I consider the difference in price to the very nice leather strap. I would love to have spares of that, but I don't think that's going to happen.

The K-01 stabilization was turned off on my camera on day 3 of testing.:)
Digital stabilization is not that old of a technology and it's still being refined. I'm sure in 5 years time, it will be amazing.
For home movies, I prefer the jerky unstabilized video vs the digital stabilized video. The unstabilized looks more like my old Super 8.:)

Canon has the Magic Lantern firmware hacks, which you should check out. They were created by film makers for film makers.
Does your film school specify any specific camera?
Don't forget you may be able to borrow lens from your film school buddies who shoot Canon. I suspect Pentax will be in the super minority in film class.
I wouldn't count on autofocus being used in film school. Mostly likely you'll need to pull your own focus.
I wouldn't count on autofocus being added to the firmware.
The K-3 currently only has digital stabilization, which may be supplemented with mechanical stabilization in the future, or so I hope.
If you need to shoot underwater, Canon and Nikon housing are more common. Don't know if the K-5 underwater housings will work on the K-3.
Do you need cinema lens? I'm not aware of any cinema lens made by Pentax. SamYang is suppose to release a entire line of manual cinema lenses. I'm personally interested in these since I can pull my own and they should be reasonably priced.
Good luck with your selection process.

I bought the family pack about a month ago. It included a free upgrade to Acdsee Pro 7 and Acdsee 17. I think it lets you install each of software 5 times. Anyway, it was a relative cheap way to upgrade from Acdsee Pro 6 and give everyone else tools.
As far as Acdsee Pro 7, I really can't tell much difference. The only thing I do like is having my exposure settings now on Develop screen. Before it was on the properties tab of the Manage screen. I've really wished they have added ability to use Photoshop plugins.

I find the 35mm f/2.4 an amazing lens. It's actually my go to lens for a dark venue. However, if it's very dark, then your autofocus system is going to be the limiting factor. The 50mm may be to long for an indoor shot, unless it's an large venue.
I use tricks occasionally to get the auto-focus to work. I shot a Cosmic Bowling event recently and brought glow neckless so I could put it on all paticipants. Add to the fun and allowed me to have enough contrast when it was super dark.
For me, it's a balancing act, you need to consider depth of field, ISO, shutter speed, focusing and amount of light (ambient vs flash). Full manual is the only way to go for a dark venue. A flash will also give you another level of sharpness by freezing the subject more. I also take into account how much I can raise the image in post processing. I may shoot on the darker side because I can raise the shutter speed another stop and raise the light in post.
I like primes and constant f/stop lenses. I don't think you can go wrong with the DA 35/2.4. I have a A 50/1.7 and it's also an amazing lens. Waiting for my DA 50/1.8 which should be here in a week. I'm planning on using it in larger indoor venue where the 35mm would be to short.
Shoot raw, full manual, use a flash with some light modifiers if possible, post process.

Really amazing what $800 gets you: full frame, raw full HD video out, better flash system, better auto focus, longer warranties, better support from 3rd party lens makers.

If it's the flagship, it should be the flagship. It should not have less video features than the K-01/K-30. It should have focus peaking. Did time stop for the K-5 in 2010?

prices up, prices down.
For me, i've placed all my purchases on hold until Photokina.
Due to all the chaos, I'm also re-evaluating Ricoh/Pentax to see if it's the brand for me. Don't get me wrong, I've been a long time Pentax shooter, however, when they raised prices, they also opened the door to go look at Canikon.
I'm hoping Photokina will be amazing for Pentax.

That's my big fear. If they price the new K-5 replacement at $2000, for me that's to close to a D800 ($3000) and I might as well make the jump to full frame on another brand. I'm doing my best til September, but that is a long way off. The recent price increases has also put a hold on my summer lens purchases. I'm really hoping to see something special at Photokina. Something representative and worthy of the Pentax/Ricoh partnership.
September is so far away......:(

I'd be happy with a lens and camera roadmap to take the uncertainly out of the future. And some new product announcements to reaffirm the commitment to the current Pentax owners. |

When I give cameras away, they are always Pentax point and shoot. Too poor to give a Pentax DSLR.
When someone asks me what camera I use, I show them my pictures instead of my camera. I think it's easier to convery what it can do instead of looking at specs. People around me have a higher regard for Pentax now.
