HD PENTAX-D FA ★ 70-200mm F2.8 at 5th February?

People will inevitably compare this lens with the current Canikon offerings - It is priced smack bang in with them. Speaking of the Canon which has impeccable optics and built in stabilisation I believe that this Pentax lens will need to be absolutely stellar in performance - considering you are not getting in lens stabilisation.

I personally own a Canon 70-200 non IS f2.8 and it is so ridiculously good I kick myself for hanging on to Pentax for so long.

I hung onto enough Pentax FF lenses that I can easily go there again in the future - and seeing as Canon has decided that the masses want MP over DR in their latest 5D model I guess there will be reason to jump back to Pentax again in the future. What Pentax does with Sony sensors is a special thing.

Canon 6D giving unexpected results?

Ok just had another go at it, this time using the grad filters as well as split toning and feel a whole lot better about it.

Could probably do with some NR in the car as shadow lifting introduced a whole lot of noise there.

Canon 6D giving unexpected results?

Although I am definitely loving the 6D there is a couple of situations I've come across where I am not getting the results I want. Just wondering if it is me doing something wrong or if the sensor capability is showing its head?

This pic is from the K5 with DA16-45 at 16/5.6

And this is from the 6D with 24-105L at 24/5.6

As you can see the clouds have a strong pink colour cast. Both pics were shot in Raw and then WB manually set to be equal (4000k) (K5 got it closest). The 6D seems to me to not hit the colours that I see as reliably as the K5. Just wondering if anyone knows of anything that is a setting or whatever on the 6D that I might be missing? I read a ton of reviews hailing the 6D as the 'do-all' camera.... but.....

*edit*
Colourspace on both cameras is sRGB!

The best and worse thing about going fullframe...

Perfectly said Rupert. I am well aware that my own shortcomings as a photographer are only going to be carried forward into whatever format I use. I have noticed an increase in 'keeper' rate though - by keeper I mean that the object was in focus and sharp enough for a print, not necessarily that the composition or artistic value was better.

Hey, yeah no worries.
Prices are what I paid in Aussie dollars. Current US exchange is about 0.84c for 1aud, so the prices are 15% cheaper in US terms
6D Body - $1680
EF50/1.8II - $125
EF35/2 - $275
EF100/2 - $390
EF24-105/4L - $420
EF70-200/2.8L - $1100
Total - $3990aud ($3350usd)

One point that Pentax has nailed is swapping lenses. On Pentax I can hold the body in my right hand using the grip and press the lens release, turn the lens with my left hand and remove. Canon has the lens release on the opposite side so I have to hold the body awkwardly in my left hand whilst pressing the button and remove the lens with my right hand. Something I'll get used to but the Pentax ergonomics in this regard are far better.

No, I chose the older Non-IS version due to reviews placing it ahead of the rest as far as image quality is concerned. I had considered the Tamron however I see reports of 'bad copies' and frankly for the amount of money they are there should be no 'bad copies'. I didn't see any such reports on the Canon version and I bought a 'like new' for $1000usd. It literally is in as new condition, I cannot see a single fault or mark on it anywhere.

Discovered another 'Worse thing'

The comments!
"Wow that lens is huge"
"You have a nice camera"
"Are you a professional photographer"

I've just been a bit dismissive but I think its gonna get quite annoying.

OTOH this 70-200 f2.8 L is stunningly good!

Cool squirrel shot Rupert, you always did have those! Nothing even close to squirrels around where I live.

Tuco, that's alright - I should have realised I'd be stirring a pot a bit!

Buttons, I have a Sony superzoom compact.

I have the Tak SMC 50/1.4 but the mirror hits the rear element at infinity focus ;)

Is the 55 all that different to a 50? I've always thought of them as being too close in fl to make much difference

Not particularly, the Sigma 17-70 OS HSM lens is roughly the same practical dimensions to the 24-105 IS USM lens, only difference being the loss of one stop at wide end in the canon. Unless you are talking about comparing to 'Q' system lenses, in which case I don't feel the Q system achieves what I want in a camera. Fine camera system it is, just doesn't tick my boxes. When my Sony finally gives it up I'll probably get a Q7 just for the image quality in a tiny package.

I do, a Sony HX20V and it is starting to play up, making some funny noises inside whilst focusing. Still does the job for me though.

Tuco, yeah all in the space of a month. Think I'm pretty right now though. Have been eyeing off the 300/4L IS though - But then I could buy a 70D with the 70-200 on it and get the same results for the same money. So many options in Canon land!

Both the best thing and the worse thing is having to buy new lenses! I've loved doing the research and then hunting them down, loved getting the mail packages and trying the new lens out and learning how they work and what images they produce. Worse thing - wallet damage! I've spent $4k on the jump, pretty happy though, the image quality is brilliant, all are prime like even the zooms. The primes are sharp wide open and the 100mm f2.0 is a thing of beauty! The 70-200 f2.8 L is a behemoth but the image quality is out of this world!

Anyone see any gaps?

I've had my 6D and EF50mm1.8II for a couple of weeks now, slowly finishing off my research as to what lenses I'll be buying to go with it. Just wanted to share some shots I've made so far - absolutely loving this camera!

Sorry :-(
Maybe CP next February will bring some good news!

Yeah, this weekend just gone Jb hi Fi had the 610 for $1550. Would have grabbed that except I really wanted to move away from screw driven af lenses. Af-s are comparatively expensive compared with the canon offerings, plus it's easy to fit Takumars to a canon. An adaptor is in the mail for those!

the k5 viewfinder is fantastic compared with other apsc systems, others are a tunnel really. I have the 6d in my hands now and the viewfinder reminds me of my mz-50, large and bright.

In Australia I have just paid $1660 for 6D body. K3 body is $1344. I paid $1650 for my K5 when it was released. Yes, I think improved ISO, GPS, Wifi and larger format is all worth the $300 body premium over the K3, additionally I can walk into multiple stores and buy lenses and other accessories - which I cannot do with Pentax.

I have listed some of my items in the marketplace, but no not all, K5 still has a performance edge over 6D in some specs that make it well worth hanging onto.

Thank you for all the memories and fun times we had together. Unfortunately it is time for us to part and a shiny new full frame Canon is currently on its way to me. I'm sorry that I could not have spent these thousands of dollars on a Pentax product, but such a product does not exist.
Please, I hope we still remain friends.

Well, seeing as I bought a Spotmatic last week I thought I'd put up a shot from the first film through it - a roll of expired Superia 400.

How do you guys scan? I have an old Canon 600f with the 35mm film insert, but the scans appear to be ridiculously grainy compared with the prints provided by the lab, is this just 'how it is'?

Oops, didn't realise I was still in Coffs, no I live in Tamworth now and the gentleman is a pommy import. I have been out putting a roll of Superia through it this weekend - mostly to see if it has any light leaks at all.
