just to add more fuel to the fire... a good flash system will go a lot further than a fast lens... you say you have a lot of lighting stuff.. what kind of stuff do you have?...

like paperbag846 said... ISO is like the CPU mhz wars... prob why we are shooting a few generation old cameras (and i'm typing this on a few generations old processor computer haha)

this is fun to play with... it's only numbers... but still fun

DxOMark - Compare sensors

for some reason I expected the 1600 and up to be a LOT less noisy then the k10d... doesn't look that way... seems 1 more stop (3200) on the kx puts you just as noisy as the k10d... so I suppose 1600 would be usable.

still has me thinking on what to do (as i'm sure it does with the OP)... not easy in a market with such quick change, so many options, and so much information...

ya the higher ISO would be nice... (and I've considered it also)...

prices at adorama...
KX w/ 18-55 kit and 50-200 kit = $579 (dang good price)
$460 for just the body and 18-55 (colors only)

KR body only is $650 with the 18-55 and the 50-200 its $790

if the kit long lens would do me i'd consider the kx kit (nearly $200 might be worth dealing with NImH AA's lol)

I do wonder how long before used K5 prices drop to the used k7 prices... hmm

in that case he could sell the k10d and pick up a a used k-7 for about the same as getting the kx... (something i've thought about myself) (and the k-r is $150 more but doesn't use AA so that would be worth the extra bit over the kx imho)

again options options...

Why no love for Sigma 12-24mm?

my guess would be the $850 price tag vs the $450 for the wider 10-20... but if pentax had a FF that 12-24 would be awesome... that would be freaking 8mm eqiv on the crop sensor :)... for those that shoot film I can understand... but a medium format film camera would prob get wider for cheaper

i'm in about the same situation as you... I'm on a k10d, had it for about a year and i've found it's limits and want to upgrade... I played with some nikon and canons that I wouldn't feel like I was moving down from (aka not entry level)...

so the question is do I want to continue to invest in pentax, or sell off and buy into another system.

for some reason I keep 2nd guessing myself on the choice... either way... i LOVE how the k10d feels in my hands... but I know the newer bodies got a lot smaller :-/... but just looking at how good the new bodies stack up it makes it even more difficult decision...

anyway... may consider the sigma 17-70 2.8-4 macro... no need for the OS that it comes with but it's fast at the wide end... could use it as a fixed 4 if you wanted... it doesn't drop TO quickly so you have a little flexibility

but in the comparisons the 17-50 2.8 tamron looks awesome...

options options... :-/

some very good posts... enjoyed reading :)...

i've experimented a good bit myself and part of the fun of digital is the instant feedback... nothing near whats show but i enjoy it all the same... the ground or a solid object to sit the cam on + the 2 sec delay timer is great in a pinch...

Buying new camera: Pentax K-X or Canon T1i (help requested)

when I started looking into a DSLR not to long back I pretty much had limited myself to the nikon, canon options (read one to many fanboy pages i guess)... I told myself pentax was out because they used AA batteries... I asked on a non photography forum of mine where I trust opinions... I was basically told to goto a store and put my hands on the cameras...

I told the shop lady what about my price range was and she handed me a canon, nikon and to my dismay a pentax... I snapped up the nikon 1st... I learned SLR on my dads early 70's nikon (he was crazy IMHO to let a 5th grade kid walk around with that kit)... so instincts told me nikon... felt OK in my hands but not great... checked out the canon and I HATED it... where they put the shutter button wasn't comfortable for me :-/... then the Pentax... it just felt right to me... I hated that it felt right (remember I was still under the belief that similar level canon and nikons where superior)

went home and did some research... and found that my father-in-law had a few old M pentax lenses... and then I found the k10d... at a good ebay used price

had it for a little while now (few months maybe?) and the only thing I could wish for is a little better higher ISO performance...

so get your hands on the kx and then decide :)

Machinery HDR rusting combine

1st time playing with HDR...

went out to a camp ground this weekend... around 4pm the day prior I saw this lovely combine sitting there rusting away... I wish i'd gone back closer to sun down or gone earlier this morning... but instead i showed up around 11am... I may go back at some point to get the lighting I want... but we'll see

used my $15 used sunpack tripod ($80ish new from what i've seen), my k10d with kit lens at 18mm set to auto bracketing, an old cell phone wired headset for a trigger (the auto answer button triggers the shutter release) and Photomatrix Pro 3 for the HDR processing.

1st shot is a "proper exposure" (with matrix metering as I recall) 200 iso 1/125s shutter speed and f19, the other exposures for the HDR where 1/180s and 1/90s

the HDR image is this one

and just for fun I'll toss this one in... walking down and then back from the cabin I noticed the nice lines of shadows and knew I needed to try to get something from it...
30s exposure at f4.0 iso 100... pleased with the results... wish i'd stopped it down a little and used bulb mode for it though.

if plugs tend to be different another thing you could have is a 12v charger or power inverter to run off of car batteries... hook it to the battery or plug it into the cig lighter and away you go.

you will be dealing with 220v and an odd plug shape but i'm sure you could find a converter easily enough.

that being said... i'd roll this...
Newegg.com - Gateway LT Series LT2118u Cherry Red Intel Atom N450(1.66GHz) 10.1" WSVGA 1GB Memory 250GB HDD Netbook
$300 gets you a netbook with a 250gig HDD and a 6 cell battery so you've got a LOT of battery life... plus it's got a built in SD reader... and if you are real paranoid an external DVD burner is under $50... or on the higher side of things an external HDD... i'd get one with a dual USB plug (one for data and the 2nd for power) so you can run off the power of the computer if standard power isn't easily avl at the moment.

yes it's more cumbersome then a portable media storage device... but it will do a lot more then one

if power concerns weren't such a big deal then i'd recommend going with a standard mid sized laptop for a little more then the netbook + external DVD... biggest thing there is you give up a little size and a lot of battery life for the extra power of a true laptop.

i'm dealing with a similar situation for a trip come Jan... i'll prob end up with the netbook and toss XP on there (not a fan of the basic version of win7 personally)

good luck and have a great trip :)

I picked one up from CL not long back... got it primarly for the lenses it came with (28-90 and a 100-300)... also got an early AF minolta in the deal...

I tossed some film in it and have managed to snap 3 shots so far... the weight and feel are just wrong now that i've been spending so much time with the k10d... so small and light... also the pentamirror is hard to get used to after the prizm on the k10d... but the biggest problem i'm having is the thought of spending that much on film just to end up with some small prints that are a pain to post online if I do like em (welcome to the digital age)... . just shame you can't use M lenses with it :-/... also the button for switching between adjusting aperture vs shutter speed is a little finicky on mine and in an akward location... but would be a good starter in one of the priority modes.

I can see it as a good way moving into the SLR world... i'll keep the body in my bag when traveling just in case I have some sort of issue with the k10d.

i'll take her out soon to blow though the rest of the roll in her... but I don't see her getting much use...

nerp... got the cam and read though it and my lantern guide (came with the "kit" i got on ebay)... i carried it with me for a week or 2 to read though them and covered what I found important... when I run into something I don't understand or need help on i reference it while at home or on a computer (easier to search then the book)... then again I do a lot of my "experimenting" in the back yard :) lol...

got the photos back and they came out very nicely...

we where going with standard sized printing options and trying to use standard sized frames... one of them we did end up going a frame size up and matting it in ourselves.... customer frames are expensive and that wasn't an option...

all the same i'm pleased with the results... got to use a the local camera shop for the printing and that was nice :) i'll talk to them about doing custom size prints... i'm sure they can but it was late and I used the online system.

thanks Distudio... was just going by what I've read... experience trumps all most of the time :)

I know one thing... when I look though my k10d and then go to the pentamirrored pentax SLR i've got kicking around or the pentamirrored minolta the brightness is gone... will have to pull out the old ME super to compare to the k10d...

well that'll teach me...

a few weeks ago my wife had this great idea as a mothers day gift for a family friend of ours... We "stole" her suburban and "kidnapped" her kids took em to the park and shot em to bits (camera duh ;-) seems she doesn't have a lot of pics of her kids on the wall and my wife thought we could help with that haha.

while I wasn't 100% happy with the shots I managed to get some good ones... dealing with 3 kids under 10 made for lots of shots w/ someone off in space or blinking... (so kudos to those of you who do family portraits on a regular basis)

anyway cleaned up the pics and finally went to have them printed out, seems some of the nice framing I did with the camera was a waste... somewhere I missed that the pics taken need cropped for most larger size prints doh

so... beware... shoot loose for when you have to crop doh lol...

i'm sure she'll be pleased with the outcome come mothers day so thats another story... but figured i'd share.

pull the lens off... carefully pull down the "lever" that goes into the camera and look though the lens... you'll see the camera stop down as you do it...

the camera stays wide open (full open aperture) untill you pull the shutter... unless you hit the stop down button lever on the camera... same thing if you use the live view... it stops down for the pic, you get the effect...

for a brighter viewfinder... get a faster lens... faster lens will let in more light making it brighter

like said have a few older ones... thats one of the reasons I got the k10d... the one thing they don't have is the weather sealed lens... but you can get those now (came with the k-7) amazon they show up for about $100 used... i'm tempted to pick one up to replace the standard kit lens (it rains a lot in Panama where i plan to spend a lot of time in the next year haha)

never had it happen... reformat the card is prob the best solution...

for the rest of the computer i'd run a full scan with Malwarebytes (DL the free version)
and then DL avast at avast! - Download Free Antivirus Software or Internet Security if you are real paranoid run malware bytes in safe mode (without networking) after it's been updated then do a boot scan with avast.

yes i'm a geek and I work for a computer/internet company haha
