Ebay prices gone bananas - what are the alternatives?

Inflation has gone 'bananas' (as you put it).

This means everyone wants more for their items. And that applies even to really old camera lenses. Some places are more ahead of that curve than others.

Quite nice. I had to click on it to get the full detail, but it does punch up the sharpness. Did you correct for CA in post or is that straight from the camera?

DPR - why we're changing the way we process lens images

I think one should also take into consideration the context of when these "rules" were set in place -- a decade or more ago when computer processors weren't so powerful as they are today. So sites such as DPR probably wanted to show off the lens as it is but also because performance might degrade on camera reviews with all the corrections enabled. Today it might not be as big of a deal with processors many times over more powerful in our cameras, at least on the flagships (such as the K-3 III).

That said the only way to be sure would be to run tests. But I'd only do that if you really have the itch to find out. Seems tedious to me.

DPR - why we're changing the way we process lens images

Hmm I'd think the answers to your questions depend on the camera body. Some are quicker with it than others. Something high powered like a K-3 III might very well be able to chew through it with no problem. That said, there is still some form of overhead to it by nature.

In post it's the flip of a slider (at least in lightroom). Can adjust one image then bulk copy the settings to an entire series of files. How long that takes will also depend on the computer involved and the number of shots.

That said, if the image taking is very fast paced and getting the shot is critical, I'd rather err on the side of caution and disable all corrections in camera and opt to move those over to the PC.

If I was doing only 1-3 fps clicks here and there it probably wouldn't be worth it though. Unless you were already going to post process anyways.

My take at least.

A lot of people do this when it decreases burst rate or camera response (due to it choking on processing the images in camera). One can process them at home where time allows.

Tony Northrup: "Canon declares DSLRs are dead"

Absolutely. This is the major issue with youtube -- the information is heavily tainted by clickbait and influencers all grasping for dollars. Plus the popular names are usually rather immature which appeals to the very young audience that dominates these sites. That has had an effect on how videos are advertised too with the obnoxious, shocked face thumbnail in so many videos.

But also just in entertainment I find youtube can become rather annoying. Some will stop so the 'host' can lift up a snake oil product and peddle it for a period of time before returning to the actual content you clicked on to see. Some are decent about it though and will label the portions of the video which makes it easy to skip forward.

The ills of social media I suppose. It has become a revenue stream for so many either looking to supplement their regular pay or to become a full time job. Instead of it being a place for regular people to post videos on how-to, history/education, reviews, and yes stupid fun it has become a commercial enterprise for even the content makers.

Tony Northrup: "Canon declares DSLRs are dead"

I think we should stop valuing the opinions of youtubers. It seems more like Northrup is declaring DSLRs are dead through Canon stating the 1DX mk III will be the last flagship DSLR they offer. Yet Canon released that body just last year and also says it will be a few more years before they're gone from production. So even if it was true, it won't be overnight. He's just creating drama to get a discussion going. Plus Pentax doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Nikon still fields a few DSLRs at the time as well. Lots of DSLRs.

And this is why I say stop valuing the opinions of youtubers. They get paid on views. They get the most views by creating contention and discussion/argument. So they often say controversial statements for the money they make off of them. People will post their videos in threads just like this, which will net them more views and more money.

It's a racket. These multi-millionaire youtubers don't need any more help on extending their wine collections or paying for that 3rd vacation home in the mountains. And we're funding that by discussing their stupid videos.

Fred Miranda was going to be my suggestion. Highly populated and lots of various interests in subforums.

Friendliness is really hit or miss there. Some threads have been really relaxed and pleasant. Some are filled with facts nerds that want to one up each other with vacuous opinions held as truths and scrutinizing every little detail.

But I guess that's just the internet.

Haha fair. zip lips from me too.

And yes I think so too on this lens. The 24-120/f4 does seem to be sharper across the frame and of course more versatile outside, but I'm still interested more in the 28-75mm f/2.8 just for the extra stop.

Similar prices. I'm not buying anytime now though so plenty of time to read the reviews and ponder. Probably can't go wrong with either though. The modern lens designs are so much better than past generations.

Between all the graffiti, it isn't selling Seattle to me. Graffiti including such horrible messages as 'all cops are burnable' and 'riot revolt rebuild' Not the best choice of photographic subjects imo.

Lens output looks sharp though. Pleasing CA control as well. Noticeably improved especially at f/4 over the older DSLR version.

Is Nikon using a Tamron based lens...28-75, for a Z camera ?

The 28-75mm for DSLRs is inferior to the 28-75mm RXD for mirrorless (G1) which is inferior to the 28-75mm VXD for mirrorless (G2)

The difference in optics is larger between the much older DSLR variant and the G1 than it is between G1 and G2.

One other thing to consider -- Nikon isn't currently using off the shelf Tamron designs to fill their top end lines. This 28-75mm is not an 'S' series premium lens. For that, Nikon offers the Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 S lens at a whopping 2000 dollars. It's premium throughout though in both optics and handling.

This little 28-75mm f/2.8 is slightly smaller, lighter, and likely (judging from G1 reviews on an A7III) won't have the corner sharpness or bokeh smoothness of the more expensive Nikkor S lens (or G2 for that matter).

Plus, of course it only gets to 28mm on the wide end.

It's a lens for those with either size/weight and/or pricing constraints. I hope to see more Tamron designs in Z mount in the future though since Nikon don't seem to be using them as their top flight models. No use recreating the wheel for that.

There are plenty of thorough reviews in text and video to explain the differences. And what I find valuable in a camera may not be what you find valuable. So I won't hazard trying to get into details, however there is more than autofocus tracking and burst rate to consider as differences.

But yes 3rd gens hopefully will get some of the performance improvements of the Z9, if you should desire them. When that will happen and at what price is another story.

I suppose it just comes down to what level of performance is required for your type of photographic application and budget. There are different levels of hardware out there now in Z land for different requirements and they are all rather decent for much photography.

I'm more interested in new lenses coming out now than new bodies. The bodies are all pretty fantastic after firmware updates imo.

You guys are comparing a 1300 dollar body (that often goes on sale for 1000 dollars) in the Z5 to a 2000 dollar body in the K-3 III.

So I would have no doubt thinking the pricier body would perform better in certain ways. The Z5 comes with a non-BSI sensor, so low light performance isn't going to be as favorable as the BSI sensor based K-3III. You'd have to compare the Z6 II to the K-3 III to get a proper comparison in pricing tiers (both have BSI sensors for one, Z6 II has a purportedly more robust AF Tracking system with dual processors over the Z5 for two).

The Z7 II is 3 grand though at retail, so its in another category above both. Something to consider though -- features in pricing tiers.

You also may want to ensure it has the latest firmware as that firmware specifically improved the focus tracking and face/eye recognition.

Also there is a mode in the settings to ensure both face AND eye detect are enabled (option 'a4' in the autofocus settings under the pencil icon in the menu). I'm not sure that's enabled by default, seems like it might be on your copy but also might be worth a check to ensure.

But yes the focus mode automatically switches from general box/face to eye depending on distance of subject in frame. That is by design though.

I find it is a really capable body considering only 1k USD and it being the most entry in the Z full frame lineup. Not a miracle worker on face tracking if small in the frame, so expectations need to be tempered imo. Yet a nice body to dabble into mirrorless with or get one's foot in the door if building a system.

I agree. I also own that Tamron 70-210 f/4 in F mount (and adapter). I'd still like the native Z version of the 70-180mm f/2.8 one day.

It's funny that 20 years ago I scoffed at Tamron lenses specifically. Thought they were junk. Now I own several Tamron lenses in F mount and want them to sell their products in Z mount. It's quite the turn around due to their turn around on quality.

Nice pairing! That 50 f/1.8 S is just as sharp as the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART stopped down to f/1.8 !! And it has a nice rendering both in and out of focus imo.

I'm looking at the 14-30 f/4 for landscapes and this 28-75 f/2.8 for walkaround and general use. To resolve the 24 - 28mm aspect.

I do also wonder if the G1 was selected because it was more affordable for Nikon to purchase rights to use, if the G2 is somehow more uniquely designed for Sony E mount, and/or if Tamron wanted leeway to offer the G2 at a later date in Z mount!

Next couple of years should really show that.

Version 4 is the 2020 year version, so there are no more updates. But free if you were interested in trying it out long term.

I see it on slickdeals dot net but Pentaxforums scrambles the link oddly, so search for luminar on slickdeals if you're interested. I used a spam email account and didnt sign up for their advertisements. FYI

It's the G1 optical formula, apparently. So it has gotten a lot of flak, esp by Nikon users, but I'm really interested in it.

I have been asking Tamron representatives for a couple years now off and on to consider releasing for Z mount. It seems maybe Nikon is keeping a tight lid on it though, so this is a happy result. Of course it isn't going to be a lens as sharp and optically pleasing as an S line lens. They don't want to eat sales on the 24-120 f/4 S nor on the 24-70 f/2.8 S lens. If you could get 95% of the performance in this Tamron for half the price of the Nikkor S, why would anyone buy the Nikkor S?

So it makes sense to slot it into the catalog in a lower tier than S at a lower price. It's also nice in that since it is Nikon branded, it should have no issue with solid focusing (since it won't be reverse engineered) and from what I see it may have even improved weather sealing and coatings. So a lot like Ricoh's agreements with Tamron.

I'm interested in seeing if Tamron or Nikon release the 70-180 f/2.8 next! That's the other one I'd like. Small and light as an 70-200 f/4 but a stop faster. Unique to mirrorless.
