I've been shooting it today handheld at 1/13 and 0.5 seconds. It does VERY well handheld.

Full size available on this one if you click through - it will take a little time to load.

Sony A1 Announced

It doesn't matter if pro photographers are sponsored by manufacturers or by sport agencies. They use the best tools available for what they have to shoot. That's why you see 1Dx, D6, A9 and probably A1 also at every major sport event. These cameras are targeted to this kind of photographers. They are niche cameras, as Jason Lanier also stated in his youtube video regarding A1.

Freelance sport photographers do shoot with sports cameras also, even if in some cases they don't use the latest camera model, but a generation behind. I always look for what pros are using at every major sport event I attended over the years (Madrid Open Tour, Monte Carlo Masters, Champions League football games, etc.) and I saw only a few D850 or 5D Mark IV cameras but used as a third body.

Will enthuziastic photographers buy this A1? Sure, there will be some who would buy them. But, from what I saw in online, most of them are oriented to A7R IV, D850, R5 type of bodies rather than A1. And the reasons why these are much more appealing than A1, 1Dx or D6 are:

1. Much lower price
2. Good enough af even for some serious action

But, when you are paid to shoot sport, you won't see 2000-2500$ cameras like K1, R6, Z6, A7 III being used and this video of Michael Willson let us know why:

1. He need fps
2. He need great Af to track players
3. He need buffer and fast readout so that he can take another burst in a split of a second
4. He need connectivity to send their files fast to editors
5. He need lenses which in case of Pentax he won't have (a fast 300mm f2.8 or a 400mm f2.8)

Amators don't need that because there is no pressure in getting the shots so most of the ones with a bigger budget than the ones buying the entry level models go for the second best offer, which is what manufacturers relly on in terms os sales: D850, 5D Mark IV, R5, Z7, A7R IV. These are the popular ones because they have resolution, great af, great image quality, cheaper price than the flagships. Flagships are not designed for huge sales and big profits.

So, when you say that with 6500$ you won't buy A1 because K1 does the job for you for action, it's more than clear that you are not in Sony target with their A1 and they know that as Canon or Nikon know their target with 1Dx or D6. :) I'm not in this target either because I have what I need from the cheaper cameras. If tomorow I will be hired to shoot sport for the next 3-4 years, I would be writing this with me on the way to the store to buy a 1Dx III or A1 if I were a Sony shooter :D

In truth there are far fewer standalone camera buyers than there were three years ago, and that's not even "generally speaking". The camera market as a whole is in decline, and there are no exceptions that I know of.

Canon revenue for the quarter ending September 30, 2020 was $7.133B, a 11.78% decline year-over-year.
Canon revenue for the twelve months ending September 30, 2020 was $29.455B, a 12.66% decline year-over-year.
Canon annual revenue for 2019 was $33.058B, a 8.08% decline from 2018.
Canon annual revenue for 2018 was $35.963B, a 0.96% decline from 2017.
Canon annual revenue for 2017 was $36.312B, a 16.04% increase from 2016.

Notice the trend, and that's for one of the healthiest camera companies.

IMO the companies at the top have no choice other than to make the "old" as unattractive as possible (even if it's their own) thru promotion and marketing of the "new". Their sales are declining far too rapidly to roll out both new DSLR's and new MILC's so they've picked their sides, which may create an opening for a company or two willing to fill the gap they left behind in their quest to blunt the sales lost to Sony and steal back some of it. Going all in on mirrorless only slows their decline.

IMO every camera manufacturer is going to have to craft some way of surviving in a much tinier pool. MUCH tinier. Smaller fish may have some advantage over the big'uns who simply can't survive without more to eat.

Just my .02 cents.

To me the A1 seems very impressive. I have absolutely zero interest in a camera like that but to me it looks like features a sports photographer would love. As mentioned niche gear like this have been expensive for a long time. This doesn't seem out of line as you always pay a lot for the small improvements at the very top end. Playing down the achievement makes no sense to me and looks like lack of understanding or some strange brand rivalry. Sony's recent prime lenses seem exceptional as well so they are doing good stuff. Personally I will never buy Sony after their various cripple, rootkit ,anti-consumer behaviour going back decades.

These are incredible specs. Good on Sony for continuing to push boundaries. This Canon/Sony mirrorless battle is good news for people who can benefit from the tech and have the $$ to pay for it. The A9 was already an astonishingly good camera, but to boost the resolution and FPS, while adding 8k and all the other additions will make this an attractive body for those who can use it. It makes more more curious to see what features and updates will find their way downstream into the A7iv.

Ahem! :)
  1. Family-controlled vertical monopolies, zaibatsu were dismantled by the US occupation forces (but, as part of the Reverse Course, soon succeeded by keiretsu in an effort to re-industrialize Japan as a bulwark against communism in Asia).
    -

  2. Together with Fujifilm, Olympus and... Japan Industrial Partners (JIP), Sony are part of the Sumitomo Mitsui keiretsu.

This explains why Sony came to Olympus's rescue in 2012 and why JIP were chosen to relieve:
  • Olympus from their mobile phone sales agency ITX in 2012

  • Sony from their Vaio business in 2014

  • Olympus from their imaging business in 2020.

John, you have set a really high bar here. This is gorgeous stuff you are posting.
I hopefully have a portrait shoot set up for later this week with the granddaughter. If my daughter is willing to let me post here, I will.
I haven't done an honest to gawd portrait session for years. It should be fun.

I suspect a lot of Canon mirrorless sales are from existing Canon users either adding or switching to the mirrorless platform. Also, there's a portion of the photography community that simply has a downer on Sony (often for similarly silly and/or baseless reasons and prejudices to those who discount Pentax), so an offering from the biggest "real" camera company in the world is bound to be attractive. Lastly, there's the "shiny new thing" aspect... Whilst Sony continues to release new (usually excellent) cameras, the DNA is quite old - or it can look and feel that way, at least. Canon's mirrorless offerings are still very new, and exciting to some for that very reason. I think that's especially true where glass is concerned. Sony's lens catalogue is mature in breadth and age... Canon's mirrorless lenses are the latest "thing"; though it's fair to say the excitement isn't without substance. They have some interesting glass...

The Daily Camera News 'report' is totally speculative.

A translation of the relevant part of Kimio Tanaka's tweet:

was provided before:

'Currently the successor to K-3 II is making progress, it seems to be progressing smoothly, I'm excited and thrilled.'

Nowhere speaks Kimio Tanaka of September 2020 or even Q3 2020.

K-1 viewfinder magnification: 0.7x.

0.7 x 1.5 (APS-C factor) = 1.05

By the way, the viewfinders in Nikon D500 and Canon EOS 7D Mark II have a 1x magnification (K-3, K-3 II and KP: 0.95x).

Err... no. :) Zeiss Otus, Milvus and Classic are SLR lenses. Zeiss ZM are Leica M lenses.

Cosina definitely make E-mount lenses for themselves, using the Voigtländer brand in the framework of a brand licence agreement with Voigtländer GmbH, a subsidiary of the German United Imaging Group GmbH & Co. KG.

As much as I love my M4/3. If my goal was just to adapt legacy manual glass on the cheap, I'd buy a used original A7 FF.
Legacy glass doesn't shine very well in my experience on the smaller, more pixel dense M4/3. You'll get much more out of those lenses adapting them to a FF. And you can find original A7's cheaper than dirt on ebay.
