seek for alternative lens and that may need larger diameter and my CPL is a pity to use only on kit lens.
sry for me being indecisive!

Do I need to use CPL filter for Prime lens?

Hello

I've a K-x with dual kit lens (18-55 & 50-200). I see myself a need to get a CPL filter because of its amazing property to see into water, darken blue skies, remove reflection. Cost is a factor for me. I don't want to invest on a CPL that is too $x and good that a kit lens cannot show its quality.

I see myself owning a good prime lens particularly the smc PENTAX FA 50mm F1.4 Lens which is 49mm in the future. So I can get the 52mm CPL for kit lens and then buy a step down ring to use for this prime lens.

BUT im concern of buying a low-mid grade CPL that will mask the sharpness and clarity of a prime lens. I would like to know does people use a CPL on prime lens like 50mm F1.4? To me CPL seems to be used more on landscape, beach and water where prime lens is rarely use. If true, I can just a ahead and buy a budget CPL for kit lens and forget abt prime lens

This is a dilemma.

This is my 1st time using clone tool. I used it to clear away the buildings in the backgrd.
I hope the photo is pleasing. I want to make it look like old times. I added noise, vignetting , and sepia look. I'm quite happy with the result.

What do you all think?
