Tested the lens again. This time not over the car hood. That appears to have been the problem. The lens is actually pretty decent for the price I paid. Thanks everyone for your input.

Actually everyone’s suggestion that it is a result of heatwave makes a lot of sense now. I was waiting in a drive thru at a bank and I snapped a few quick shots straight through the windshield. I bet the “heatwave” was coming from the hood of the car. I’ll have to go back out there and try again...this time not shooting over the car. If this turns out to be the case, I will be very pleased that it’s not a defective lens.

Never thought of that. The temp was only around 78 deg., however. I’ve taken many images with other lenses in 100+ deg. here in the desert and have never had this issue. I’ll keep playing with the lens. The aperature value didn’t seem to help either. Thanks for your reply.

Greetings. I recently purchased a Sigma 28-105 3.8-5.8 UC-III. I have very bad image distortion at the long end. Straight edges come out jaggy. Anyone have any ideas why this is? I’ve never experienced this in a lens.

Thanks for your response. I assumed that the K3 would be the best regarding continuous autofocus and low light focusing too. But it is out of my budget at the moment.

I am tired of having to tell the kids “hold on, don’t move” while I try to lock focus. It takes away from the spontaneity. It would be great to be able to just shoot away. And I was wondering if the D7000 would allow me to do that. And I’m not even talking about the kids running around. Just moving back and forth.

I know you’ve never used one, but I’m sure someone here has had experience with a D7000 with the situation I’ve described.

Hi again. I took a little time off from the whole camera thing, but now I’m back and considering a couple cameras again. Over the holidays I was trying to focus in what I thought was average indoor lighting with my K200D and 18-55 kit lens. I missed half the shots because it couldn’t focus in time/ or at all. I know that the K50 and K5 series will be a big improvement. But how good is the continuous auto focus compared to, say, the D7000?

Yes, I’m leaning towards getting the K-5 II or IIs. Probably the II so I don’t have to deal with the moire issue. Has anyone had much issue with moire?

Nice! That is what I’m looking for.

---------- Post added 11-06-2014 at 05:46 PM ----------

I think so too. A good lens will make better images, but in my case a body upgrade will make all my lenses better, to a degree.

Thanks everyone, for your input.

That flexibility would be great to have.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I am leaning toward the K-5II or K-5IIs.

I hope to not offend the hardcore Pentax people here, but also I started thinking about the “other” brands. I like that they seem to have better auto focus. Although I hear that the K-5II(s) have much improved focusing. I realize jumping ship would be more expensive for me in the long run and may or may not yield me much better results, if any. I have been looking at the D90, D5100, and D7000 with maybe the 18-135 VR lens. I’m sure a few of you have had experience with those. Would I still be better off with the K-5 series and the lenses I have?

It's the Pentax-A 50/1.4.

---------- Post added 10-27-2014 at 11:15 PM ----------

I was thinking about maybe getting either the K5 or K5II used from B&H. Maybe with the tax refund. I heard the K5 had sensor stain issues. And also some focusing problems. Did they work out those problems? How can I tell if a specific unit is from a newer batch that had those issues fixed?

I think you may have answered my question with your question. I am not totally pleased with the quality of images with the 50 in low light. I have to normally use it wide open to get a decent noise free image at a fairly low ISO with the K200d. That usually means the aperture is around 1.4. But the image is soft at the aperture. And in low light it's hard to see well enough to focus accurately. So with the better high ISO performance of the K5II I should be able to use a smaller sharper aperture, thus creating a sharper image. And I should be able to see a little easier with the better viewfinder, correct? But will my images be better with the kit lens too?

---------- Post added 10-27-2014 at 08:04 PM ----------

I think you are right. Would I still benefit greatly from the original K5?

Need some advice. I currently have a K200D, an 18-55 kit lens and some manual lenses. My Vivitar, 2 step 70-150 manual lens is probably my sharpest lens (very sharp on still shots). My 50/1.4 is the next sharpest. I like taking a variety of photos, such as portraits, photos of children, outdoor events, etc. I would like to take better low light images of the children, but without having to pose them and keeping them still. And have more keepers on outdoor events. I recently took pictures at a road bike race that was hit and miss with the kit lens (although not a sharp lens to begin with). And the Vivitar too was hit and miss. I used catch in focus with the manual lens. Worked better than I thought it would but still not what I call sharp. Also I noticed background imagery like mountains were not very sharp with the Vivitar even at f8-f11.

My question is should i upgrade to something like the K-5 or K-5II considering the lenses I have, or upgrade to a better zoom lens such as a Tamron 28-75/2.8 or others to be able to shoot better in low light and capture better outdoor events.

Thanks for any help.

No I just took out the batteries just to be able to shut off the camera. Then I put the same batteries back in. After that it seemed to work fine.

Bad camera or bad cards

Greetings. I just finished taking some pictures with my K200D. During the outing my camera froze. Even turning the power switch to off did not turn the camera off. I had to take out the batteries. After putting the batteries back in and powering up I was able to shoot as usual. Pictures I had already taken seemed to be fine on the card. When I got home and tried to review the images they were corrupted. All except for two were bad. I put the card back in the camera to review them that way but they all now showed a ? for each image in the thumbnail view. I checked a different card I had used a week earlier and it also had a few images that had the ? in thumbnail view, although the majority were just fine. Has anyone else had this happen to them? Is it that both cards are starting to fail or is it something in the camera that is failing? Thanks in advance.

Infrared Focusing

I used to have a Sony DCS F707 that used infrared illumination to focus in total darkness. It was quite accurate if I recall correctly. My question is: Why can’t DSLRs use this technology to do the same? This would solve the low light focusing issues. I’m not up on the technology side of DSLRs, so my question comes purely out of ignorance.

I’m considering buying the K-r but am uncertain because of the loudness of the shutter. I was wondering if anyone has had any bad experiences with the camera being too loud and disruptive during a event, gathering, etc.

The only place I have seen any Pentax DSLRs in Vegas is at Frys. They don't have the K-5. I did see a K-R about a week ago there.

Hi All. I have a Metz 50 AF-1 Flash and I need one of those rectangle flash diffusers. The thing is, I need it for Saturday. I won't have time to get one on ebay. Does anyone know if there is a generic one that might fit that I can pick up from a Best Buy or Frys (I live in Las Vegas)? Any ideas?

Today at Photoshop World Expo in Las Vegas I was cruising the aisles when the familiar red PENTAX letters on a camera strap caused me to do a double take. Sure enough a lady had a K5 around her neck. I chatted with her for about 5 minutes and told her it was nice to see a Pentax at the Expo because, as expected, all the others who brought their cameras were carrying the other two brands. It was a great time nonetheless.

In the morning I met a young woman who turned out to be a photographer. I told her I also loved photography. She asked what camera I had. After telling her, she said jokingly, “you're one of those photographers”. I just chuckled. Back for more abuse tomorrow. LOL.

Jpeg settings for k200d

Thank you Marc for addressing my question. It sounds like as much work up front in JPEG as there is PP in RAW. So I should just stick to RAW.

To answer your question CR. I have a friend who has a Nikon D90 who just shoots JPEG and her pictures come out great most of the time compared to my JPEGS shot with default settings. I was just curious to see if it was possible to tweak the settings to get images close to hers. She btw just shoots auto everything.

Anyone out there shooting great shots in jpeg with their 200d? What setting are you using? I shoot RAW now but am wanting to try jpeg again. Shots I've taken in the past have usually come out flat. Thank you.
