Price drop - now including free shipping in $220 asking price. As a Pentax Limited, it's a beautiful little lens, an engineering marvel for how compact it is. Another forum member listed a DA40 last week for $275.

I very rarely see any DSLR users in public with an add-on flash or a prosumer-grade lens. Most DSLR users I see are using just the cheap kit lens that their camera came with in Auto-mode, flashing at subjects 50-feet away and grumbling about how one day they're going to get serious about learning to use their camera (to get photos that are less disappointing). If they upgrade at all, it's to get the inexpensive telephoto kit lens or occasionally they'll spend the big money to get a all-in-one super-zoom lens. That's it. After they give up on their "professional-style" DSLR that largely fails to deliver on the promise of professional-quality photos, the camera becomes a hand-me-down to a relative or a good used deal to a friend or co-worker. Finally, it's back to snapshots with a compact or cellphone and taking advantage of amazing features like blink and smile detection.

As for myself, I'm the suspected photography pro. Not because of the equipment I have or because I'm moving around to get various angles but because I'm wearing a $5 set of foam kneepads!

I've got one of these on the way myself but the HUGE plastic petal-shaped hood looks too fragile to last indefinitely. I'm thinking that a better daily-use option (and ideal for aquariums too) is a 77mm rubber lens hood. But which one? I've read that some rubber hoods get their internal wire supports easily bent out of shape over time making them a pain to use. Screw-in seems better than bayonet-mount so cir-pol filters can be rotated with the entire hood.

This Hoya model looks pretty good (three collapsing positions) but can anyone suggest a better option for this lens?:

Upgrading to K-7; any tips?

I had a disastrous week of results recently after I had the foolish notion to change my K-7's D-Range settings to enable both Highlight Correction and Shadow Correction. From the manual:

"D-Range Setting: Expands the dynamic range and enables a more ample gradation expression by the CMOS sensor and reduces the occurrence of overexposed and underexposed areas."

Sounds like a good thing, right? Unlike in the K-5 manual, they don't mention that with Highlight Correction on, minimum sensitivity becomes ISO-200. It appears to me that with Highlight Correction and Shadow Correction on, the camera underexposes and then selectively pushes the image brightness which is typically NOT a good thing on a K-7 (shadow noise at ISO200?)

Other gotchas are the settings for Lens Correction, Lateral Chromatic Aberration Adjust and Horizon Correction. Turning those features on drastically slows down the camera due to the extra processing required. My advice would be to test carefully if you choose to turn any of those things on. The results may not be what you were expecting. The K-7 (and K-5) has a ton of advanced features so it's well worth reading the manual - something I usually don't do. Enjoy your awesome new camera!

Hopefully, you're not too bothered by the new "Unilateral Pricing Policy" that Pentax put into effect today. I just last week ordered a new K-5 to upgrade my own K-7 but given the pricing news I'm inclined to return it now.

Barrel distortion is only an issue with last week's $500 copy of this lens. This week's $650 version is MUCH better I'm sure! NOT!

New Pentax Pricing & SDM Debacle

Well, it's April and Pentax lenses prices have now changed at B&H:

Yesterday:
DA*16-50mm f/2.8.....$ 799
DA*50-135mm f/2.8...$ 849
DA*60-250mm f/4.0...$1,249

Today:
DA*16-50mm f/2.8.....$1,500
DA*50-135mm f/2.8...$1,600
DA*60-250mm f/4.0...$2,000

How many of you are willing to order this week and pay nearly double what other people paid last week for the same item? And seriously, $1,500-1,600 for lenses with inexpensive, slow, old-style AF micro-motors instead of modern USM ring-type motors? No thanks!

Look at the current retail prices on the Pentax web store:

DA*16-50mm.....MSRP $1,500.....(street price is $799)
DA*50-135mm...MSRP $1,600.....(street price is $849)

The big question is by how much retail prices will be cut next week. Even if retail prices drop quite a bit, then we'll still be left with significantly higher prices, no?

K-7 and Pentax Extended Warranty

I'd be interested to hear Pentax's position on the dealers that are selling the extra 2-year warranty to their customers for as much as $40. Seems a little odd that the warranty is being handled in such a way that dealers have an easy time ripping off customers by selling them something they could get for free if they only knew in advance. I bought my K-7 from Abe's of Maine specifically because they offered the extended warranty for free with the camera. B&H and Adorama each charge $19.95 extra for the warranty.

Has this been confirmed? Because the Extended Warranty terms on the Pentax site read in part:
"The extended limited warranty is registered with PENTAX Imaging Company. It is not refundable or transferable and is only valid if received at the same time as the purchase of a new PENTAX Camera, which is covered by a PENTAX New Product One-Year Limited Warranty. This extended warranty applies only to the PENTAX Cameras distributed solely by the U.S. distributor, PENTAX Imaging Company, 600 12th Street, Suite 300, Golden, Colorado 80401 and purchased from a PENTAX authorized dealer."

I further understood that the Pentax Extended Warranty needs to be on the same sales receipt as the K-7 camera itself. Maybe I'm wrong. Pretty shady then that Beach Camera sells the free Pentax Extended Warranty for $40 extra.

The free Pentax Extended Warranty is why I went with Abe's of Maine for $998.95 less $10 promo code less 4% BCB = $949 with free ground shipping.

K-7 kit price hits new low - $949 shipped

I missed the one-day deal Abe's of Maine had 3-weeks ago for the K-7 kit for $999. Several vendors have the K-7 kit back down to that price again now but, as best I can tell, only Abe's of Maine includes the Pentax 2-year Extended Warranty (3-yrs total) for free. The Extended Warranty is $20-$40 on other sites and it must be included on your K-7 receipt to be valid. With free shipping, a $10 promo code and 4% BCB, the price drops to $949 with no rebate hassles.

Pentax K-7 with 18-55mm WR lens = $998.95
Pentax 2-year Extended Warranty (3-yrs total) = Free
Ground Shipping = Free
Less LOYALTY10 discount code = -$10.00
Less 4% Bing Cash Back = -$39.56
Net TOTAL = $949.39

I'm pretty sure this is the best deal available in the USA. I already got my BCB e-mail. Abe's of Maine is loosely related to Beach Camera/Buydig (all are owned by members of the Mosseri family):

New Pentax K-x Review

I'm right there with you. I keep waiting, and waiting, fora K200D successor model that will split the difference between the two. I don't need a $1,000 camera with so-so high-ISO performance and I'm not yet ready to settle for a "K-m2" sort of camera. I'm wanting to spend my money on a better balanced blend of build-quality (K-7) and performance (K-x).

Sometimes I get to thinking that, rather than keep waiting, maybe I should just sell-off my Pentax gear and buy where there are more options for camera bodies and zoom lenses. :(

Pentax DA55-300mm new for $310 shipped

I noticed that a seller who might be related to Wolf Camera (not sure but that's the implication) is listing the DA55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED new for US$299 with $10 shipping on a popular action site. They have two copies available.

Tempted as I am by this, I'm not certain that I'm sticking with Pentax long-term and now is not the time for me to buy another K-mount lens.

Bonne chance
