FYI since this is a global contest it is winter in the southern hemisphere. So factor that in to your nominations.
Also you guys are being easy with animals and nature, sheesh, why not just make it insect macros and be done. :)
I nominate the theme of support.

Thanks for the quick reply, it definitely said Honeywell pentax, I am fairly certain it was a 1.2, I'll need to verify and look it over more throughly. Looks like a stop is in order after work tomorrow.

I found an H3V in perfect condition with an (assumed Cosina) 55 1.2 lens for $165 at a local antiques shop.
Need to go back to check the lens again but the body looked almost NiB.
What do you think?

me too!
awo425: unfortunately this store didin't have the %d2 in stock. Thinking back I realize that the D700 really did fit my hand well. I am 6'4' and need to curly mypinky underneath the K10D. I will definitely need to get some more time with one before making the plunge though.
Luckily Atlanta has a group that meets twice a month to shoot models and a bunch of course they are mostly Canon and Nikon users so I should be able to test both systems out with some good glass next Tuesday.

I've also edited my original picture for one with a color profile attached and a bit lighter than before.

After much research I had apparently imported the photo into Photoshop for Noise Ninja and 'saved for web' which had the embed color profiles option turned off. I also switched from my monitor specific ICC profile to sRGB 2.1 which seemed to help with consistency.
I've also found out that Firefox 3.5 does not have Color Profile support on by default. you have to install this AddOn to do so.
Here is more info.
Also: IE7,8 don't have Color profile support at all. Safari has it built in.
Basically if you look at this image and the morotcycle is green you are seeing the color profile attached to the image, if it's blue then any color profile embedded is being ignored and if it's red you're probably running vista. |

Same here, I've been unhappy with the focusing on my K10D and have been thinking of the K7 if I stay at APS-C and a D700 if FF, went and checked one out it was quite a bit heavier thatn the K10d but the focus was wicked fast and silent. I dont think the VF was any brighter, didnt have them side-by-side to verify. Hand held the snapshots were in focus where for me on the k10d they would have most likely been oof.
The LCD was nice and exposure looked good. Tried it with the 85 1.8 they had.
Definitely some things to think about.
I haven't tried the Canon 5D2 yet, I like the look of the D700 better but the large dial on the back of the 5D2 looks worthwhile. Image quality is probably a wash between the two. If the Canon is lighter I'd proabably go that route so I can use my Pentax lenses.
Also I think the D700 may be a bit more intimidating if it was pointed at you.

What about flashlights, candles, a cars headlamps, make up some reflectors with alu. foil or use some laminate?
You can use some colored, trnasluscent paper sheet protectors for gels.

You may be right about it being dark I have my system at home set up for 1.8 gamma but I am viewing this now on a 2.2 gamma machine at my workplace.
Although 'essential' for this photo could be debated as it doesnt really matter for the foreground and I did intentionally darken it for that reason but it may be too dark.
I'll have to recalibrate at home.

"In the fields of observation chance favors only the prepared mind." - Louis Pasteur
Basically. On most days the flash, flash batteries, extra batteries and the film holders aren't with me. I also get away with only one lens and subtract the cleaning kit. This was just a worst case about town, which still isn't too bad.

This is patently rediculous, you may as well say we can't communicate with other people because the other person may be 'discomfited' by the conversation. Walking up to a person is 'intruding' upon them.
I am fat and that may be 'discomfitting' to some do I have to ask if it's ok to be in the same park? If I am on a plane I may 'intrude' on someone else do I need to ask everyone on the plane if it's ok that I fly with them just to make sure someones feelings aren't hurt.
A person does not have a 'right' to not be 'discomfitted' by the so called perceived intentions of a photographer. Where does this line of thinking end, do I need to ask if I can draw a stranger? What about writing about a stranger I saw? How about remembering a stranger in my memories?
In this world we are all here together and where one's mere presence can discomfit and intrude upon another person it is ludicrous to assume that I should have to ask for anyones permission to do something that doesn't involve them directly, physically.
I am capturing history with my camera I am not capturing their soul. I am imprisoning my memory on film I am not imprisoning them.

This is a Tom Bihn, Imago . While not made for cameras it works for me while around town. This shows what I carry at MAX capacity. Remove the flash and its batteries, one lens and its not quite as preganant.
It has a pocket in the back I use for magazine or sketchbook (not shown). I've been looking for appropriate dividers for the interior but extra plush microfiber towels for cleaning (and you should always have your towel anyway) help with cushioning. it has 2 large pockets on the inside which I use for a lens on one side and miscellaneous bits, batteries, card reader etc in the other.
I also have a Tom Bihn Super Ego messenger bag which is more for carry on, travel etc as it's quite a bit larger. It has taped seems and is extra large and I've found I can just drop this bag and it's contents inside the Superego and still have room to spare. |

This thread was just what I needed. WAY too many choices out there for me to narrow it down and as soon as funds come in for accesories then I'll get the FL_Gulfer special.
Feisol CT-3441T Tripod & the PC-33NS and one of the monopods for more mobile use.

Bump because I think we can colsolidate DIY beauty dish designs.
I'm not sure I shared this here but it's a different design.
Mine does use a convex mirror but it is a mounted further from the flash to allow the light to spread and to change the distance from the flash. I think I'm using a much more rounded dish. Also the stand is a bit 'rickety' and could use some design tweaks.
f5.6 Iso100, 35mm, 1/6s
and the model shots...
My brother, very happy to be photographed :p

Hey nice to see another Atlantan on here! I've yet to make it to Road Atlanta, I'm part of the local Audi group and they were just at the track for the Petit LeMans.
Nice shots, can't be a Pentax. :p

So I was looking for something to do and found a group that was gathering on Sunday to do a mushroom hunt in a local atlanta park. Sorry I can't tell you what these mushrooms I can only point out the common grocery store varieties and the group was about 20 strong so I kinda did my own thing. Next time I'll remember to be more the photo journalist and notate what these are.
1. This is part of the group one of the 'experts' is in the tye dye. The other 2 are looking at a mushroom growing from the top of the stump.

TBH if it was made in Vietnam and they are still charging the same amount of money I would probably think twice. I would pay a premium for 'made in germany' or 'made in japan' rather than china or vietnam. Why this is I'm not sure but may be down to economic prejudice.
Disclosure: I own a 31mm and 77mm and don't care or know where they were made. They are pure magic.

you could also print it out yourself on a home printer just to see what it looks like in real life. stick it to your wall and see how it really looks outside of a computer screen.
