43 vs. 55

Hi, Condor.
Since you already have got other FA limiteds, then you should be aware of what to expect from FA43. I don't have this lens, but I do have got the DA*55 (and three DA limiteds too):
- DA*55 is not fast on focus (if I had to then I'd bet my money on the FA43 to be slightly faster), but it is quiet. It isn't slow, but it isn't fast either;
- DA*55 has got that naughty backlash on the focus ring in the MF which isn't that awful, but don't expect to get any joy when manually focusing this lens - MF is workable, but not exciting (FA limiteds - or DA limiteds - don't have this MF freeplay in the focus ring). Focus throw is around 120-145 degrees, this isn't a MF-lens from ol' film days, but it's significantly better in this regard then most modern DA lenses, even DA limiteds, though I don't how it compares to FA lims;
- in terms of resolution at f=1/1.4 it is just a good ordinary F1.4 lens, not a bad one, but not something astonishing. One stop down and it noticeably improves and in the f=1/2.8-1/5.6 range it really shines;
- all the limiteds are very nice at tactile level - like when you do the MF thing and such - until it goes really cold around. At -10F you can your fingers literary and literally iced to the lens and your skin will peel off when you remove your hand off the lens, which doesn't happen with plastic-coated DA* lenses like DA*55.

All in all, I bought the DA*55 specially for portraits and for portraits only and I'm quite happy with this purchase. I've listed all the cons above (I added one FA con for a sake of balance) so if you're ok with them, then go for it and you'll be happy with its pros (like color rendering, bokeh, level of aberrations, flare-resistance and so on). If you feel like you are not quite ok with those cons, then go with the FA43 and that's it.

Hey, Nick!
First of all, my congratulations on your new toy! Thanks for sharing your resolution test results, but this test was just among other similar tests posted internet-wide. I wonder if you feel like you're going do something special: what about evaluating the optimal shooting (focus) distance that this lens is designed for? I'm not aware of any such test at all, let alone FA31 model we're talking about here, so if you compare (and share your results here) the per-aperture sharpness at MFD, 1/3 focus throw, 2/3 focus throw and infinity, then you'll be one of a kind!

Looking fwd to seeing your findings,

P.S.
DT,
There are different types of radioactivity like alpha-radiation, gamma-radiation and so forth. I'm not sure what that sensor is sensitive to and I'm kinda lazy to lurk around for its specs, just adding 2c to your very intriguing and interesting post. And since your measurement setup is quite sensitive to its own design and layout, it would be very nice should you have added measurements for some well-known nukes like bananas, coal, granite or nuts so we could have the base-line to compare the lens radiation to.

Thanks,

Don,
if you consider the lens performance to be mostly of sharpness/acuteness type of thing, then yes, you'd better sell your HD15 and get a brand new (or even good used copy of) DA12-24.

DA 15mm Infinity focus question
Posted By Siegfried

lytrytyr,
yes, I do. Those focus distance tracks which focus distance fork runs on are designed to mean what the distance scale is telling you, though Pentax doesn't do this thing that precise as Canon does, so far I've seen only 4 codes: macro as MFD, close focus, distant focus and hyperfocal a la infinity while Canon EXIF data can be used almost as a ruler. My DA15 copy was so badly factory-adjusted that it never showed me infinity in the EXIF data (or I had to manually twist it beyond infinity[*]) until I cracked it up and had it adjusted by myself: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/10-pentax-slr-lens-discussion/145797-da15...ml#post3428544

(photo snatched from DCShooter's DA15 disassembly guide)

Zig
[*]
update:
I just looked at the published photo and it appears that my memory may no longer serve me right: probably it is the MFD (= Min Focus Distance) focus distance EXIF code that never appeared in the EXIF data until I had the lens adjusted.

update2: I just checked my old shots and it looks like I was more correct at the former rather then later. It is the infinity focus which was coded as 'close focus' with factory infinity lens focus setting.

DA 15mm Infinity focus question

John,
this does not indicate any potential problem. As for the first part of the question, it is a tricky one (assuming you carefully examined your photographs and you confirmed the lens focused properly at infinity. If you didn't, then you'd better have this done since you may just need to AF-adjust this lens, see K3/5 user manual for AF adjustment guide):
- many DA15 lenses behave this way;
- but some - lucky ones - do not;
- this is due to Pentax low quality control (but Pentax isn't the only one, see below);
- you can have this lens serviced at a shop or on your own, you only need screwdriver set (JIS preferred over Philips) and a rubber tool to remove the front ring. The lens disassembly procedure has been covered here on pentaxforums several times;
- many lads and lassies consider this behavior to be okay and normal, but the truth is that it isn't (this isn't normal even for short-tele lenses, let alone ultra-wide angle prime one), it's all because of cost savings which is the main trend of nowadays;
- if you don't do manual focusing and if you don't use any software in post-production which utilizes EXIF focus distance data to correct the perspective distortions, then you can leave this as is.

Cheers,
Zig

No, incorrect. With either PDAD or CDAF you don't need AF to go past infinity to be able to properly focus at infinity.
And you can do your own math to calculate the shell/helicoid size deviations caused by going from one operating temperature to another which will show you that even short-tele fix-focal lenses do not need to go beyond infinity, let alone ultra-wide angle ones.

kh1234567890,
as for your earlier post re DxO: yes, it is stupid to read just what exif data says. And having wrong base settings (inf focus) it improperly corrects perspective distortions at close-up shots since it assumes the focus distance to be 'distant' while it may be 'close' or 'macro' (I haven't yet read it in hex so I don't know what certain values stand for those distance types).

Driline,

should you care mostly about sharpness, then drill all the reviews of DA12-24/4. I've yet to hear about a lens sharper then this one in the K-mount. But then you'd better be shooting RAW and utilizing Lightroom/DXO Optics in post-production because Pentax Quality Control is quite low and noticeable amount of reviews of this lens claims it fringes badly. But I haven't personally shot with this lens, it was simply on my list when was going ultra-wide thus I had to read about it.

As for the 15 Limited, I've been shooting with it for last 4+ years. It is small yet perfect-sized and it looks and feels exceptionally amazing. Excellent flare resistance (for those 4 years there happened merely a dozen of shots with any flare among thousands w/o it), low level of chromatic aberration (but I shoot RAW and develop the photographs in DXO Optics which has DA15-profile built-in), low level of distortions. And then there're those famous DA15 starbursts!
(see here: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/10-pentax-slr-lens-discussion/310177-best...st-lenses.html)

The only downside with 15Lim is... Actually, there are two of them:
- low quality control means that 90% chances (*) are you'll have to adjust the infinity setting on your lens. Not a big deal at all, it's almost like doing the DA 21 (here: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/10-pentax-slr-lens-discussion/307768-diy-21-lim-service.html), you only need one extra tool which is the rubber tool to unscrew the front decorative ring. And you can live with improper infinity setting if you prefer LR to DXO (the latter uses the focus distance information coming with EXIF data which is screwed if the lens isn't properly adjusted to infinity setting).
- the lens isn't designed for sharp landscape photos: even if you stop it down to f/8 or f/11, the borders aren't quite up to the center (which is good right at f/4 and very good at f/5.6-11). For sharp landscapes/architecture I use the 40 Limited and do the panorama shooting which the DA/HD40 is perfect for.

Zig,
who doesn't do the landscape thing and uses ultra-wide lens for getting mostly an exceptional perspective or just for plain wide field-of-view.

(*)
Yes, this fall I checked several brand new lenses at local shops and even the new HD version - where Pentax tighten up the things with QC - went past infinity.

Driline,
I'd recommend the DA12-24/4 if you use wide-angle for landscape and architecture, thus looking for sharpness/resolution. If you feel you're ready to trade resolution for something else, then consider having a look at the 15 Limited (but do not buy the 15Lim for resolution, this lens isn't designed for that). If either option goes a tad over your budget, then my recommendation is to tighten it up and spend extra getting better product and being happy with it rather than buying what fits your bills and then lurking around for something better. It's just like getting with lassies, you know.

Does anyone prefer DA 40 over FA 43?

gs,
yes, DA40 is sharp right from f/2.8 - and, moreover, it is sharp all over the frame. So if the only thing you care of is sharpness, then you've got to go for DA40. But if you consider the other things too - like scene rendering - then stop where you are: DA40 has a damn awful bokeh. It is just plain bad. You'll struggle against this lens for getting nice smooth highlights blur and you'll lose most of the time. Though if you do the web-prints only limited to smth like 1024x680, then it may not be too much of an issue (that's why you will not see it here on PF where 99% of the pictures are resized down to 1024x680 or even 800x533), but even at full hd resolution (1920x1270) it is quite pronounced, let alone bigger prints.

Here's a 1:1 crop of a mid-sized 1920x1270 print:
Attachment 294153

There will be a hack of a learning curve with this lens. But if you master with it, you'll be a damn good photographer able to drive and get a decent shot from almost everything.

Attachment 294154

Oh, and it is really small lens. It is really really small lens. It is a damn small lens! It is so small that it will challenge your Freudian unconscious! It is indecently, obscenely tiny! Every time I look at it I can't help but think of that famous Interstate 60 scene:

You Tube

But yes, it is sharp. Moreover, it is uniformly sharp across the whole frame starting right from the max f/2.8 - and it also has a very good flare resistance.

Bottom line: do I recommend going for a DA40 (whenever SMC or HD)? No, I do not. But if you decide to give it a try, I will wish you good luck.

Zig

P.S.
Although I haven't got the FA43.

Na Horuk,
thanks a lot for your vote, but you had to choose 50mm since the focal length in question is the FF(full frame aka 135 format)-equivalent: 35mm lens on APS-C behaves like 50mm on 36x24mm format. I dunno if this site gives you ability to revert and replay (re-enter) your vote.

What focal length is normal for you, giving you the naked eye perspective and field-of-view? As there are two main genders - like males and females, 35mm and 50mm in FF/135/36x24mm terms - I decided to add a couple of extra variants to keep this poll tolerant as they do these days. Please remember to apply appropriate multiplier should you be APS-C/PentaxQ/645Z/whatever shooter:
  1. choose 50mm variant if you shoot APC-S camera and find 30-35mm lens to give you normal perspective and field-of-view

  2. choose 35mm variant if you shoot APC-S camera and find 20-24mm lens to give you normal perspective and field-of-view

  3. choose 85mm variant if you shoot APC-S camera and find 50-55mm lens to give you normal perspective and field-of-view

  4. the last variant is intended mostly for fun and for those who are uncertain or do not quite know what this all is about

What can one learn from a lens serial number?
Posted By Siegfried

Sometimes the serial number is a good indication on the lens generation if this model went thru several of them. E.g. see the history of the FA* 85 or 31 Lim (the former features different design versions while the latter can me assembled in Vietnam vs made in Japan). Nevertheless, it is a good practice to always declare the serial number for the lens on sale and confirm it with the actual photo - even if the lens design wasn't changed thru the years and the lens has been coming from the only production facility.

Manual Focus Hit and Miss

Alex,
the AF module - which among other things toggles that in-focus beep- and dot-assistants on and off - works with ANY lens attached, even with old M ones. For an PKA-mount lens which is able to communicate with the camera and has a lens ID it is the 'Apply one' setting in the AF micro-adjustment menu to dial the focus. If a lens isn't able to communicate with the camera - either because it is of Pentax-K or Pentax-M type with dummy K-mount or because its KA-, KAFx-mount databus is kaputt - it is the 'Apply all' setting in the AF micro-adj menu which goes used by the AF module to toggle those focus assistants on and off.

To all,
unfortunately, all the 3rd party split-screen and matte focus screens for APS-C Pentax cameras which are on the market have more or less wrong thickness thus it is mandatory to carry out the focus screen position adjustment. Some focus screen sellers offer adjustment shims, but if your screen came w/o those shims, feel free to make your own ones from aluminum foil found somewhere in the kitchen or taken from a candy. This adjustment is a pain in the ass, but it is a must.

Zig,
who has been shooting with several focus screens + O-ME 53 v/f magnifier and MF primes for 5+ years.

Dear house,

1) that very front (beauty/decorative) ring is indeed fixed with that very double-sided adhesive tape. This tape can handle several ring removals and re-installations without any noticeable adhesion performance decrease. Moreover, you can leave the ring off if you like the look of the lens without the ring;

2.1) to fix the lens wobbling you better start with tightening the lens assy (barrel) side screws which hold the plastic rollers. Don't apply too much force or you'll crush the plastic. If the wobbling is still there even after you have checked all those rollers, then the only way to get rid of it is to grease the helicoid - see my original post on the greasing tips and hints. It is a good idea to remove the roller screws (not all at once, but a screw by screw) and have them re-installed with a thread-lock after you practice with applying the proper torque when tightening those screws;
2.2) I don't fully understand your question re bits being minutely misaligned. Anyway, here's the infinity setting guide:
- having your DSLR on the tripod and set into the manual focus mode mount the lens dialed to infinity setting;
- take a picture, remove the SD card and download the photo onto PC (laptop, whatever);
- re-install the SD card, halfway undo those three screws which clasp the focus ring to the focus base-plate, and using a toothstick or such (e.g. an awl, a spoke, tweezers, a T5 screwdriver mentioned on the original post and so forth) rotate the baseplate two hole clockwise (or anti-clockwise), reposition and tighten the three screws to firmly mount the focus ring onto the focus base-plate;
- double-check your lens to be set to infinity, take a photo having DSLR in MF mode, remove the SD card and download the photo onto PC;
- compare the last photo with the previous ones zoomed to 100% resolution, repeat the steps above until you've got a perfect contrast/resolution;
- remove the three screws and have them re-installed using a thread-lock compound.
USB-tethering (lurk for PK Tether software) can be handy, though optional if you're ok with jogging with SD card.
After you have your infinity focus lens setting adjusted, check and complete the DSLR AF micro-adjustment.

Good luck,
Zig

Just noticed that I forgot to have it mentioned (though it is obvious, but in a world where they say "CAUTION! Just to make it clear and have the case closed: no, this isn't the normal behavior for the DA 15/4 Limited. Cannikin and elho_cid just do not know that they are talking about. This lens isn't designed to be operated in a wide temperature range and it is a wide-angle lens of a pretty simple design. This fault is a result from pour Pentax QC (quality control) and should be fixed. Details and instructions on lens disassembly can be found the PF lens disassembly database: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/114-maintenance-repair-articles/179884-pe...-database.html
Or one can estimate what to expect when going inside from my DA 21/3.2 post since both 21 and 15 Limiteds share about the same structure: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/10-pentax-slr-lens-discussion/307768-diy-21-lim-service.html (ADDITIONALLY you only need the rubber tool to remove the front decorative ring: 15 Lim have it screwed while 21 Lim have it glued using adhesive tape).

Good luck with your DA 15/4,

Hi, fellas.
There're several similar threads and posts about what's inside DA 21/3.2, but they are a bit unclear here and there and contain some errors. So I think it is worth to come up with mine. The background: I've finally come to a conclusion that I'm the 35mm-normal photographer (as you all know there're photographers who consider 50mm effective focal length to be the normal one and there're photographers, whose normal is around 35mm) and since Sigma isn't going to bring the 24/1.4 in the K-mount to the market, I've got no other choice, but to buy the DA 21 Limited. An order placed and in a week and a half later used - but as new! - lens is picked up.

I already own a copy of DA 15 Limited (bought brand new) and I do know what a Pentax Limited is about: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/10-pentax-slr-lens-discussion/145797-da15...-infinity.html
I had to open it and grease it and to optically adjust it before it started to feel, look and perform like something worth the Limited badge. And since the DA 21 is well known for coming apart - SUDDENLY! - there was no question if I should service it or not, but rather if I should have it done today or yesterday. So, if yours is going past infinity or can't reach the infinity focus or wobbles like a junk in the pond or you just got a brand new copy and are afraid whether it is going to break in half or not - read on!

N.B.: from my experience of reading people dissecting lenses, many of them are mechanically impaired so I decided to explain almost every step in detail. If you know the stuff well and don't need the basics, then you'll learn all you need from the pictures.

1. Here're the essential tools required:
Attachment 288226
Clockwise:
- a container to clean the screws;
- a thread-lock compound;
- a thread-lock remover (I prefer the acetone, but it stinks and you can easily damage the lens coatings, be careful);
- a tube of proper grease (main feature: must not vaporize giving you haze on the lens);
- precision screwdriver-set;
- a cotton-bud;
- a toothstick;
- tweezers;
- a clean A4 sheet of paper, A3 preferred.

2. Do not do anything on the rear-end. DA Limiteds are designed to be opened from the front. For a start you've got to remove the center decorative ring (or beauty ring as some say). See the next two photos on where to apply your 1.5mm flathead screwdriver and what to expect:
Attachment 288221
Attachment 288222

3. Using a proper-sized screwdriver (Number 0 if you speak metric or JPS #something if you're from the XIX century) undo those three screws and remove the front plate assy. Beware, whenever you use too big or too small screwdriver, you will damage the screw head. See the 11- and 3-o'clock screws on the photo above (I started with a Number 00 screwdriver but changed it to the proper one right when I felt that it gonna eat those screwheads).

4. Ok, here's the main assy:
Attachment 288223
The four center screws hold the optical unit while the three screws around hold the focus ring to the focus base-plate. Those three are the screws which all the oh-my-da21lim-just-fell-apart people are for.

Note lots of the thread-lock compound on the screwheads and around: THIS IS BAD, DO NOT DO THIS. Thread-lock should be applied to the screw's thread, not poured onto the screwhead! Get yourself some good automotive repair manual (better from '80s, the golden era) - I strongly recommend manuals from Robert Bentley Publishers - and learn how to deal the a threadlock.

5. If you lens assy is wobbling and feels like crap, read on. Otherwise, skip to #6.
You need to remove the four center screws. Rotate the focus ring into the infinite focus position. Using the cotton-bud apply the thread-lock remover onto the screwheads. Rub the cotton-bud on each screwhead until it's clean and your screwdriver firmly seats in it. Undo the screws. Remove the lens assy - but be careful no to lose the tilt-adjustment shims:
Attachment 288224

Make a note on what opening each shim was applied to.

Put the screws into the can and pour the thread-remover so it covers the screws. Get the can closed (what a smell, ya?) and keep rubbing the cotton-bud wetted with the threadlock remover on the screw seats to remove the threadlock remains if there're any.

Check each and every helical screw and bushing. If a screw can be tightened up, remove it, have the screw's thread cleaned and de-greased, apply the threadlock to the screw's thread and re-seat the screw all the way in. If the lens assembly is still wobbling, then you've got a bad copy and the only way to have it tightened is either to replace the whole assy or to apply a small amount of grease to the roller races/tracks while rotating it clock- and anticlockwise. Be careful not to spoil the grease on the lens. Re-seat the lens assy back onto the focus ring plate (close the aperture diaphragm so aperture lever goes into the slot of the interim lever on the lens rear-end). Mind those tilt-adj shims! Use the toothstick to center the shims against each opening (or on each hole as uneducated people say).

6. If you have a proper infinity focus on your DA 21/3.2 copy and if you trust in the Pentax way of applying the thread-lock, skip this section. Otherwise, remove those three outer screws using the technique from #5 (cotton-but wetted with threadlock remover to be rubbed on the screws and the plate... well, see above). No, you don't need to remove those two screws at 7-o'clock! No, you better do not do that! Clean the screws in the threadlock remover can as per #5 above. Clean the plate from the threadlock remains. If you inf focus setting is spot-on, apply the thread-lock compound on the screw threads and screw the fasteners in firmly. YES, FIRMLY. I came across some posts saying that those three screws should not be screwed in firmly or the focus ring does not rotate - this is false. It is the base-plate which handles the focus and the focus ring must be firmly secured to it.
If your inf focus setting is incorrect, you've got to rotate the focus base-plate to have it adjusted. Yes, it is the one underneath the focus ring which the focus ring is screwed on with those three screws. You don't need to remove the focus ring, just use tweezers or T5 screwdriver thru the focus ring openings to twist the focus base-plate clock- or anticlockwise. In a case you DID remove the focus ring or in a case of curiosity what it looks underneath, here's the fragile thing which your curiosity can damage:
Attachment 288225

7. Assembly is the reverse of disassembly as they say.

8. Re-check the AF performance and complete the AF micro-adjustment if necessary.

Good luck with your 21 Limited copy!
