I'm not sure I appreciate this elitism suggestion you make and you don't know me so you shouldn't pretend to know my point of view. But you are forgiven.

At this point I'm not that concerned with continuing this, so the easiest way is to just retract my comment. Consider it done.

No, I know it happens, and that's not at all what I was saying. Far from it.

I understand what you're saying about various forms of dental. I don't think it's relevant due to this comment in the OP;

This was why I mentioned the fact that the dentist has money to survive whereas the OP cannot survive on the insurance money. Since she doesn't receive any.

However, I'm not here to debate so I'll leave it at that.

Well, possibly - it'd depend on further details, and I don't know that it's really that important to the discussion to really dissect in detail. My point was that, in general, the dentist can likely expect some amount of payment from insurance, and would then only be waiving the difference.

If that difference is 20%, it would be similar to chargin $8 per photo intead of $10. He can live on cold cuts instead of prime beef steaks. Marianne's position is somewhat different.

As I said, it's not that important, I don't think, and it sounds as though the actual issue is likely going to satisfactorily resolve itself. It wasn't intended as an attack on you, anyway, I hope you appreciate that.

The comparison to the dentists mode of payment and fee-waiving isn't particularly valid, unless photographers can also be paid via insurance.

They can't, can they?

Ah yes, good point, thanks goddo31!

I haven't really studied photography theory since high school some time, but I suppose basically you mean to emphasise whatever is the point of the shot then - correct me if I'm wrong.

I think I've thought that to myself at times, that I need to physically go to more effort in the capturing process, which is something I've noticed in others - finding perspectives you might not always encounter naturally in day to day life, that sort of thing.

I can't imagine why... :D

Thanks toot... yeah, that second probably is at least a little overexposed. The top rim light is suffering a little from that.

I was surprised by that last one - it didn't cop too much graining. I did a pinch of tidying up of graining in lightroom, but it was pretty sharp already.

Cheers for the advice.

Very tidy work Jase!

I should be filled with anger and hatred by that last photo (or the subject, rather) but I really like it a lot. The glow on the grass is very cool!

(I want exclusivity rights on tha council building, but you're doing much better with it. I was stunned to see the zoomed details in that wall - I love the shading the geometry of it creates)

I do really like this photo - the stars are a marvellous bonus!

The third one involved tinkering in Lightroom, as did the first one, to a lesser degree - the second is as shot on the scene.

Met up with a couple of the fellas from the WA Pentax Users group and wandered around the city for a little while.

I'm still on my learner plates, so each time I go out taking photos I come back and find errors, deficiencies straight away and need to go straight back out for more. Baby steps...

Photo #1 has the settings as stated above for this thread:

Photo #2 - Lens: 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL II, Camera: K-x, ISO: 200, Shutter Speed: 10s, Aperture: F8, Location: In the Supreme Court Gardens, of the Perth Council Building

Photo #3 was from up at Kings Park, killing time between work and the evening photo shooting expedition. I foolishly had ISO set to 1600 and hadn't noticed, exposure of 1.3sec, F4.

Need tips!

Spot on - a real friend wouldn't let something minor like that get in the way, or block the opportunity to sort it out. Onward and upward!

A time when there are less people may be helpful, so that they aren't getting in the way of where we want to setup tripods and that sort of thing. So long as all the cool lights are still on.

People are better photographed on beaches and in summer anyway, when temps are high and clothing requirements are low.

Both very nice. I really like that second one in particular - the city looks really nice tucked to the side there.

I wish I could wake up early enough to get a shot like this. And the lense. And the skills. And...

Yeah, that first one was a great shot. The combinations of the lights in the Bell Tower spire and on the Council Building are great. I was mesmorised by that on the night... sat there for ages getting a whole range of colour combos.

I tried doing some stitching with some of mine, but I'm new to all this fun stuff, and I tried stitching the full sized photos - it was taking forever. I've got to go back and have another crack at it (the processing), though I think I might just pop out to South Perth and get some fresh photos some time soon. Practice makes slightly less cruddy!

tootall is getting somewhat carried away with his extreme detail stitch-job! I believe the full-size version is several gigs large so far.

Hi marianne,

I'd have to agree that Peter Zack gave you great advice in case you wish to follow up with them any time.

I would think that if you want to talk things through with your dentist friend you really just need to lay the truth out on the table.

I know what it's like to sometimes get flustered when put on the spot, and it's much easier for me to write out a response to someone, since it means you get teh time to give a considered response.

Similar to when preparing for a job interview, it might be worth writing out what you'd like to explain to your friend. Then read it back and aconsider what their responses could be and how you'd respond. It might sound a little cold and calculated but it should make things easier when the moment arrives, whether it's just a time that you bump into them or one of you makes the effort to see the other one.

Same with your response when someone you know asks you to do work for them - have a pricelist on hand and a standard reply, so that you don't need to start letting emotion come into it, otherwise you'll keep thinking, "discount for this person? they ARE a dear friend".

Just a thought, do with it as you please.

Best of luck for the future anyway!

Should work fine for me too... I don't usually plan things far ahead, so should probably work alright. It's a very pleasant area up that way.

Cheers! Yeha (whoops, I meant yeah... or did I? ;)) it seems like a pretty good unit.

This is my first proper camera, so it'll take a fair bit of getting used to, though the essence of it all seems quite straighforward - it's really the artistic side of it which will take much more honing.

I'm very impressed by the quality of the sensor - I was experimenting with how dark it can take pics without the flash, and the image quality held up quite well through to 9pm, when it's quite dark. (There was a little lighting at a distance near the water-feature near a pool to the side, but fairly dim lighting)

Hi Jason. I saw those shots you posted in the Air Race thread - very cool! It was quite considerate of them to roll the planes so often to catch the fully lit up undersides so often.

I've had the idea to get down to Mount Barker, Stirling Range and the Porongurup Range since the summer holidays. On the way to visit a close friend in Denmark I saw the mountains to the east and I've been keen to get a closer look since.

So many ideas - I just hope my tiny brain can hold all of them until I get teh chance to do it. I might make a list of ideas and store tehm on the computer at home.

Thanks Blue! Yes, I am already friends with one member and met two more guys on Saturday at a meetup. It seems this place attracts good people.

I'll allow myself a little time and practice before I post photos. I just got my K-x yesterday afternoon along with the 18-55 & 50-200 DAL kit lenses, so I'll be keeping myself very busy tinkering with settings, not focussing as much on the subjects and then start fussing over that side of things more as I get more familiar with the camera.

Good times ahead!
