Pentax K100D Flash Failure

Hi !

I was taking quite a few pictures using the built in flash on my K100D yesterday when the flash simply stopped working. Afterwards when trying some test shots to get it going I heard something go POP !

I'm assuming theres a physical fault and it needs repair (unless anyone has any ideas) but is it going to be worth the cost of a repair or realistically should I be looking for a new camera body ?

Regards,

Kevin

Many thanks for that Vincent that was very helpful, I can save money with no loss of speed then :-) Do you happen to know what the difference between the Sandisk Extreme and Extreme III , and also the ultra range is, is just a speed thing again which with the K100D I can safely ignore ?

It's difficult to decinde on what SDHC card size and what brand to choose. But I think I am going along the route of several smaller (4 or 8 GB) card rather than one large. Partly this is influenced by having a 32GB SD fail yesterday, fortunately with only just a few test shots on it !

But what brand should I go for..... Sandisk seems to be well thought of so I am seriously considering these, I have seen the Sandisk Extreme that are Class 6 or Class 10, I don't know in detail what Class 6 or 10 means apart from I think a 10 is supposed to be faster is that correct ? Also There is a choice of Sandisk Extreme and Sandisk Extreme III, can anyone tell me what the difference is ?

I will use them in a K100D, does it make any difference whether I have a Class 6 or 10 and if I have an Extreme or Extreme III ? With certain cameras does it get to a point where getting faster memory makes no difference ?

Frosty

Yes I did but I got rid of it a while ago during my "prosumer" era when I was having an eBay clearout ! :-( Still have the P30n however with a 28-80mm Tamron lens, would that work on the K100D albeit manually ? Is the basic mount still the same nowadays ?

Thanks, so using the AF280T am I right in thinking there is no specific integration in how it works with the K100D, would I use the camera in manual mide to set the apeture and let the flash control the exposure ?

Thanks for that, but from a quick search it looks like the price isn't that much different from the Pentax AF360/540.......

Flash for K100D

I am happy to be back in the world of SLR, after my P30n many years ago I spent some years with compact and prosumer digitals, but of course compared to a P30n the facilities on a K100D are quite involved and I find choosing the flash unit a bit complicated and I'm not sure if some of the terminology is new since the 35mm days or if I've just forgotten.

I understand that the AF360 and AF540 work fully dedicated with the K100D and that almost any flash can be used in fully manual mode. But many I see say they will work to some extent but not in TTL mode, the AF integration may or may not work etc.

But the compatibility is all to do with features I didn't have in the film days. In short, as I'm almost out of budget, can anyone recommend any affordable flash units that will work well with the K100D that doesn't cost so much as the the Af360 or AF540 and if so what impact any lack of integration will have ?

Or really do I just need to resign myself to the need to save up and get an AF540 ?

I have just got hold of a Pentax K100D, I have checked it's firmware verion which is ver 1.00.

I have found the updte instructions on the Pentax site but I cannot find anywhere to actually download frmware file which I understand is called kc_v102w.exe

Can anyone advise where I can download this ?

Also, if the camera is currently ver 1.00 is it sufficient to apply the ver 1.02 update directly on top of ver 1.00 or should I apply the ver 1.01 update first and then the ver 1.02 ?

Hi !

Can anyone tell me what the maximum memory card size is for the K100D ? (Both originally as an SD and as a SDHC if the firmware is updated to v 1.02)
