I just received my refurbished K200D from Best Buy. I haven't taken any pictures or even put any batteries in it yet. It looks brand new but I noticed that the insides of the camera move when I am handling the camera. Its a definite shifting of something and wanted to know if this is normal with this camera. My ist DL has no movement when I handle it.
I have a feeling that this one is going back to Best Buy but wanted your comments.

Walmart has the K200D kit but I;m not sure it includes the newer 18-55 lens.

I should have said "newer". The K200D and K20D have caught my eye.

I just checked my picture count on my *ist DL and it is around 2200 over the past 2 years. With the new cameras being weatherproofed I am seriously considering getting a different Pentax.
The primary camera that I use I use on vacations (shooting kids etc.) is a Canon SD1100IS which is good for the job. The Pentax is my side hobby, although I dont get to it too much as evidenced by the picture count.
What camera would you guys suggest if I am to upgrade to a new Pentax given a meager $600 budget? I could sell my ist DL to help finance the new purchase.
Any input would be appreciated.

Hello,
My photography hobby has been put on hold the past year but I am starting again. Someone suggested in a thread that there were three main concepts to learn as a starting point. I can't seem to find that thread so I am asking for help.
As a guy who comes from a point and shoot background, what concepts should I learn as I venture to the manual side? What will get me up and running the quickest?
Thanks,
Todd

I ended up buying a Vivitar 285HV. I'm hoping this will help me learn more about the manual controls of the camera. Its as big as the camera.

I have an *ist DL and am learning photography. Tell me why I should, or why you did, upgrade to one of the newer models.

At max, I've been 80-90 feet away. Usually closer though.

I bought a Tamron 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di lens last week and its really hard to get rid of the shaking when I am zooming in all of the way. I am new and thought I'd ask for some advice from the seasoned pros here.
Thanks in advance.

I purchased a lens from them earlier this week and it shipped out the next day. It wasn't purchased directly from them but through Amazon's site. I think Cametta's Amazon price was cheaper than their ebay price.

Welcome. I too am completely new to photography but this seems to be a great source of knowledge. Contact me if you have any questions.
Todd
(But I'd be the last person to ask for any advice at this point. Have fun.)

I understand Kingsofronin's philosophy, but given my level of expertise (or lack thereof), this lens should suit me very well for quite some time.
I am approaching photography in such a way that I will be able to appreciate the better equipment later in my journey. I could go out and buy some expensive equipment right now, but without any knowledge that technology is wasted on me.

Thanks everyone. I think this will suit me perfectly for the time. Later, I will probably upgrade to better equipment if I find it necessary, but the photos I'll be taking and from what I've seen here, I'm sure I'll be happy.
Everyone here has been extremely helpful since I joined. I look forward to learning more from my new friends here.
Thanks,
Todd

I broke down tonight and ordered my first lens (outside of the kit) - the Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di. I feel like a kid waiting for Santa.

The camera's manual has some good info in it. Imagine that! I've been reading that today and have taken some pretty poor pictures of a black rat snack and some raccoons today. Still fun though.
I've been looking on ebay and online for a zoom lens but haven't taken the plunge yet. Is it premature for me to purchase a Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD Macro Lens from Amazon?

Thanks for all of the excellent advice. I'm headed to the library this week and just realized that I have Friday off from work. I'll head out back and experiment with the camera.
We have a beautiful wooded area behind us that is full of deer, rabbit and coyote. Maybe I'll post a few pics later on.
Thanks everyone.

Hi everyone. I am a complete beginner to photography and want to learn this hobby. I purchased a Pentax *ist DL camera kit last year so I cold take fast quality pictures of my children. I leave it on Auto at all times and am using the included 18-55 lens that came with it. I want to be able to do more than that.
Are there any specific books that will help a beginner out? Where should I start?
(I really don't have time to take any classes with my current schedule.)
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Todd
