Don't have them in front of me at the moment, but there are electrical contacts, and there is aperture control. No AF.

I never thought of doing a square crop. It seemed counterintuitive for a landscape. But I gave it a shot, and I kind of like it. Dakujem! |

Good point, and fixed. My PP skills are sorta haphazard at this point. But I guess that's a topic for another forum.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I played around with the RAW file some more. Here it is cropped, cloud highlights reduced some, and slightly sharpened. |

First posting, so any comments or suggestions for improvement are very welcome.
I don't know why I like this photo; maybe the haze and the resulting surreal feeling and distance to the formation it implies. Who knows...
I know the tree in the lower left foreground is distracting, but I don't know what to do about it. |

Your post is confusing. Are you selling a 1.7 or a 1.4?

If she has the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in installed, PEFs should open fine. Until recently I was using Photoshop Elements 6 (3 versions old!) and with the appropriate version of ACR installed I was able to open PEFs with no problem. I have since upgraded to Elements 9 and just decided to change raw formats to DNG since I plan to use Elements for raw processing and not the Pentax Digital Camera Utility (because I find the interface completely confusing). To my untrained eye, I can't tell the difference between PEF and DNG. Just my 2 cents...

Thanks for the great advice and pics, Quicksand. I'll check out some of those accessories; I'm sure I can make something work.

I would like to convert the neck strap that came with my K-x so that it attaches only to one side of the camera. I envision the two ends of the strap connecting to a metal ring (like a key ring) which could then connect to the camera using some sort of quick-release buckle or clip.
Has anyone done this? What hardware can you suggest that I use? Thanks!

Shooting the 50mm wide open at 1.4, from roughly 4 ft away (my estimate) gives a DOF of less than 1.5 inches. Try setting the AF point to center focus only, then recompose. You'll still probably have to stop down some.

I just bought this one from Amazon: Amazon.com: Fotodiox Lens Hood for Pentax Ph-Rba SMC DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II Zoom Lens as 38741: Camera & Photo
Haven't gotten it yet, but it has supposedly shipped. It claims to be a bayonet mount, hopefully this is true because I tried a 52mm screw mount and hated it.
Strangely, the Fotodiox website does not list this product. Maybe it is discontinued and Amazon just had some in stock.
UPDATE: Just got this hood yesterday. The bayonet mount works fine, maybe a little looser than the Pentax-brand hood for my 55-300, but shouldn't be a problem. Even has the slide-out cover to access filters, just like the Pentax brand. And it was less than $9.

Most chargers these days are dual voltage (just read the electrical info on the back of the device, should say 100-240V input or similar) so you just need to carry a plug adapter and not a heavy bulky voltage converter.

Focal Length is Focal Length is Focal Length... it is an inherent physical property of the lens that is unaffected / unchanged by what size sensor is "seeing" the image created by it. I would venture a guess that a fair percentage, if not a majority, of first time DSLR users (myself included) have no experience with 35mm film or FF DSLRs, and these focal length "equivalence" references back to 35mm only serve to confuse unnecessarily. I think we'd do well to familiarize ourselves with lenses of different focal lengths and how they work with our own particular camera sensors, whether they be full frame, APS-C, 4/3, etc. Just my two cents...

I did the same thing; bought the white kit with the 18-55, then bought the DA 55-300 separately. If you're worried about black lenses on a white body, don't. The white body is actually black and white, so everything color coordinates perfectly well . Of course, it also takes great photographs as well.
