PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
K10d w/grip, SMC-A 50mm f2.0, flash, and more ....

Asking Price
$375

Item Location
Indiana

Item Description
I have an exceptionally nice K10D with the battery grip, a Pentax SMC-A 50mm f2.0 lens, and a Promaster dedicated flash for sale, with all manuals and all hardware as supplied when new. Also included is a SanDisk 16gb Ultra SD card. Camera has the latest firmware (v1.31) already installed. The last pictures I took with it was approximately 1475.

I was given this camera by the original owner, but since I am already invested in Canon gear, I'm going to let this go and apply the funds to a Canon digital camera. I purchased the Pentax grip myself, new, and have only had it a few weeks.

There are three batteries: one in the camera, one in the grip, and one spare.

Asking $375 clear to me, will ship for free to locations in the US, others are welcome to purchase, but will have to pay actual shipping costs and insurance to their location.

Camera front:

Camera back:

Camera is in excellent shape. LCD screens are clear and bright, no significant scratches on screens, top or bottom. There is one tiny scuff on the front of the grip near the strap lug:

The lens is clean and clear as well, both caps are included, as well as extras. Anyone purchasing this kit needs to understand the issues and operation when using older manual focus lenses with the K10d.

The Promaster flash is dedicated Pentax. I never used it, but it does power up and fire as it should.

All cords, charger, USB cable, extra caps, case for the SD card are included, along with all manuals. This is a complete kit, everything you need to start shooting right away.

I really think this is a fine body, and a solid camera, but it just doesn't make sense for me to make the switch, so I hope someone else will put this camera to good use. Thanks for looking.

I may have to concede that one. A Google shopping search turned up $499.95 as the lowest price, but I see now that some sellers on eBay claim to be selling it new for $399.

Though IMHO, even $400 for a slow fixed lens that *should* be as common as grass is a bit pricey. Other manufacturers are making similar lenses two stops faster for considerably less.

On a less-than-serious note, I find myself wondering how anyone can use those "pancake" lenses anyway. Part of my grip of the camera, even when using AF, is the underside of the lens. What do people hang on to when using one of those?

Continued thanks for the cogent replies. I'm glad this thread hasn't turned into a P vs C flame-fest, because the result has been some good comparisons on the relative merits of each system looking at it from where I stand now.

I wish the decision was getting easier, though.

Pentax does not make this easy. I handle the K10 and find it to be a competent camera. Then I ponder the fact that I can't put a simple standard prime on it for less than $500, and it makes me cringe. It's not *all* about fast tele primes.

Thanks for all the responses, folks. I appreciate the feedback. I still haven't made any final decision, so any further thoughts on the matter are welcomed. I did want to address a couple of points, FWIW.

Actually, all other things considered equal, I consider a FF lens to be more valuable because it's more versatile. Even though I'm trying to go digital, I don't imagine I'll ever stop shooting film entirely. Buying FF lenses preserves that. If I get a Canon digital, I keep my old EOS-1 film for days when I feel like a slide or some black and white. By the same token, if I were to go to Pentax, I would gladly pick up a bargain-priced Pentax film body and keep it handy. That has a big influence when I consider Pentax DA vs Pentax FA vs Canon.

I'm getting the feeling that you think I'm slamming or picking on Pentax ... I'm not. Nor am I looking to rehash an extended debate that's already happened a thousand times. I'm just trying to make the right decision while considering a nearly overwhelming number of variables.

Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be just one rare fluke. After my lens fell apart, all I did was search this very forum for "FA 50 fell apart" and I had a thread with five prior failures identical to mine, making me the sixth. There may well be other references on this forum, and there are certainly references on other forums as well. Once again, I'm not bashing Pentax because of one lens, I'm bashing *one lens* because of one lens. One lemon out of an entire line may not be bad, but this lens does seem to have a fatal design or manufacturing flaw, and I'm not being irrational by saying I'd prefer not to gamble another $300 and just hope for the best, when there are plenty of examples to cite. How many instances of an identical failure are required before deciding to pass on a particular model can be considered rational?

Honestly, I have no evidence that the lens was anything other than "as advertised" when I bought it, and it looked flawless upon inspection. I really don't suspect any foul play. Maybe the lens took a rough hit during shipping. Maybe it was on the verge of failure, and had the original owner taken it out one more time it would have failed on them.

It really doesn't matter now. I've written it off and am moving forward. All I know is that I won't buy another copy of that specific lens model.

While it's undoubtedly an outstanding lens, the DA 55 *starts* at $650. That's way too much for a single-purpose lens. If I was going to spend that kind of money, I'd buy the 50-135 2.8. I'm very interested in that lens, but I'm trying do decide if the failure reports of the motors in the SDM lenses are exaggerated or not.

Regarding the 50 1.4, I considered a repair, and even contacted Eric about it. But after reading more on the failure, and how others dealt with it, I noticed that the AF contact brushes are bent, and that part is not available. (Even though the lens is still being sold new.) Buying a lens for parts, and *then* paying for the repair seems like throwing good money after bad.

Unfortunately, I'm spooked on the FA lenses in that form factor now. I was seriously looking at one of the FA 35 2.0s the other day, and all I could picture was it sitting in two pieces after the first day in the field. Unfair, perhaps, but after having a virtually mint lens self-destruct in my hands, I'm a little skittish.

Actually, what I want to do and how I shoot is already pretty solidly defined. That's part of what's making this so difficult.

I shoot lots of high shutter speed telephoto work at low ASA. Which means relatively fast primes, or a fast constant-aperture zoom.

All my life, I was heavily invested in Canon film gear. Starting in the early 1980s, I'd worked my way up from AE-1s, through F-1s and T-90s, and by the end I had an EOS-1n, EOS-1v, and a bag full of L series glass. One trip to the hospital in 20004 took care of all that, though. For what seemed like an eternity, I didn't even own a camera. Well, a couple of years ago I bought a "lowly" EOS-1 and an EF 50 1.4, and got back in the game. All I shoot is Provia 100F, and occasionally a few rolls of Efke 50 or 100.

I knew that digital was the way to go, though, and I always figured I'd eventually end up with one of the entry-level EOS-1D cameras. That way, any investment I made in EF glass would carry over.

Well, fast forward to this spring. A friend of mine who often ribbed me about still shooting film passed away and left me his K10D and a Pentax 18-250 zoom. At that point, ditching my modest investment in EOS gear and sticking with Pentax seemed like a no-brainer.

That was, until I started looking over the very confusing Pentax lens line. It took me forever just to figure out that there are sometimes three or even four versions of the same lens. Then I started noticing what the "Pentax Tax" ... which is to say that all the lenses I really consider useful are either "new and limited" or "old and rare". Take the 200 2.8, for example. The new version, which isn't even full-frame, costs $900 or more. Well, the FA version is years old and *starts* around $900 but gets up over $1000 real fast. It seems like that's the story for nearly all Pentax lenses. In some cases, you can't even consider the older A, M, or K lenses, because they cost even more! Even buying a simple 50mm lens was frustrating.

But anyway, back to the story... I knew very quickly that the Pentax 18-250 wasn't doing it for me. It was too slow and the variable aperture was an issue. I also felt like it wasn't really showing me the full capability of the K10D body. So I sold it, and a few days later bought a FA 50 1.4, which I considered to be a solid, benchmark lens. Well, on the first trip out of the house, it fell apart in my hands. No parts, even though it's still being sold new ... so no repair. Basically, half the equity in my Pentax gear went up in smoke.

Well, now the puzzle is even more confusing, and further complicated by the fact that I can't really invest in one system without liquidating the other. Do I unload the K10 and try to trade it in on an EOS-1D? Do I unload the EOS-1 and buy Pentax lenses, even though I'd be pretty much stuck buying older M or A lenses and hoping to upgrade later? Is it worth keeping a $300 body, even though I pay that much or more for a Pentax lens when compared to something equal from Canon? (For example, the aforementioned 200 2.8 can be had for around $500.)

It seems like there are a million options, and no clear winner. I love the feel of the EOS-1s and am so familiar with them I can operate them in my sleep. Digital is the future, though, and the K10 seems like a very good camera. And I have no doubt that Pentax's primes are optically excellent ... but good lord, the prices!!

Argh. No wonder I have a headache.

I apologize for the length, but this has really been frustrating me lately, and I don't have anyone I know personally who I can talk this over with. So anyone who's read this far has my thanks, and I could really use some sensible advice.

Actually, I've been desperately wanting to discuss exactly that, and how it relates to Pentax lenses, for some time now.

But I'm going to quote your message into another thread. Look for it in a few minutes.

As a person with a K10D and no lenses to speak of, I can tell you that there's little point in trying to by Pentax *anything* on eBay. I've been trying to figure out what to put on this camera for weeks, and all I've got is a headache.

It seems like every prime lens listed is either "new and limited" or "old and rare". If you can't afford the new stuff, you can't afford the old stuff, either. It's insanely frustrating.

I really, really like this K10D body, but trying to figure out this convoluted lens lineup and avoid the "Pentax Tax" is putting me off the camera a lot.

I just sent an email to Eric. We'll see how it goes.

Where do I draw the line on repairing a $265 lens that I can't afford to replace? :(

Well, add me to the list. Took my FA 50mm out for it's first trip last night, and *exactly* the same thing happened. *Exactly*. Went to focus near infinty, heard a loud CLUNK ... then when I pointed it at my feet to focus on something closer, the whole front of the lens fell out exactly as the pictures above. It was a miracle that I managed to catch it.

It sounds like a crock that no parts are available for a lens that's still sold new.

I don't know if it's worth dropping another $100+ on it or not. :hmm:

Anybody want to buy a gorgeous K10D?

As a person who ended up with a Pentax camera unexpectedly, I've been struggling with the best way to proceed (invest or trade) for weeks now.

I had thought this thread might provide some good insights, but the sarcasm is just off the scale. I had expected better from this place.

Forgive my ingorance, but what does the "AL" stand for? This is the only Pentax lens I've noticed with that designation. I assume it has something to do with why this lens is so expensive (even for a Pentax lens).
