Severely afflicted... Bought a KP and a DFA 15-30 while there were on discount! Been eyeing them for a while now and finally pulled the trigger. I was also being pulled by the Fujifilm E3 + 23mm f2 lens (mainly for the Acros film simulation) but decided instead to focus on building my Pentax kit

Just curious about your reasons for carrying the KP with DA10-17 if you would like to share - is this for backup or for additional reach on APSC with the 150-450? I think your K1 with the other lenses is already adding up to a good weight and could be a pain to walk around! Hope you have a wonderful trip and share some great pics with us.

Having never updated firmware on my cameras, can I just update my K1 for this firmware version without having gone through the previous updates? I am assuming this is a cumulative update rather than incremental? Thanks!

Also trekking the Kashmir Great Lakes this August.
Still mulling over my options but so far I have been planning to take my K1 with 28-105. I have a DA 15 that will be helpful to some extent. Alternatives are DA 12-24 (in the 18-24 range I think) or the Samyang/Rokinons. An alternative and much lighter package would be my K5 + DA 15 + 18-250.
Have a good trip!

I don't doubt the quality of the 15-35. The Tamron 15-35 has been very favorably compared to the well-known Nikon 14-24 here: Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Review - Photography Life
A review of the Wonderpana filter system for this lens is also here: FotodioX WonderPana FreeArc Filter System Review - Photography Life
Quality apart, it is the cost and weight that gives me pause. The 15-35 for Pentax is priced almost 1.5 times the price (here in India) of the Tamron 15-35 for Nikon/Canon. I suppose this is partly due to high import duties and partly due to Pentax pricing / additional coatings etc. And there is the additional cost of the 150mm filter system. I do wish Pentax came up with a good full-frame 16-35 f/4 or 17-35 f/2.8 like Nikon. ---------- Post added 05-10-2018 at 09:10 AM ----------
Agree with you on the cost. The 15-35 and the other three Pentax DFAs are all very expensive in India compared to their Nikon/Canon Tamron equivalents and are also similar in cost to the Nikon branded ones (despite Pentax not needing vibration control in the lens). ---------- Post added 05-10-2018 at 09:12 AM ----------
I share your concerns on the alternatives! Hope Pentax provides a more filter friendly/lower cost alternative soon. I can't wait to try my K1 with the DA 15.[COLOR="Silver"]

Many thanks acoufap - excellent information clearly explained with photos. My K1 is on the way and I have a DA 15 that I want to use. Your post certainly helps till I figure out a better wide angle alternative (other than the Pentax 15-35).
Thanks.

Hello All!
K5 user here and I had a bad experience with SDM on my 16-50 - even after getting it repaired under warranty.
I am considering the full frame K1 and related lens. I am concerned about the SDM failing on the FF lens (15-30, 24-70). Any comments on SDM issues on these new FF lens? I am in India and the Pentax support here is even less than what I saw in the US so I need to be very cautious before investing further into the system.
I see that there is a newer 'DC' focus mechanism on the 70-200 and the 150-450 - is this a case of Pentax finally admitting to SDM issues?
Thanks,
Arvind.

My choice: 3 DA limited lens: 15-40-70
They are extremely compact and suit 'my' focal length preferences.
DA 15 for the wide angle. I had a DA14 2.8 but sold it in favor of the Da15 as I liked the compactness.
DA 40 for slightly longer than normal. I have an FA 35 - excellent lens- but found it wider than I preferred. The DA 40 gives me great color and also has a slightly tight view that I like more than the wider F35.
I rarely feel like going over DA 70 (if shooting prime). I do have a Tamron 18-250 just in case i need that very long shot.
Enjoy your trip and the photography!

Thanks - we seem to be on the same page here. I have gone the same route as you have - Nikon primes (50 1.4D, 180 2.8D) and Tamron zooms (17-35, 28-75, 28-300 vr). I am looking for the full frame Nikon equivalent of my Pentax DALtd 70mm (a wonderful lens!) - that would be the 105 VR 2.8... I sometimes feel 85 is too short on the full frame. Only wish the 105VR came at f2 or f1.8.

I had to make a similar decision and sold most of my pentax kit except the four DA Ltds, FA35, Tamron 18-250, VL 125. I am without any Pentax body now since I also sold my Pentax 200D (I can wait for the next body).
My Nikon kit: D700, Tamron 17-35, 28-75, 28-300 (VR), Nikon 50 1.4, 180 2.8. The only thing I miss is a fast prime lens in the 80-105 focal range.
I heard too many reports of the Nikon zooms being great quality but too heavy to be carrying around all day! For my amateur shooting, I am quite happy with the Tamrons.
I am waiting for a Higher end Pentax body with a k-x like sensor so I can start using my Pentax DA Limited primes!

The camera has a mirrorless low light handheld mode that works very well. I saw a demo of a compact Sony with the same technology and the results were impressive in a dark room. So, low light High ISO should be very good but may work for only still life as this mode uses multiple exposures and then combines them.

I bought one off e-bay. Havent taken it out to the field yet but seems compact, well built and light. Did not have any issues when i used it indoors with my Pentax k200 pointing out of the balcony with a 70-200 lens. It folds down to around 17 inches and fits in a back pack which was the main reason I bought it. The head has three knobs to control tension/direction and also seemed good value for the price I paid (around US$250).

Any chance of redesigning the forum logo? :) I keep thinking it could be more ... elegant? I dont have any specific suggestions though.
