After 2,451 posts, and considering we're not breaking any new ground here, I've closed the thread.

As and when we see some movement on a new Pentax APS-C model - whatever it might look like - we can pick up our discussions once more :)

Taking a step back, it's amazing to witness the energy and rabid excitement for this camera and the brand overall. In less than 24 hours, this thread has amassed hundreds of posts, over 40,000 views, and more "likes" than the vast majority of the threads of 2015. 24 hours!!

A lot of these "likes" seem to be just people riding the high and "liking" each other's comments because "omg you're so right! this is amazing, Pentax is amazing, WE'RE AMAZING TO BE A PART OF THIS! TAKE A LIKE!"

Just wanted to say that it's really cool to see such energy around here. You know, with all the impending doom and all.

Keep it up ;)

As a backup, you can try Microsoft ICE. If you have RAW images, first convert them to TIFF, then drag them in to the application. You can also save the result in TIFF.

Zeltsman Approach to Traditional Classic Portraiture
I found this resource which for any beginner to photography will be invaluable for years to come.

Read it very carefully and at least twice, even the chapter which was written with film and a wet darkroom is relevant.

This really is a gem and nearly is lost. I would strongly suggest you copy and paste each page in word doc or whatever you use to make a permenant copy because if the web site above shuts down this book is gone for ever.

Zeltsman Apporach to Traditionla Classic Portraiture

edit, I have made a word and pdf copy which I have put in dropbox .

try this link below .to download , Please pass this old mans record of his life work on it should really not be allowed to disappear

The K-3 is THE only pro level aps-c body right now. The question is, does pentax have the pro level lenses to match? I contend they do not until they address the SDM issue. If they already have, then they need something more official than some second hand wishy washy leak.

PZ didn't have it, but with only one focus point it's not necessary, but the focus point had a frame on the matte screen.
SLR bodies with more than 3 focus points usually had illuminated focus points.

I'll say it's similar to not having illuminated speedometer on your car, where it sometimes will be hard to know the speed you're driving.

Pentax Lens Price Hike - Here we go again!

As for the "saving money by switching brands"; it just depends. Think of both Canon and Nikon as having nearly limitless systems. Systems based on having nearly every single focal length covered on numerous bases, having truly professional flash options, better close-up options, etc... Pentax got far too limiting even before the price increases. Add to that the durability and longevity of the competition. Add more maybe?? How about the Pentax target audience; which nowadays almost seems like a very mild step beyond point and shoot. Sure there are exceptions, but this is basically how Pentax views most of their sales.

But it could be worse. Imagine having a 4/3's system that does cost as much as the Olympus; a much smaller sensor at a much higher price. To make it even worse, the complete lack of a true lens system for the Olympus. All those people that own Olympus giving new meaning to Olympus has fallen

It is not just focus - the cacti sample JPEG is in Adobe RGB colour space, not sRGB, so the colours may be looking wrong for most people.

Indeed.
Even using power tools like Photoshop isn't required. An old freebie copy of PaintShopPro I sometimes use has dedicated moire correction tools under the menu: Adjust > Add/Remove Noise > Moire Pattern Removal. Fixing Adams cacti image took a matter of a second. I'm sure The Gimp and Photoshop also have filters out there that can deal with moire in an automated way too. Of course, Lightroom and DxO also have easy to use moire correction tools. Moire as a issue seems well covered by a lot of software.

K5IIs sample?

That is truly an odd thing to me. To listen to K5 detractors (and there are many), you should hardly be able to take a decent photo with the camera. Yet, I look at a thread like https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-k-5/123731-no-more-tests-just-pictures.html and I see some excellent photos that most photographers would be completely satisfied with. The K5 really is a good camera and the improvements that come with K5 II/IIs seem to cover a lot of the major issues.

Honestly, the biggest issues when it comes to Pentax and focus, appear to come more from the slow speed of the SDM lenses, which won't be rectified by a change in camera body at all.

OK, OK. The K5 is a very nice camera, I like it alot. But people got to admit this is a bit sad as pentax's latest and greatest. There is still the possibility of something even better this year, we will see soon. At the very least they should have gave it focus peaking and improved video. Looks like Pentax had some spare parts left and had to use them up. I think the K-3 will be sweet when/if it comes out.

What FF does Pentax need to keep you vs the D800?

Contrary to the sentiments expressed earlier in this thread, this is a great time to be a Pentax user. Ricoh is systematically taking the steps necessary to re-establish the brand as a serious make for serious photographers while reducing the components cost by distributing them down-market in interesting bodies like the K-01. The next 24 months are going to be a lot of fun - and a lot of people are going to be very surprised.

What FF does Pentax need to keep you vs the D800?

From Thom Hogan, Nikon guru relating to the D800 and D4:

"It's a delicate balancing act that Nikon has to go through. We're not talking mass market consumer item here, where you build huge, permanent capacity to meet insane demand (the current Apple model). A D4 is going to sell a few hundred thousand copies in its lifetime, a D800 maybe a million+. Sendai's current capacity is 5,000 D4's a month, 30,000 D800's a month. Best case scenario (assuming that the parts are actually available, which is a huge assumption considering we're talking about precision sensors here), is that they could double production by doubling staff or making everyone work double shifts."

"If we look at Nikon's factory numbers, they add up this way: D4 will likely have a total product build in the neighborhood of 120,000 units (5k * 12 months * 2 years); the D800 might manage 1.44 million units (30k * 12 months * 4 years). That's assuming they stay popular enough during their entire life cycles to keep the factory at full capacity. Compare that to the Apple iPad's 3 million units delivered in the first three days. So all those writing me saying that Nikon should just do what Apple did are a bit off in their objection: the iPad is a mass market item with a one year life cycle that sells in the tens, maybe hundreds of millions of units a year. It's worth building additional factory capacity for that kind of demand. On the other hand, Nikon professional cameras are niche products that take a long time to reach even a million units (and that's assuming they're popular and state-of-the-art through their life cycle). It's not worth building huge capacity for that because it will go unused after initial demand dissipates."

Niche product. Hogan has solid #'s based on past sales.

Pentax has about 5% of the DSLR market. So what's 5% of the D800 + D4 market? Nikon FF will max out over 5 years of both at 1.75 million units at US$3,000 and US$6,000/body. Relatively Pentax would get maybe 90,000 FF units sold over the same 5 year period. These #'s explain why Nikon charges $6,000/unit for a D4; demand is low.

Nikon makes a healthy profit at those prices and those volumes, but Pentax would need to also make a healthy profit at 5% the volume. It's very difficult to spread a similar cost over far less units sold and still have healthy margins. Ricoh would have to bleed red ink for years to make a go of it at such low volumes. A lower priced FF would make the revenue side even worse.

The Ricoh GXR A12 modules are supposedly made at 3,000 units/month, which is even more product than an FF Pentax system would move. The reason? Price. The moment a camera body gets up over $2,000/unit the demand falls off a cliff and moves into a hard-to-sustain niche. For all its weird, proprietary, lensor system, the GXR has more market appeal than a Pentax FF solely because of price.

Estimates of demand for FF products here on PF are exaggerated. Pentaxians are no more likely to spend $3,000 on a camera body than a Nikonian or Canonista. FF is a very small market. Tiny, in the big scheme of discretionary consumer spending and small relative to the total buying power of the photographic hobby community.

We may see a proof-of-concept FF at PK 2012 from Pentax, with some vague 2013 launch rumours, but more likely 2014-15. The real eyes will be on Sony to see what they do to FF to drive the cost curve down because Sony owns the dominant sensor foundry.

Seriously though, it will be interesting to see if this new one has a new sensor or does it share the K-5 sensor.

But what I would really like to see is the return of the K200D line of cameras. Forget the colours and return the weather sealing please!!

Results for the survey on spending R&D budget on lens development:

This the place to present and discuss results coming out of the survey that still runs: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/146454-wich-le...r-d-money.html and for wich these conclusions will be updated when I will hand the report out to Ricoh.

You can read my report:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/20195454/lenssurvey.pdf

A short version: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/20195454/lenssurveyfront.pdf

Most important is offcourse what would be the advice to Pentax:
What advice to give?
Wich lenses are coming out off this survey that Pentax should look into for future R&D spendings. Of course are there no questions about the top 3 in this survey.
  • There is a demand for a DA* 1.4x TC with high grade image quality and compatible with SDM support (with the option off telling the camera by firmware that SR should count in for this TC) and it should be in shops this year. It can be used for current tele lenses from the DA* series (200mm, 300mm and 60-250mm) and with new wildlife long telelens. Thinking of a fully working extension tube with contacts and SDM support would be great (for macro, micro and close-up photography).

  • There is a demand for new and improved SDM-II. It has a high priority among current user base so developing and bringing it to production and renewing current DA* lenses with SDM (16-50, 50-135, 55, 60-250, 200 and 300) should when possible be completed before PhotoKina 2012.

  • Two of the most popular lenses in this survey (DA 24mm/f2 WR and DA 135mm/f2 WR) are both new lenses to the Pentax lens line-up making the total Pentax APS-C collection more attractive to current and new users. The DA *135mm/f2.0 is just by a margin in the first group for this survey. There are different versions of these lenses possible to each different price settings (DA, DA-WR, DA* or D-FA*). I think they should be announcement at or before the next Photokina and in shops before X-mas 2012.

  • There is a demand for a long and fast portrait lens and the DA*85mm/f1.4 is favorite to this group, but some of the other options are to be considdered. Next Photokina is a good date for announcement.

  • For the DA-L lensline there is no advice coming out of this survey, but when production and sales of these lenses contribute to the brand then new lenses are to be considdered.

  • For wildlife there is a very strong reason to bring out a good and new lens (for current userbase, attraction off new users and preventing from loosing customers) but the
DFA*500mm/f5.6 is short in votes to stand out in this survey. So no advice is coming out
of this survey! Demand isn't very high in this survey, but missing in lens line-up wich gives it a high priority.

  • A long macro lens is good for the Pentax brand since Pentax has a good name in this area. The DFA*200mm/f4 macro has a market for it's own, but is short on votes in the survey. It is a lens for wich users even will buy a combo camera body with macrolens, attracting new users to the Pentax brand. In the macro section a cheap DA-L 70mm/f4 1:2 macro is a good option to considder.

  • For both Limited lens series (DA Ltd and FA Ltd) are new lenses to be considered when there is room in Pentax lens line-up (look into wide-angle or long portrait) and sales of the current lenses in this series are profitable enough. Priority is low unless one off these series is becoming the new long portrait lens and having answers to this survey is good enough for Photokina in 2014.

  • There is some demand for a budget friendly longer reaching telezoom and DA 135-400mm/f4-5.6 WR is the choice in this section.

  • In the section of Fast Lenses in the tele reach there could be a new investigation wheter there is in future a demand and a market for a high grade and thus expensive lens.

  • In the fast section for around 50mm there is some (due it is a lens not for everyone) demand for a very fast lens. This combined with yet unknown demand for a DM (Digital optimiced Manual focus only) lensl ine could made up for either looking into 50mm/f1.0 or bringing out a new batch of 50mm/f1.2 in either original or a newly designed DM package.

Ron Hendriks, The Netherlands: info@iamphotographer.nl

Offcourse thanks to everyone being involved for this survey, entering the poll, giving advice and helping to translate.

Some tips on this matter are still welcome for if I missed something or did leave a big typo in it.
