? Telephoto Recommendations for K-X

Agree.
Maybe we are talking past each other.
I am looking for a lens that is physically longer than 300mm.

That said- some things might integrate more gracefully than others.
The DA lenses were redone with plastic mounts to serve as the DA L kit lenses for the K-X. They are lighter than the DA lenses, and presumably fit the price point better.

I am open to the idea that since the K-X is an entry level model, with lighter weight kit lenses, it might possible to find something that will fit the mount that the K-X was not intended to handle.

If there is an issue, I'd rather hear about it first, rather than re-validate something someone else already knew was a bad idea.

(Guessing the K-7 is a lot heftier for a good reason.)

Sorry- "shorter" as in shorter focal lengths (135mm, 200mm etc) than I already have covered via the kit zoom lenses.

Marc,
Thanks. I see your point.
I'm happy to be anyplace that gets input from the right people.
I'm getting help, and appreciate it.
Camera - Lens, Chicken-Egg: I thought it was a camera-format / body question.
I am looking for a longer lens, but one appropriate to the K-X - a relatively petite camera body.

The existing threads I've found all seem to revert to discussion of the shorter lenses.

RE "misconception" it is a well-documented one.
This from a post by Administrator Ole
"The (DA / DA L) 55-300 alone has an 24x36mm format equivalent of 82 - 450mm"

I have read similar things each time the subject of full frame lens on APS-C comes up.

Thanks for the recommendations.

My Question:
What do the other Pentaxians do when they want a longer telephoto?
(400mm range and higher)

I'm a recent K-X owner-
Reason #1 Price Point & Practicality.
Reason #2 Nostalgia - I have my Dad's Spotmatic F.
I like the K-X a lot, and got it with the 55-300 kit lens.

I realize the 300mm zoom I have now is effectively a 450mm in full frame formats.
Have now discovered the obvious attraction of faster & longer telephotos.

I have been cautioned away from the 500mm f8 mirror lenses because they are generally unsatisfying most of the time for most users.

Stuff like the ma$$ive Pentax-FA 600mm F4 is simply out of my league
(I initially bought the K-X because it was $250 less than my next choice.)

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
Blue Jay

P.S. Yes, I had an excellent (100% success) CMOS sensor-cleaning session with a "rocket-type" bulb blower. Thanks for asking.

P.P.S. I tried the search engine, looking for an earlier answer to similar questions, and, finding none, posted this one.

Happy Camper checking in.

Returned the K-X with the black spot on the screen.
(Full refund.
-Three cheers for Amazon.com!)

Purchased K-X number two.
Arrived today.
Thanks to the Pentaxian Responders in this earlier thread, I now knew how to stop it down (f32 was all I could coax out of it) and look for snakes in the grass.
Nuthin' when compared to last time.

Okay, okay - One VERY small dot, upper left is all I could see, and that was really working to find it. Just not a factor.

FWIW- Went to "How to clean a sensor" school on line.
I'm on my own to keep it clean. But it arrived in excellent shape!

Thanks again.

Over the years, I've had four film slrs, a couple pocket film range finders, three digital pocket point and shoots. (Modest by most any enthusiast standard)

My wife's Nikon D40 dslr has been very well-behaved, so I was taken unawares.

Relieved to know nothing significant is wrong.

Very much appreciate knowing what to expect from the K-X.

Thanks for shaping my expectations.

Black Spot Problem - NEW K-X

It is new and just out of the original packaging.

The K-X "dust detector" feature registers zero dust.
- I am lead to believe it is there to show me where to clean.
- It says there is nothing there to clean.

The K-X "sensor dust shaker" produces no change.

Yet among the early responders, there seems to be concensus that this visual effect can only be "dust".

Has anyone else had to correct something like this in a new K-X ?

Second try to share images has failed.
Sorry.

Bottom Line-
"Dust" scan comes up clean.
(A new camera should not have a dirt problem in the first place.)

Pixel repair function cycle has been used, produces no visible change.

At f40 the "spot" is denser, with more defnition that at f7.

A large part of communicating this experience has been to poll users to establish how common this is. (Apparently it is not common.)

Secondarily- to provide one data point in case there are others who experience this.

I have general confidence in Pentax's quality control, so I do not expect a 50/50 chance of a repeat experience.

Cameras should not produce images of black dots that are not there in front of the lens.

This one, for what ever reason, does, and it does it very consistently.

The spot is not moving at all in response to the CMOS sensor shake cycles.

The "Dust Alert" detection cycle on p 286 does not reveal anything.

Since it is doing this new, out of the box, I'm dis-inclined to tinker & fidget with it.

I am convinced it is some kind of pre-existing issue.

Will do.
Meanwhile, you can easily duplcate what I'm seeing by putting a black ballpoint pen dot high center on a 3 x 5 index card.

My newly delivered K-X out of the box has a "black spot" in the display and recorded in the images. I am convinced it is a Quality Control issue.

New toy, clean freak, washed hands, surgical prep on the kitchen table when I opened the box.

Sun came out on this Saturday morning.
Stepped outside and took first pictures blue sky.

I have a conspicuous tiny black spot on the camera monitor display image.
I have the same tiny black spot on recorded images in exactly the same location.
It is in every image from the very start. Took clean uniform background to reveal it.

"Spot" does not display in viewfinder.
Swapped lenses.
Same black dot, same location.

Being an optimist, I did the page 285 cleaning the CMOS sensor procedure.
(Not that I believed for a minute there was a chance of having introduced something into a new camera since I'd been playing "cleanroom" in the first place.)

No result, or you'd not be reading this now.

Same black spot.

"Plan A" is to box it up and return it.

Figure it was worth sharing in case there was something I've missed.

Thanks in advance.

Somebody actually once made a word out of the letter sequence.
"K L M N O P"

KELEMENOPY/kɛlɛmɛnˈəʊpɪ/
A sequential straight line through the middle of everything, leading nowhere.

Leading nowhere.

So whoever pointed out we should/could be out taking taking photos, they are very right.

(Did the Pentax marketeers put out a promo video for the K-X, or did I imagine that? That should have settled this right off...)

So long as we avoid ever speaking to another human being, it will never matter.

It took a while for 2010 to standardize and settle down as "Twenty Ten".

A seasoned mentor who worked a brilliant career spanning Time-Life, Nat'l Geo, and Smithsonian always clearly articulated "Knee-con". Only hearing Paul Simon's "Kodachrome" on the radio protected me from bowing to expert practice and doing likewise.

To the "Dashites" out there-
Wonderful!
You've illustrated my reason for asking in the first place.

Thank you all for your thoughtful inputs.

It's a damn poor mind that can think of only one way to spell a word. ~Andrew Jackson

Is there any standardization for how K-X is pronounced?
i.e. "starist" was a surprise.

Is everyone's K-X Live View picky & quirky about focusing?

The manual comments seem to be trying to manage user expectations.
How can I tell when something is really amiss?

When in Live View mode, the camera seems as though it never really settles down to focus on anything. Out - in - back out etc.
