When I saw this camera on Ebay a little while ago I couldn't resist pulling the trigger on it, even though I don't collect film cameras (although I have still managed to accumulate a few from my lens purchases). It is a Heiland Pentax H3 in beautiful shape, but with one very interesting feature. Heiland was of course the division of Honeywell that sold the Asahi Pentax cameras in the USA. But have you ever seen not a "HEILAND"; but a "HLILAND"?:p Yes, it must have been an off day at the factory that the front prism housing got stamped thusly; a somewhat easy mistake as an L is just missing 2 bars from an E.
Has anyone seen another misspelled Heiland like this? I imagine that these parts would have been made in runs, so I would expect others to exist. In a way I'm surprised they allowed the cameras to be sold, but perhaps it was found out to late (I somehow imagine the Heiland people opening a shipment to their horror ).

That Bokeh is the result of over-corrected spherical aberration. Both the Ltd and XS versions have the same optical formula and should therefore be the same in this regard. From my experience with lenses that have some over-corrected spherical aberration (e.g., M35/2), it only occurs (or at least is noticeable) in a certain range of circumstances--for instance wide open when focusing to within 2ft and then with a background that is significantly behind the plane of focus. Based on the samples of the DA40 you link to, the range of circumstances seems pretty similar. Depending on your shooting habits, it may or may not be prevalent, but generally is not catastrophic even when it occurs as only very tight crops/very large prints will make it visible.

There once were two hairpieces in white
who started a magnificent fight
deciding that day, to their owners' dismay,
on which head they ought to alight.
"Uncle, I say," shouted the spiked toupee,
"you can have his head tonight".

Maybe that is why I always preferred the K to the M (having had both), as I generally used it for closer work. From my experience of using both, the difference in optical construction (minor though it may look) is definitely noticeable in the "look" these two lenses have (never tested them side by side for sharpness, but both were of course excellent); I much preferred the rendering of the K, which seemed to have more of that infamous and elusive 3D effect and generally better bokeh too. And I never had any complaints about the sharpness of the K.

As Class A has pointed out so well, isolated cases do not indicate a rule. Here's what lenstip (testing on Canon) had to say: 'When it comes to the accuracy of the autofocus, our assessment is very positive. The number of misses in studio conditions reached less than 4% which is a very good result. What’s interesting, most of these misses were registered at 18 mm."

Just a heads-up that DPR (which I think stands for Delayed Pentax Reviews) has finally finished their K-3 review, giving it an 83% score and their gold award. They are very positive about it on the whole (though as always they have a few niggles, particularly in video, JPEGs, and AF, and are cooler towards some features, like the AA-simulation and multi-area WB, than one might expect).

What is the approach to branding now: "Ricoh" brand versus "Pentax" brand? (a nice way of asking if "Pentax" name ultimately going to be elimitated)
Do they feel current lens mounts are sufficient (Pentax K, Q, 645)?
Marketing strategy for DSLRs (and Q)?
What companies/products do they see as their main competitors?

My advice is to shine a flashlight through the lens (first from one side then the other)--it is posible the lens has a little bit of haze in it which is causing this when hit directly by the sun but otherwise not noticeable.

It is not just the colour that has changed, but the font. In prior versions of the roadmap "PENTAX" was the Pentax logo, red in colour with its own special font. So instead of the roadmap being branded, now the "Pentax" serves as purely descriptive. Fodder perhaps for those who think Ricoh wants to eliminate the Pentax brand, but it need not be construed that way. I would point out that the font Pentax has used for their "PENTAX" logo goes back at least to the era of the Super-Takumar lenses (from the catalogues I have) and in that shade of red at least back to the K-series lenses (again from its catalog), so it could be thought due for a refresh in look.

For what it's worth (may be nothing) the new lens roadmap has Pentax at the top in black, not the usual red logo as in prior versions.

I had suggested that Pentax add SR on/off to the options for the fx button, and this went into the list of K-5 firmware suggestions that were submitted to Pentax (Japan) by PF a long while back. Hoya probably just shredded the list....

The problem here was not the water, but the chlorine (and probably urine; the Olympic champions admit that they pee in the pool) in the water. Pentax advertises resistance only to water, not to a chlorine/urine cocktail, and these chemical deposits have damaged the camera. To remove them, you need to thoroughly clean the camera with regular water. Take the lens off and run all parts of the lens under the tap (make sure to zoom and focus the lens aggressively whilst under the tap to break up any deposits!); then do the same for the camera (make sure you the mirror box is washed out well too, as deposits could be lurking there!). If the camera still doesn't work, the deposits have obviously adhered beyond the point of solubility, and you will have to shift them. To do this, use a hammer to strike all portions of the camera and lens. If somehow this fails, then you will have to buy a new hammer.

Adam, I enjoyed the review, but this statement under optics is just plain false: "but you can expect image quality to improve as the light rays have fewer lens surfaces to travel". Bearing in mind identical lens coatings, transmission will improve, but "image quality" most certainly need not. I hardly need to state a case for that (or else all our lenses would have but one element), but generally it takes more elements to better correct for abberations which diminish image quality (e.g. an achromatic doublet versus a singlet, an apochromatic triplet versus an achromatic doublet).
