Hey Gang,
I was volunteering at my local animal shelter, taking pictures of the new critters needing to be posted on Petfinder and was having issues with my lens not focusing on the right spot.
I am using a 50mm 1.4 AF lens and I have the focus set to the center in the camera.
I was shooting away, checking sharpness quickly on my LCD and all looked fine. But when I loaded the pics on my computer to edit I was very disappointed. I've attached a couple of images to show what I am talking about...
Forgive my ignorance as I primarily shoot with an old Hasselblad 500c/m and Pentax k1000. Film and film cameras I understand. The world of DSLR's is still new to me. I'm not used to all the technology involved...
So, is there a setting within the camera I am missing? Is that what they call "back focusing"? Do I need to calibrate the lens? If so, how is this done? I'd like to get this resolved sooner than later as I plan to visit the shelter once a week to help out with web listings and such.
Thanks in advance for the help.

First, thanks to all of you who helped me clear up the lens lingo in my Pentax vs Tamron thread.
Now, these are the two lenses I want:
Pentax 100MM-Macro-f2.8-AF D-FA lens
Pentax 50mm f2.8 Macro AF D-FA lens
Being that I have the 18-55mm kit lens that came with my K-x...which of these two lenses should I buy first? I can't afford to buy both at the moment.
I am leaning towards the 100....

I am looking for the "quality" of these lenses. The DOF and overall drama (for lack of a better word) that these focal lengths provide.
I want to accumulate lenses now while I am building a portfolio and then...when I can afford it, upgrade to a professional level DSLR Pentax body.
Am I on the right track with that thinking?

I just purchased a k-x as I am new to dslr (have a hassleblad, rollieflex and various other film cameras and been shooting for years) and am trying to learn the Pentax lens lingo.
I understand that I need a "k" mount lens but much beyond that the various abbreviations throw me.
I primarily shoot still/macro and portraits. I prefer prime vs zooms and want a fast 50mm and 85 or 100mm.
So my question is...is pentax glass better (read: worth the $) than tamron?
I realize I may be starting an all out debate with this question...

Thanks for the warm welcome...this is the first time I have posted in the "welcome" section of a forum and had people reply. That's a true sign of the solid community here.

Hi All,
My name is Jess and I am an aspiring professional maternity/newborn/child photographer in upstate NY.
I have two kids, 4 and infant, that for now are my inspiration and portfolio builders.
I did a ton of research before "going digital" and liked what Pentax had to offer.
I started small with the K-x figuring if nothing else it will be my kick around camera later on. I had no business getting a "pro" model just yet.
For now I want to play and get some good glass so that when I am ready to buy a better body I am good to go.
I look forward to hanging out here and getting to know some of you.
