I'd been after one of these for a while but the price in the UK is a little more than I wanted to pay. Got a pristine copy off (US) Ebay for $70 while I was staying in SF last month, and I'm very happy with it..

At last, the thread you have been waiting your whole damn lives for!
It's entirely dedicated to squirrels (and potentially other squirrel-like rodents).
Yes - they're a photographic cliche, yes - you're sick of seeing them, yes - it's hardly even a challenge taking a photo of a squirrel (they love it), and, yes - they could potentially go in the wildlife thread...
...but wouldn't it be fabulous, fantastic, amazing, to have just squirrels (and potentially other squirrel-like rodents)? [If anyone already did this, I'm sorry; I did search first.] |

Todd, while I do agree with your points...
I have been involved in internet (and pre-internet, if you count BBS) discussions for far longer than I've been enthusiastic about cameras, and nothing that you've noticed is to do with photography forum participants. It's common to every kind of internet forum, and it's just human nature.
You talked about your participation in forums initially being about learning and teaching, and then gradually changing.. I think most people have the same experience. One of the advanced stages of frequent participation is meta-analysis of the forum itself, and it seems that this is where you are now. :D
Just put the whiners on your ignore list and enjoy the good bits, and if there's ever a choice between going out taking photos and staying in reading forums, don't do the latter!

I think he's simply wrong about everything. What matters is that stuff works well and looks good. There are multiple valid ways to do that. Retro is fine.
The irony: I bet he's an instagram user. :-)

Dr. Beaky was pleased that the Tesla coil reacted exactly as he had hypothesised to immersion in the bird bath. One glorious step further towards his final nefarious goal - although he would, of course, be needing a new assistant.

Get a manual fast 50, so f/1.7 (cheap), 1.4 (M is cheap, A less so) or 1.2 ($$$) and you'll be able to take a whole different kind of photo.
A lenses are easier to use than the older M/K versions, which make you work a bit harder and think a bit more (which can be a good thing).

It's totally irrelevant. You're effectively comparing two prints from the same negative.
"JPEG vs. raw" is a lot like "'Take your film to the local lab who never give it back' vs. 'keep your film and develop it yourself'".
There are circumstances where the former is better, usually related in some way to time. Usually it's not.
There is no great debate. There is understanding raw, and not understanding raw.

I don't think comparisons to cameras on smartphones are relevant.
People who currently use their smartphones to take photos are clearly happy enough with the image quality they're getting - i.e. they don't care a great deal about image quality.
There are many people who don't care about smartphones at all, but they do like to take photos, and currently use a P&S camera. This phone is a great proposition for those people, because they get a better camera, a better phone and one less device to carry around (or alternately, their nice camera with them all the time) plus instant email/facebook/etc sharing. That is a market worth having, and it doesn't necessarily cut into the existing smartphone market much at all.

Wow.. That's surprising! Whenever I max one of those things out the screen goes so white I can hardly see where to click anymore. I don't suppose there are more brightness/gamma sliders in the "Color Correction" section?
I saw the QuickGamma thing but, as you said, that didn't seem to help either. :)
If you can open a PSD, can you see the artifact in this?

Photography is frowned upon and often prohibited at this kind of beach, and I strongly believe that most of the women pictured would be very upset to learn that their unclothed bodies are on the internet.
Bad taste, sleazy, cheap, and the photos don't even look good. What a waste of time.
As someone else said, if you think it's OK with them then walk over there with a 50mm and try some more crotch shots next time. Report back, if you survive.

I'd break this down into 3 categories: Stuff you can do without taking your eye away from the viewfinder
* Change aperture
* Change shutter speed
* Change ISO (and switch to auto ISO)
* Change EV compensation
* Set aperture and shutter speed based on metered light level and EV comp (green button)
* DOF preview
* Back button AF (or AF hold)
* AE lock
* Focus mode (AF-S, AF-C, M)
* AF points (centre, selectable, multipoint)
* Pop up the flash
* Custom button, which does one of (2 here, 3 in next section):
1. File format toggle
2. Quickly turn on exposure bracketing Stuff you can do in 2-3 seconds (you have to look somewhere other than the viewfinder)
* Change mode (M, Av, etc)
* Change metering mode (spot, centre-weighted, multi-segment)
* Turn on live view (you could do this with your eye to the viewfinder but that would be counterproductive)
* Drive mode
* White balance
* Flash mode
* Some kind of fruity colour effect thing ("Natural", "Bright", etc) - never used it, I shoot raw.
* Electronic level (hit info twice, optionally)
* Custom button, which does one of (others in previous section):
3. Digital preview (no real use to anyone, correct me if I'm wrong)
4. Electronic level
5. Composition adjust (moves the sensor a bit, for people with imprecise tripods?)
(On "info" screen)
* alter auto-ISO upper and lower limits
* Number of AF points (5 or 11) (who changes this? why is it even here?)
* Highlight correction, shadow correction, a bunch of fruity filters, "HDR", yawn.
* File format
* Resolution
* Quality
* Shake reduction Stuff you have to poke around in the menu for
Everything else.
..I think that's fairly comprehensive. Bet someone else did the same thing while I was writing it!

Along the same lines:
6. Small robot arm to enable auto-aperture and auto-focus on legacy lenses.
7. "Rewind" button that reverses time so you can get the shots you missed. ("Freeze tiime" only available in Japanese firmware.)
8. "Beer Goggles". Asahi Extra Dry can be poured into accessory B-GG1 to improve the beauty of your subject.

It's as if the Pentax design team saw the Ricoh GXR and thought "Oh man! Let's see if it's even possible to create a stupider system than that!" and went to work mocking up some concepts, as a b3ta-style joke between themselves.
But tragically the head of marketing accidentally got CC'd on one of their emails and failed to appreciate the humour. Hilarity turned to despair as the comedy camera took on a life of its own.

You've touched upon a classic usability dilemma here. Extra controls make the experience better for someone willing to "learn to drive" a camera, but significantly worse (more confusing, more chance of accidental errors) for casual users who have no interest in learning anything. Most camera buyers are in the second category. Those of us who want to spend some time learning how to drive our consumer electronics in order to be able to use them faster/better are basically out of luck, forever. I'll never be able to buy a phone with a chorded keyboard on the side - instead I can choose between a million pretty touch-screens (rendering muscle memory useless) and a bunch of stupidly miniaturised qwerty keypads which look instantly familiar but are incredibly awkward to use.
Happily manufacturers know that a segment of the camera market is still looking for an artistic tool so we still have manual controls.
