Interestingly enough, when I went to a local camera shop to inquirw about some cameras and see if they had any pentax bodies so i could put it in my hands and see if it works for me sans grip,I spoke with the guy about IS,VR,SR.
He was of the opinion that Nikon and Canon not having the IS in the body was better then Pentax and Olys decision to put it there. I wonder how much of what he was saying was his opinion, and how much was due to the fact that he was wearing a Nikon shirt and spectrum photo deals heavily in Nikon.

Yes, Im still flip flopping around...I had a bit of a curveball thrown my way too. I now have an slr with a lens. Note that i did say SLR not DSLR. I went to visit my mom and she had apparently had an slr sititng in her closet for years. Her husband got it for her and she never used it. She asked if I wanted it. I figured why not. It will give me something to mess with while i browse and hey a lens is always a plus.
Camera wouldnt start, needed some new batteries.. After putting new batteries in I tried using it, It autofocuses and takes pictures, but the parameters screen doesnt work at all. So i cant access any settings other the the wheel ones up top... I decided to google the camera and lens to see what i had....
The camera, a canon eos ix lite - used value according to the internet, about 25 bucks. Its a film camera that take certain film that has supposeldy been discontinued. The camera had somefilm with it, that had expired in 2006. I used a roll up and had it developed... not pretty at all. Not sure if it it the film or the settings on the camera but I wont be getting the other roll developed.
The lens was a canon ef 24-85/3.5-4.5 usm. internet says its about 250 used. It seems like it is a good length for walking around. I did some walking when i tried out the camera and it wasnt too bad. Interestingly, when i brought the camera to the local camera shop the guy said that the lens wouldnt fit the newer digital eos line. I questioned him on it so he tried it, and it worked, auto focused and everything.
Long story short. Having a lens would It make more sense to find a canon perhaps body only or some package that comes with a longer range to go with the one i have, Or do I try to sell the lens for 200 or so and put that towards a k7 single lens kit as taking 2 hundred off the k7 kit would bring it down to 750 or so. Heck it would bring the oly and pentax dual lens kits down to about 400.

Yeah Ive been looking in the on sale sections of a few forums.
I have been looking at Olympus cameras too. I think that the k7 s going to be too expensive for a my first SLR. The K20 would be nice but again the price is just a bit higher then I would like at most places.
That leaves the KX, but most places seem to be out of stock on the two lens 300mm kit. I was toying with getting the single lense kit and a tammron 70-300mm lens that is 160 or so.
I also decided to take a look around and check out some more brands that are more readily available in my area. The nearest Pentax place is boston, some 4 hours away. I came across the Olympus e series. The e-30 and the e--620 both seem nice. The 620 has a very nice price 600 for the body and two lenses. I do like the Olympus brand as my sw 790 has been great to me. I have also been reading up on the outlook of Olympus slrs and it seems like they are dedicated to making a splash which is helpfull for the investment purpose.
Any thoughts on the Oly 620/e-30?

I was searching around online and came across this on ebay Pentax k20D with lens kit and tamron 75-300 mm lens - eBay (item 130389733148 end time May-15-10 07:29:33 PDT)
Seems like a good package and with only one bid on it I might be able to sneak in a bid late and get the package for around 650 with shipping.
Sellers description: Quote: The Pentax K20D. only 3 mo old and very gently used. comes with all the extras. all are in new condition. you get the camera body with strap, battery, manuals, software, battery charger, lens kit. Pentax battery grip with remote control Tamron AF75-300 mm lens with hood Tamron camera bag. All items come in original boxes in new condition. all items have been very gently used but are in brand new condition. there are screen protectors over the camera displays that have been in place from the date of purchase. Having never bought anything on EBay, let alone camera equipment, is it safe enough that I wont have to worry about getting cruddy equipment? I know I would never buy a used PS3 or XBOX 360 do to the percentage of defective equipment floating around out there. Is there a rule of thumb for camera equipment, in regards to used equipment? I forgot to add, that the battery grip that comes in this package is apparently a K10D grip, not a K20D grip.

im doing a terrific job of driving myself a bit mad.
I keep running around in circles. The biggest pros to the KX are the price, and the second lens.
But I like the added weather resistance of the k20
The K7 is the next step up from the k20 and really its only 100 or so more for that camera but is about 300 more than the KX that comes with a second lens.
Im not sure if Im overvaluing the second lens of the kx, or the weather resistance of the k20/k7. I think that for experimenting that the kx is better but the k7 is better long term.
Also what other items would be needed upon purchase? I know a high capacity SD card and some sort of case for the camera. Anything else that is required or highly recommended?

A better question perhaps. If I were to go with the KX, how long could I reasonably expect to get out of the camera before looking for an upgrade? Two years?
Also, I assume that the KX is simpler to operate and learn with versus the k20/200.

As Im sure you guys get from time to time, Im new to this DSLR thing. I did read thre fraggers thread and how much the k10d was recommended, but seeing as its bee about a year since then i wasnt sure how much the landscape has changed. Perhaps new inputs has altered the recommendations.
Im looking to step up from the point and shoot camera. I can get some great shots out of it(Olympus 790 sw*) but i want more. Ive planning on getting a job on a cruise liner so i will be traveling quite a bit and am looking to take advantage and get some great photos.
**
Being that is is a cruise liner I would be near water so the weather sealed bodies would probably be a good idea. The primary reason i bought that olympus is because of its durability, completely water proof, resistant to cold and very sturdy. I do want a camera that I can go with for a while as this will be a good chunk of change. Im looking to stay sub 1000 though preferabbly around 750 if i can get away with it. I have NO lenses or really any strong desire for a particular brand.
After doing some research i found a Kx for 675 with 2 lenses Walmart.com: Pentax K-x Black 12.4MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm & 55-300mm Zoom Lenses: Digital Cameras
It seems like a great deal to get two lenses and a body for that price.
I had heard some negatives about the battery consumption and hard to find accessories for it, which had me looking at the d5000. Though the need to get lenses with vr in them scared me a bit.
I really am brand new to this and have little knowledge of SLRs so this is going to involve alot of experimenting, and i do want something that will last a while and age with me, whch is why i am eyeballing the newer cameras.
Ive heard good things about the d90 but thats getting a bit pricey especially compared the the kx with 2 lenses.
The k20d's weather resistance is also nice, and it looks like I can get it and a lens for 850, which is still a little high for me, when compared to the kx. And trhe K7 is 900 w/o a lens.
Basically im leaning towards the KX but am concerned about hitting its ceiling quickly and the lack of weather protection.
ANy advice or suggestions would be great
Ive been looking around and a question frequently asked by responders is what is the camera to be used for. Primarily I like landscapes, though I have an interest in action shots of skiers, surfers, ect. I assume that most SLRs will outperform a point and shoot in terms of speed shots.
