Tony Northrup: "Canon declares DSLRs are dead"

Absolutely. This is the major issue with youtube -- the information is heavily tainted by clickbait and influencers all grasping for dollars. Plus the popular names are usually rather immature which appeals to the very young audience that dominates these sites. That has had an effect on how videos are advertised too with the obnoxious, shocked face thumbnail in so many videos.

But also just in entertainment I find youtube can become rather annoying. Some will stop so the 'host' can lift up a snake oil product and peddle it for a period of time before returning to the actual content you clicked on to see. Some are decent about it though and will label the portions of the video which makes it easy to skip forward.

The ills of social media I suppose. It has become a revenue stream for so many either looking to supplement their regular pay or to become a full time job. Instead of it being a place for regular people to post videos on how-to, history/education, reviews, and yes stupid fun it has become a commercial enterprise for even the content makers.

Tony Northrup: "Canon declares DSLRs are dead"

I think we should stop valuing the opinions of youtubers. It seems more like Northrup is declaring DSLRs are dead through Canon stating the 1DX mk III will be the last flagship DSLR they offer. Yet Canon released that body just last year and also says it will be a few more years before they're gone from production. So even if it was true, it won't be overnight. He's just creating drama to get a discussion going. Plus Pentax doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Nikon still fields a few DSLRs at the time as well. Lots of DSLRs.

And this is why I say stop valuing the opinions of youtubers. They get paid on views. They get the most views by creating contention and discussion/argument. So they often say controversial statements for the money they make off of them. People will post their videos in threads just like this, which will net them more views and more money.

It's a racket. These multi-millionaire youtubers don't need any more help on extending their wine collections or paying for that 3rd vacation home in the mountains. And we're funding that by discussing their stupid videos.

Haha fair. zip lips from me too.

And yes I think so too on this lens. The 24-120/f4 does seem to be sharper across the frame and of course more versatile outside, but I'm still interested more in the 28-75mm f/2.8 just for the extra stop.

Similar prices. I'm not buying anytime now though so plenty of time to read the reviews and ponder. Probably can't go wrong with either though. The modern lens designs are so much better than past generations.

Version 4 is the 2020 year version, so there are no more updates. But free if you were interested in trying it out long term.

I see it on slickdeals dot net but Pentaxforums scrambles the link oddly, so search for luminar on slickdeals if you're interested. I used a spam email account and didnt sign up for their advertisements. FYI

Nice pairing! That 50 f/1.8 S is just as sharp as the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART stopped down to f/1.8 !! And it has a nice rendering both in and out of focus imo.

mirrorless recommendations

If I wanted a modern APS-C mirrorless system, I'd likely chose Fuji. Specially an X-H1 body. It is the most DSLR similar in style with a really nice handgrip. The lens lineup is rather nice imo.

If I was moving to a modern FF mirrorless system, it is got to be Nikon all the way for me. Closest to Pentax in ergo and sealing. Z6II or a Z5 body. And the S series of lenses are incredible.

Sony has a really robust system too for both APS-C and FF mirrorless, but I'm not fond of their ergo on the crop side and the FF side tends to be more appliance-like to me. Plus I'm not fond of their color reproduction. But all these things are subjective. They do seem to have the most lens support though.

And I've never liked Canon for a number of reasons that have translated over to mirrorless. The entry bodies are junk for the money, but the higher priced bodies are very competitive. I think they may have the best autofocus system.

If you're buying them I'm on board!!

But yeah maybe one day. It does seem fairly compact. I do wonder how wide the corrected view is at 14mm versus the corrected view of 16mm of my current lens.

I'm more inclined to get that 40 for walking around. I have the 50 f/1.8 and its super sharp and clean. But having a slightly wider FL would be better for walk around. Plus the 40 is muffin sized!

Nikon Z6 for legacy glass?

Hello to you! I'm glad to be of some help.

It is an interesting questions. I just tried it on my Z5 using a Pentax M 28 f/2.8 connected with a cheap Fotasy PK adapter. In aperture Priority mode, the camera's settings will change on the fly. So if you have the lens ring set to f/2.8, and the camera senses 1/20, and you keep the ISO the same but change the lens aperture ring to say f/4.0 the camera will now say 1/10 (as example). So it is metering on the fly to give you 'correct' results of the light of your scene.

You can set the viewfinder not to correct for the lack of light (for instance if you step from f/2.8 to f/4 you can see the viewfinder get darker) OR you can set the viewfinder to correct (where it pretty much maintains the same brightness).

When the viewfinder settings get too dark though, the viewfinder will get grainy so keep that in mind. It isn't as clean yet on the view when in darker settings. It doesn't affect the image quality, just the viewfinder.

It makes it easier to get a more accurate exposure though since what you see in the viewfinder is essentially what you get (again, if you set it up in this manner).

That DA 50-135mm is such a gem optically. You can get a nice 70-200 f/4 for full frame and get near equivalence though (and one without that horrid SDM).

I owned a K-1 for a time. It actually was where I realized it was time to sell the Pentax kit and move on. Image quality is incredible with it. But yes the Autofocus is lacking, its big, its heavy, its loud. Ricoh wasn't releasing enough lenses (at the time) to make all the issues with it worthwhile for me.

I ended up selling the K-1 and a bunch of K mount lenses and buying a D750 and a bunch of F mount lenses. It was a much more modern and fresh system in my opinion.

I used that for several years until the Z system launched the 2nd gen bodies and ended up dipping my toe in the water with the Z5 and an FTZ adapter. I really like the Z body. It's Full Frame but as small as my previous APS-C K-5 II. I made it a bit taller for easier hand gripping with a battery grip. Been a joy thus far!

I will say for you, Ricoh may very well release a K-1 III with the K-3 III's processor and a modified autofocus system from it at some point. But when that point will be is another guess. And that may be enough to keep you with the system. That said, they are likely the smallest brand out there and it shows in their release schedule. So you could be left waiting for years.

The Z6 has the top/shoulder LCD and a bit better autofocus system (plus better video support), but it uses a single XQD card
The Z5 doesn't but has dual SD slots.

The Z6 II has an even better Autofocus system and an XQD slot as well as an SD slot. I was going for that but couldn't find one in stock before seeing the Z5 launched and on sale. The Z5 has the same EVF as the Z6II and Z6 though so you'd still get the same experience with respect to that.

The Z6 I and II also have a BSI sensor which does a little better at higher ISO than the Z5 but its slight. Maybe half a stop to a stop at most once you get past ISO 1600.

I will say with artificial lighting, I've noticed stronger yellow channel out of my Nikon NEF files than I can recall with my Pentax DNG files. It's as easy as moving a slider down a bit, but something worth mentioning. I noticed this even with the D750.

Oh and you will likely have to adjust the white balance as whatever its at will be recreated in your view. It took a bit of finagling to get that to look like what I see with my own eyes.

One thing you may or may not be expecting with the mirrorless is just how quiet they are! No more CLA-CLAK!#!# from the mirror flapping. Just a gentle 'ticka' from the mechanical shutter actuating. It's such a pleasure.

Yes details are very mushy and then it's tried to sharpen what is present.

But it is nice for such a tiny sensor! Can't expect much more than that I think. It does what it does and it does it well for it's intended purpose (quick snaps of family and environment and sharing of them).

Plus the native Z lenses have been quality. Especially the S lineup. And Nikon is steadily building out the lineup with much more haste than Pentax has offered in several years.

I still miss 3rd Party Tamron and Sigma that have not shown up to the.. party. yet. I still think there are some kind of legal reasons or quiet agreements between 3rd parties and Nikon on that. Maybe, in time, that will change though?

Lots to use with adapters though as you say Fen. And Nikon is launching an FTZ II purportedly soonish. I think its the same as the old but rounded on the bottom more. Should know more tomorrow on the release event.

This, lens options, and pricing. And likely more so pricing, that is beyond us "passionate" people here haha. The number one mention I see in the beginner photographer corners of the internet is pricing. Got it for cheap, don't want to pay too much, bundle deal etc.

And it is amazing how many people I've seen that have an old digital camera and only one or two lenses. And they use that for years and years contently.

I think it is mostly armchair geeks and retirees cashing in the 401k that are the big money spenders here. In general. Outside of professionals that NEED a specific setup (and then use it until the 'wheels' fall off of it).

Lots more people who think 500 or 600 dollars is a very high amount of money to spend. And probably so considering their location and experiences. I'm not shaming anyone (to knock that idea down before it starts), but am pointing out there is a sizeable portion of the community that spends little on their photographic pursuits (in comparison). And those people likely aren't geeking out on DXO charts and the like!

They are rather fickle in what visually appeals to them, I've found.

I once spent time scouting areas, found one of a field with a pond, some trees over looking the back edge of the pond, and a barn. Beautiful rolling terrain. Occasional horses or cattle.

Then I took a year to go back every season and capture a scene at the same location. Four unique 'views' of the scene with different weather and foliage. Then composited them into a single image.

The resulting image was pretty nice. And a great deal of work to accomplish. Made for a photo contest as part of a local festival.

I took home second place.

Lost to a simple highly bokehed photo of a rusty hand rail; I lost to a photo of a straight piece of rusty pipe.

That's the last time I entered a photo contest. Most times the judges are not photographers. I would have been happy to have come in second to a lot of photos that day. But not to a rusty pipe.

At least I placed above the photo of a mailbox. So there is that.

Nikon z7 Pentax K-1

The EVF just makes it easier to manually focus. Mainly due to being able to zoom in through the viewfinder and also have the focus peaking in the viewfinder. Plus the view itself seems larger. It's a really pleasant experience. So all those things combined could be the reason for the sharper focusing.

On the autofocus side it's going to be sharper simply due to the way mirrorless cameras handle focusing. Similar to liveview on a DSLR (but much faster than Pentax liveview!). It's generally more accurate. And usually no need for micro-adjustments on the mirrorless. If you haven't dialed in your lenses on the K-1 that might be a reason for some of the sharpness differences.

Nikon colors are much different from Pentax. That's one thing I noticed when I first started using a Nikon body. That said, I think Nikon tends to saturate the yellow channel more than Pentax. But overall yes they are quite nice. And the many profiles that are embedded into a NEF really give a lot of creative options on this. At high ISO the K-1 has a bit of purple cast once you get into extreme levels. The Z7 doesn't. That said, Ricoh resolved this with the K-1 II. So maybe that's also another of the reasons?

Yet you're running into a buzzsaw of hardcore Pentaxians here. So you're not going to get many takers to agree with you, maybe beyond me. Because I've used both systems rather extensively (including owning a K-1). The Nikon Z system is just superior when it comes to focus accuracy and image sharpness. That 24-70mm f/4 is much much better than the Pentax 28-105mm ever wished it could be (yes I owned this too -- two copies actually). The Nikkor is sharper than even the Pentax 24-70mm f/2.8 stopped to f/4 in the center -- which is an impressive feat.

Those Pentax LTDs are very old designs which gives them "character". The S series Nikkors are perhaps more exacting and accurate. You must add the "character" in post, if you so desire.

That said, both are nice systems with different qualities. But man don't expect a lot of positives here for the Nikon. The people here love Pentax and hate Nikon! They'll deny it but proof is in the subtle word pudding!

Oh. They may be a lot of things. But we can go beyond maybes and get a bit more definite. And we can do so just being involved in various Nikon-centric forums and communities (and thus seeing what the discussions are about). Of course there are exceptions to the rule, but most people have moved on it seems.

And I responded to Mac's post at length. If you don't like what I said, I can't help you. But I covered it already, both in my response to him and other posts in this thread.

It seems around 60pct of Nikon sales are in Mirrorless. Nikon is slowly discontinuing some of the DSLR lenses and transitioning more, not entirely, towards mirrorless.

The Z50 has been around for a couple years though. It's a mirrorless Dx body. So it isnt as if Nikon is forcing people to this retro body if they want a crop mirrorless.

And the Z mirrorless system as a whole is only 3 years old, a baby. It will grow in time.

You have driven the compatibility issue almost as many times as you mentioned your KP here. :p But the overwhelming majority of Nikkor lenses sold in the past few decades are in-lens driven and supported by the FTZ. The lack of a screwdriver motor is only an issue to you and 5 other people.

And this is provable because if you visit Nikon forums, you'll see little discussion on it if at all in the many threads. I think I've seen 3 or 4 threads total out of the thousands posted in the past couple of years. Besides, there are rather affordable in-lens variants designed since Nikon started doing in-lens designs in the early 1990s, plus quality third party designs for most of them. Many with superior optics over the old screwdriven designs.

It's just doesn't seem to be that big of an issue to most folks, so I'm not sure why you continue to harp on it over and over.

Nikon has already stated they are investigating a FF retro MILC for the future. With the semiconductor shortage, I'm not expecting it in another year though.

No, that's not a troll. And you should be careful with using epithets.

But the fact is there are extremely few people discussing the lack of a screwdrive adapter for Nikon mirrorless. It happens, but it's rather rare compared to the vast number of other threads out there about the mirrorless system.

I think that is mainly because of what I've already stated -- Nikon began putting motors in the lenses in the early 1990s. And there are only a handful of lenses on the retail market sold as new that do not have a focus motor in them. The majority of people (spending money) don't seem to actively use those. It's a non-issue for most.

I'm sure there is a number that do. But if the number is large then they are just very quiet on it. I don't think that's the case.

Again you'd want Nikon to spend precious resources on R&D and a new SKU for this item that few people seem to want, all to cater to a handful of people that don't seem to want to spend it on new lenses. It's a poor business proposition. Nikon, and frankly all manufacturers, isn't after the budget minded these days as the photography market is becoming smaller and increasingly more premium. They have bigger fish to fry right now.

Maybe when they release their FF retro mirrorless they will consider the screwdriven adapter? But I frankly doubt it. I suspect it will be many many years, if ever, before they release one.

This is all academic though since all of you arguing for it don't even own or want to own a Nikon mirrorless it seems.

Your stance is confusing. You don't appreciate old glass yet are showing us photos taken with old glass. I remember way back you taking a stance that you could manual focus lenses easily and thus you didn't need advanced autofocus. Now you're full 180 saying you value advanced autofocus now that Pentax potentially has such as system. It's odd.

Nikon: again abysmal sales and forecasting to shrink in a growing market

I suspect this is a two fold reason -- 1) They were already the largest DSLR manufacturer in the world and 2) Canon also had some support via Sony Mirrorless in that there were already auto adapters for Canon EF mount lenses on Sony E mount MILC. I suspect many Canon shooters that were dabbling in mirrorless were using Sony bodies with one of the adapters. Once Canon launched their own bodies, some of these people shifted to a proper Canon body (with an OEM adapter).

Nikon weren't in the same position from the start size wise and they didn't have the luxury of having another manufacturer essentially keep their seat warm for them on the mirrorless side.

That said, DSLR and DSLR lenses still account for a large portion of sales it seems. Depending on your market. Still over half of sales for Europe from what I gather.

You fill out the repair sheet, send in the lens with it, pay via their website or over the phone with them, they will charge the base rate at minimum. If the repair warrants costs outside of the base rate, they will contact you saying such to make arrangements for the further payment.

For decentering.. I think it is hard to tell.. they could get it fixed in the base rate. I suspect they are simply going to replace the decentered lens element(s) so it really depends on the extent of the damage internally. They'll make sure to let you know if they want more money.. don't worry about that.
