Pentax Diopter "-5" fitment on K bodies

Thanks for the info!

Just to clarify

> K series eyepiece accessories will not fit on M series and later bodies.
To be more specific, this means K series FILM (1975-1997) will not fit M series onward?

> M series or later eyepiece accessories (refconverters, magnifiers, diopters etc.) will fit on K-series bodies but not snugly and may even fall off if the camera is inverted.
To be more specific, M series (1976-1988) will fit on K-series DIGITAL (2006+), but sounds like it may be slightly "big"?

The question I have is whether the various diopters (e.g. PENTAX SMC Diopter Adjustment Lenses M-5 30731) will fit directly on a K body - K-30 in my specific case

It's not easy finding information whether this is a direct fit, or whether another adapter has to be purchased

Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone,

Would it be possible to upload a photo of cover of the Marumi DHG Super? I'm seeing $20 for 52mm on Ebay, and would like to ensure I receive an actual, non-fake copy

Thanks!

K-X with AF280T . How to use it?

Hehe I'm trying not to get too frustrated - the first few days was like this: :mad::mad:

I guess I'm trying to figure out a reliable systematic way to take fewer test pictures and understand the results that I'm going to get before I hit the shutter release button. I think at this point I've got to keep testing and build experience

You guys have given me some good rules of thumb to start with at least =)

Hi Canada_Rockies

The flash guide (ASA slider) was set at 100 - I forgot to mention this

The ambient light at midnight is supplied by a 60W bulb, so it is indeed low light but not pitch black

I'll take another picture without the flash but what I can say - I have tried experimenting with the flash off to double check my exposure isn't whacky, and I'm 99% certain F/4 @ 0.3" gives a correct exposure of +0 on the exposure slider

Regarding setting the shutter speed to 1/180 - this has worked for me as you indicated, it has removed the ambient light.

Is this the subtlety I should be aware of? If I want the source of light to come from my flash, I should set the shutter speed to 1/180, and use the guide + auto mode on the flash?

And if I want to fill flash when there is enough light, I would then leave the Av mode to calculate ambient exposure for me?

Thanks for your guidance and patience!

Thanks again for the helpful list Canada_Rockies!

Here were my steps

  1. Mount the flash on the camera
    • Flash pointed straight forward

  2. Turn it on

  3. Turn on the camera

  4. Set the camera to Av
    • Camera indicated F/4 and 0.3" for overall exposure of +0

    • Camera ISO set to 100

  5. Select the aperture to match red/green
    • At ISO 100, F/4

  6. Set the flash to red/green auto to match
    • Flash mode slider set to Auto Red

  7. Wait until the flash ready light comes on

  8. [Fn] and enable the flash
    • Flash mode set to Manual Fire

  9. Take a picture
    • Scene is approximately 3-5 meters away

My overall shot is overblown - white refrigerator is over blown, brown cupboards overblown

If I set the overall exposure down to -1, it looks a little better (shutter speed sped up to 1/4)

At this point it seems like a matter of making adjustments - but should the guide settings on the back be a little more reliable?

After trying out a few more test shots I'm still a little stumped.

Searching through the forums yields that at least on the K20D, the state of the flash (Red or Green auto, flash ready, flash not ready) affects the exposure setting on the camera

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-camera-field-accessories/84042-k10...tml#post853979

A follow up post indicates the same on the K-X

However, no matter what camera mode I use, and no matter what flash mode (auto red/green, manual H/L) - I see no changes to any settings on the camera.

Is my understanding/expectation incorrect? Or do I have a wonky flash unit?

Thanks for everyone's patience!

After some more digging on other forums, I may have found the reason why the flash doesn't feel automatic

No M or Av - use Tv or P: Pentax SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

Apparently M or Av mode is not "available" with the flash - Tv and P are

Summary

Credit goes to GossCTP for the information

I will try again later today and see if this holds true

Thanks for the additional bit of info!

I retried shooting with the method you describe below, and I ended up with an image that was very over exposed

The scene is, again, a low lit room. Most objects around 2-4 meters away from me

1. Set ISO to 800
2. Set Aperture to 11 (described by slider on flash)
3. M mode; thus set shutter to 1/4 second - exposure meter indicates -1
4. Take picture

I tried again, setting the shutter to 1/40 second, leaving aperture. Exposure meter indicates -3 blinking red

Take picture, and the image is now closer to natural - brighter than the ambient light and not over exposed

I thought the flash was supposed to read the K-S's ISO and shutter speed and make adjustments to the shutter speed if both K-X and flash are set to auto mode - i.e. Av and Red Auto?

Have I forgotten to factor something in?

I'll upload pictures later

Hi everyone,

I just picked up an AF280T to use with my K-X from ebay

However, I'm a little stumped - I've been trying to play with the Red Auto mode to take a picture in fairly low light of a white refrigerator 3 meters away from me.

The results are overexposed, and ghosted.

Perhaps someone can point out if I'm doing something wrong, or the Auto mode of the flash isn't doing what it's supposed to do

1. Flash in Auto Red mode
2. ASA slider set to 400
3. Finder A Check set to "on"
4. Head set to 0 degrees - pointing straight forward

a. K-X set to Av mode
b. ISO set to 400
c. Aperture set to 8 (this is where the thick line touches the distance/aperture scale)
d. ev set to -1/3
e. Shutter speed on camera calculated as 0.5" <===??? really?
f. Lens set to "A" for aperture

What I notice with the image is a ghosting effect and slight (1/3, 2/3) overexposure

What I also notice is that with the flash turned off or removed from the camera, the calculated shutter speed did not change

I get the feeling I'm missing something fundamental; at the same time I want to know if the flash is behaving as it should.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the replies!

After pulling off the default eye cup, experimenting with and without glasses, and doing more research into eye relief, basics physics has trumped me.

Glasses will always add distance between my eye and the viewfinder, nothing can be helped unless I wear my contacts. Solution right there, correct? I prefer my glasses over my contacts - better night vision, and over all vision - and avoid them unless I'm doing sports, but I do have a perfectly viable option.

Diopter would actually work, but I doubt they make diopters powerful enough for person of my visual impairment.

Ah well, guess I'm just going to have to be prepared if I'm going on a serious photo trip.

Any updates on whether the 1.3 KPS/Tenpa eyecup works with your glasses?

I own a K-X and I've also got the problem where

1. Bright sunlight - needs to be shielded out because I can no longer see the Information line in the viewfinder

2. A little assistance for manually focusing

There are many little threads in the forums but it seems like many of the same problems crop up - vignetting and blockage of the Information line

Too bad there is no obvious solution to this
