Hi All,
I'm not a total rookie, my K10D has 10,000 actuations, but I am a total newb when it comes to the older M42 lenses and what adaptor is required and the differences between the ones out there. I'd like to start playing with some older lenses and like the Pentax 135/3.5 I have now. Can anyone school me on which adapters are best and where to get them?

Not known for its close focusing ability, I've been trying to get a few good pictures of our roses this spring. We've had good luck with a couple varieties in particular. Here are few snaps, most have been taken at the minimum focusing distance and are cropped a bit.
This a "Gemini" hybrid tea rose from a couple weeks ago.
Here it is again from a few days ago. I love this perfect "pinwheel" shape.
This next one is in my opinion the best red hybrid tea rose available. Its blooms last for up to two weeks indoors after cutting.
Next up is a David Austin "English Rose" called Golden Celebration
Last is the English Rose "Pat Austin". We really regret buying this rose despite its lovely color. It goes from looking like this to being dead and dry in 1 day in our California heat.

Pass my regards onto your wife as well. I'm still slowly working my wife away from the auto modes on her point and shoot! You're a lucky guy to have this hobby in common with your wife. Bet that makes aquiring new lenses easier!
I'm wondering if you would mind asking your wife and posting what type of rose that is in your first post. I think it is the same one my wife are looking at and am curious before venturing a guess!

Hi John,
Here's my questions.
1. Is there a limit to how much barrel distortion the K-7 can correct? i.e., could it "de-fish" or correct the DA 10-17 fisheye?
2. Are all types of chromatic aberations fixed?
3. Is vignetting corrected in camera as well?
4. Is the "in-camera" RAW converter the same or has it been improved?

Hi All,
I'm at a trade show in Denver and there is a pawn shop down the street from my hotel. I went down today and saw a nice looking Vivitar Series 1 70-210 1:35 macro lens. I know there are many versions of this one and I think this is one of the nicer ones. It had a designation on the mount that said: "P/AK". (I think!) I tried to fit it on my K10D and couldn't. Is this not a Pentax mount designation? It looked to be in great shape. Can anyone tell me if this needs some kind of adapter or if it's the wrong mount all together? How much is this lense worth?

Thanks Peter,
I downloaded and installed the program, but don't see the information that I'm looking for. I'm sure I'm just not looking in the right spot. I see all sorts of info, but not the film speed/aperature/shutter speed etc. Where should I be looking?

Hi Chris,
I've been interested in this kind of lighting since I've seen some of the strobist results and videos with it. The thing that concerned me is the light output being too low to get a fast enough shutter speed and small enough aperature. Do you remember the settings you were getting from this? I don't know how to read exif off a web posted picture yet.

Hi All,
A couple weeks ago I picked up a Vivitar 255 from a pawn shop for $10. It's no powerhouse, but for $10, I thought I would match it up with an optical trigger and try some strobist type stuff for fun. So I bought a optical trigger from Photodiox for about $15. It works in the sense that it makes that Vivitar pop when my K10's flash fires. The problem is that the light from the flash doesn't show up in the image at all. At first I thought the flash was firing too late and the shutter may have already closed before the flash fired. So I went into Manual mode and fired some 1 second exposures and still nothing despite my seeing the flash go off and hearing it pop. So now my theory is that the flash is being triggerd by some sort of undetectable (to me) pre-flash on the K10 and it's actually done firing before the shutter opens. Is this possible? I know a lot of people have used various off camera flash setups trigger by PW's, GI's, and optical slaves so I can't be the only one with this experience. I've tried all the flash settings on the K10 (except red-eye ones) to see if some flashes had a really quick preflash that I wasn't aware of and no luck! Any suggestions?

Thanks for the responses guys, I think I'll resist the urge until I'm %100 positive it safe. I'll make sure to pick up a multimeter from a reputable brand; that's money well spent in my opinion.

Hi everyone,
I picked up a Vivitar 225 for $10 at a pawn shop today and plan to use it for strobist type experiments later on with ebay triggers. I've heard the old Viv's had high trigger voltages and can hurt newer SLR's. Can anyone confirm that this is the case for this flash as well or was it just the 283/285's? I don't have a multimeter to try testing it unfortunately.

Hi ccallana,
The Huntington Gardens are located on the south side of Pasadena, just off the 210 freeway. It is really a must-see for a photographer with a few hours to kill if you're in the area. It is the private estate of a former railroad tycoon from the early 1900's in California. The estate is over 150+ acres that is divided into various garden types from around the world. They have dessert, tropical, sub-tropical, australian, japanese, chinese, rose gardens ect. There is also an art Library where the famous "blue boy" painting and a real Guttenburg Bible are housed. Admission costs $15 for all day entry. You can Goggle it for more info, but I've been a member for two years and can spend a whole day there taking pictures and still feel rushed. I hope that helps!

Hi Everyone,
Despite all the rain we've been getting, we had a beautiful Saturday morning last weekend and I took the chance to get out and take a few shots at Huntington Gardens. Absolute minimal post-processing in Lightroom, just a little clarity and minor sharpening. I don't use a filter and this is the first time the sky has come through richly saturated for me. I am quite happy about that!
This little waterfall (2' maybe) was in the shade and allowed me to get a slow enough shutter speed to show the movement, but I had to use F22 to do it. I think it's reasonably sharp for F22, but I know a set of ND grads would probably have made it come out better.
All shots were taken with my only lens the FA 50 1.4 As always, C&C is welcome!

Living in Southern California we still have hummingbirds buzzing around in our backyard. We have a big hibiscus that attracts them as well as a feeder. This little guy is pretty territorial and he lets me get close. I only have the FA 50mm, so the lens was about 3 feet away from him. This is around a 50% crop or so. I know it's not the sharpest out there but I have such a hard time focusing on these guys. Autofocus always focuses on the leaves behind them and manual is pretty hit and miss for me yet. Anyway, this is my best hummer image to date. I know I have a long way to go to catch up to Chris and the other guys!

Hi Paul,
These are both very nice. I like the second one especially. On the first one, my eye keeps drifting over to looking at the background. I think the high level of contrast between the subject and the background in the 2nd shot is what makes it so great. Your wife must be thrilled, people have to pay a lot for shots this nice! I'd ask for a percentage if I were you!

These are great! Did you use a polarizer to get such a deep blue out of the sky? Whenever I shoot upward my skies always blow out. Any info on how you got such great shots would be welcome.

Hi All,
We had a lot of visitors over Thanksgiving weekend and I took some pictures of family and friends I hadn't seen for a while. All of these were done very quickly without flash and with available light. The indoor shots were under nasty tungsten lights, but I did enough work on them in Lightroom to make them reasonable. All shot with the FA 50. The shot of the male was done at 800 ISO at F2. I focused on his back eye instead of front one. Anyway all C&C welcome and appreciated!
A quick shot of their whole family outside under nice cloudly late afternoon light.
Another visitor's kids taken in harsh mid-day sunlight. I'm pretty sure I used fill flash on this.
Their adorable Girls are fraternal twins that are almost 4 and really well behaved...imagine!
Their son Lucas was also a gem. I gave him a hibiscus flower to play with and he followed me all day! Nasty bokeh huh?

Hi Robert,
I like the picture as well, but I was thinking there is quite a lot of background in the shot and she seems pretty far away. I think one of her standing or sitting in the middle of the tracks done close up just showing the tracks going into the distrance would make a great shot. My eyes don't really know where to go in the picture, they keep straying down to her boot ont he track or the sign in the far left of the frame, neither of which are important. Also, the daylight seems a bit harsh. You're on the right track though!!! (pun intended)

Hi David,
Thanks for sharing that info and for the new photo, it's great. It took me a while to realize he was robed/hooded and then I liked it even more. I was curious if you had any recommendations on flashes that can get the job done for portraiture and don't break the bank. You mentioned the Vivitars in this post, are they at the top of your list? I'm also currious as to what the ambiant light is like in the room when you shoot these photos. It looks so dark, but I know the camera has to have enough light to focus. Also, do you have to worry about the color temperature of your strobes and your ambiant lights matching or do the strobes overpower it enough to not be a problem? Thanks for the help!

Hi Dave,
Thanks for posting this, that's very helpful. So I understand that there is a Vivatar flash in there, but I have a few newb questions for you. The way I understand it is that the flash is mounted to the stand and then box is placed onto the flash. Did you say that there was aluminum foil inside there? Is it lining the walls for better output or what does that accomplish? Is the stand something DIY or a proper flash stand of some kind? Are you using those Gadget Infinity radio triggers I've read about? How has your experience been with them? I'm new to off camera flash photography, but I'd like to get in on it cheaply to explore it and this sort of work is very very inspiring. It also helps me convince the Mrs. that it can be done without breaking the bank. Oh yea, almost forgot, nice shot of Revelation 6:8!

Great shot. I love the details left in sometimes, it adds to the personality of the model somehow. I was wondering if you could post a shot of your setup for us? I guess I have to know what a "Cheerios Snoot" looks like! If you're getting these kind of results for that kind of money, please share some more details on how you've acheived it!

I lived and studied in Pasadena for many years and just recently moved a little bit aways. The first film I ever saw in this theater was "The Story of Ricky Oh". It's a classic cult 1970's Kung-Fu film that is just hilarious if you like really really bad/cheesy kung-fu movies. It has the classic scene from ESPN when a guy's head gets punched and explodes. It's one of the few truly gory kung-fu movies. Anyway, jgredline are you from Pasadena too?

Hi All,
Here is my situation. Last year my wife and I spent a year living in India (her native country) During that time photography wasn't nearly as important to me as now. I did manage to take a couple nice shots out of the 7,000 or so I took during the year. However I was using a Canon A70 which is only 3.1 megapixels. I really like one of the photos and would like to blow it up, but at least on the computer the resolution is pretty crap at even the %100 size. I've heard that there is something called Bicubic (sp?) resizing that can be done in the PP process that allows smaller megapixel photos to be enlarged more clearly. Can anyone school me on what this is and if I'm on the right track? Thanks!
