Here is an image which I took on the same night as the comet.
I am pretty impressed with the sensor of this camera - for just 30 minutes total exposure, result is pretty nice.

I normally shot astrophotos with CCD but I decided to try my K-30 on Comet LoveJoy 2014
Here is an image of it taken on January 10th.

I see that you had shake reduction off. Turning it on should allow to increase exposure and thus reduce ISO by 2-3 stops, down to 3200.
This camera is pretty good at ISO 3200

I love CHDK, so after I bought K-X, I sold Lumix FZ28 but kept Canon SD1100 thanks to CHDK.
It works really nice for things like timelapses and even HDR timelapses

This is a picture of M51 (Whirlpool Galaxy) taken with K-X.
Taken with Meade DS2090 90mm F9 refractor and ebay "CG5 type mount". Took about 40 frames of 30 sec each, processed with DSS, no darks, no flats.
After that, levels, curves and color balance with Gimp, denoise with Helicon Filter.

Falk,
Nice pictures!
Next time you should try to take multiple shots and then stack them.
The only issue is that the beach would blur if you do this.
Other option would be: take 10 camera, set them up as close as possible, and shoot at the same time and then stack the resulting pictures :-)

I personally like enfuse more.
It produces much more realistically looking images (IMO) and does not require complex process.
It is available on most platforms and is command line program.
I created some scripts in Linux and "enfused" several hundreds of images. My script also aligns bracketed images so I dont have to use tripod for taking HDR images. It works really well for me.
Just now found TuFuse, same idea as enfuse, need to try it.
