@niceshot: I haven't said anything like that. It's just that the issue discussed here is a non-issue. Of course, a breaking mode dial is a warranty case, and it is being handled as such, and things like that on a product that just appeared on the market are common. I do not understand what people expect from a manufacturer, and I do not see how this is a case for which to get agitated like "I'm pulling the trigger on the K-1". Jeez, cool down everyone.

Put another way: If you expect a product with ZERO issues, and one for which replacement units are readily available, then don't buy a newly arrived products just days after it appeared in your country. Instead, buy the second version of that product about 1-2 years later.

Isn't that common sense?

Hey guys, if something is bad for Pentax' reputation then the mayhem you make out of an issue that can happen to any company.

The K-1 just came out, you knew you were buying a bleeding-edge (yes!) camera that just came into the country and there is more demand than supply, you knowingly bought this camera because you like the FA31, or DFA24-70, or whatever (I love them too), you have a repair case, and the manufacturer helps you out.

Yet you complain about... stuff.

I think in Ari's case, since he is a pro and apparently relies on his gear for a living, it's good that Ricoh made that move.

However, thinking a little bit further, with the current shortage in supply (which I'm sure Ricoh is working hard to mitigate), this "good service" to one implies that somebody else will get his body a little bit later. Suppose that guy would know it, I'm positive he/she would show up here and complain about the Ricoh policy of handling things in his case.

Hm.

@all of you complaining: you have bought K-1 instead of, say, a Nikon D810. You got one of the first bodies, there is still a shortage. You have saved, how much? $600? $800? Buying in the US, you saved another, what, $200, compared to the EU (where I live).

Yet you are complaining that Ricoh is not quick in replacing your body (an understandable policy given the shortage of supply) but instead asks you to send in the product for repair, which will surely be free under warranty. And you are complaining about $10 for shipping.

Seriously?

Pentax Full Frame - An official statement from Pentax (they listened!)

Hi there,

this is my first post in this forum. I am Pentaxian since the K10D, and have since then upgraded to K7 and then K5. By education a physicist, currently managing a mid-sized company. I am an amateur photograph. The K10D, K7 and K5 were cameras at the time that were EXACTLY what I wished for. Thanks Pentax! I used the 18-250 a lot on the K10D, and with the K7 stepped up and invested in a complete line of prime lenses (15, 21, 31, 35, 40, 50... you get the idea). Today, I am a heavy user of the compact trio DA 21, 40, 70 Limited plus the wonderful DFA 100WR macro, and use almost no zooms.

So here is my statement on FF: while I would welcome and probably buy a FF DSLR of Pentax, I have an even stronger interest that Pentax as a company SURVIVES - and survival is best secured by making wise business decisions. In this sense, I hope Pentax avoids the mistake of such an investment.

Again, I would _probably_ buy a FF DSLR if Pentax made one - even at $3k and even if I had to buy new lenses or use my DA lenses on FF with all corresponding disadvantages - but I seriously doubt that an investment in a FF DSLR would pay off for Pentax. And because I fear that such an investment would be a huge failure - and I need Pentax to survive for MY investment - I hope that they DO NOT make the mistake of developing a FF DSLR.

Why it would be a mistake: I do not believe it would sell, contrary to what people claim today. But I can well imagine Pentax coming with a FF DSLR with is of the size of, say, an EOS 1D, and all people around here whining that they expected a form factor like the K5. Or they manage a form factor in between, like the K10D, but for that have to omit the in-body shake reduction. How many Pentaxians would complain and not buy. To those who say a FF in a K5 casing would be possible: not with all the features you are used to (like a display on the back, and shake reduction). There is simply not enough space. Also, weight is an issue. Pentax today is excellent for the amateur or semi-pro, who values a light camera pack. No competitor beats the compact DA Limited lens system of Pentax. All these advantages were gone, the Pentax FF DSLR would be an expensive "me too". And since being a Pentaxian is (for many) also about being different, it would not sell.

F

PS. While I am writing about business sense, one thing to the Hoya-bashers in Pentaxland: it is SO easy to complain about "cost-cutting Hoya". Cost cutting sounds so cruel, so capitalistic, so lean and mean, so WRONG. But is it really? Cost cutting is very often the ONLY* available means of saving a company in the short term, when it is burning cash. Because of that, cost cutting is often (not always) less about sending employees on the street and more about securing jobs for the remainder of the staff. And cost cutting is not easy! - it is hard work. So I say "thank you Hoya for securing Pentax' future!". The further sale of Pentax to Ricoh may well be the next good thing for Pentax. So thanks again Hoya!

* Another way at Pentax' disposal was to simply raise prices. Much criticized, but correct at the time, through this the customers had to their share in helping survive.

The cheapest way for Pentax to make FF camera

Gentlemen,

In my opinion, your hype about full format sensors is misguided. The future is APS-C, just like in the film age - newer cameras were smaller not larger. So look who's making the beautiful small DSLR today? Right, Pentax. That's the future.

With the exception of the Leica M9, all full format cameras are HUGE, simply because the mirror swipe needed is related to the sensor size. The price to be paid for “Full format” or “Medium format” is: much bigger and heavier equipment (e.g., Nikon D700, Pentax 645D) or lack of features (e.g., Leica M9 with rangefinder in place of autofocus).

FF only gives you less noise if the pixel size is bigger, and then only for some 3 years, until the next APS-C sensor generation matches that noise level. So FF is just bridging the time until APS-C sensors have the noise level you need, which may be now, with the latest Sony sensor.

Higher resolution? Yes, but with the vast majority of the glass available, the sensors will outperform the lens, so what's the point unless you pay 20k+ for a system? Still, Pentax is there, with the 645D, (which I admire but will never buy, since I want to CARRY my camera not lock it away...)

Lenses like the Pentax Limiteds give you beautiful bokeh in APS-C. For my taste, beautiful enough.

With the new K5 sensor, ISO 3200 is very good, 12800 is acceptable (maybe with post processing) and 51200 available (and for small print formats, using noise reduction post processing, probably ok).

Best, C
