I'm sorry, but I cannot remember how the saga was resolved at this point! I've been out of Pentax for years now, and I did not own the 170-500mm for very long.

I have a K-30 with the same disease. But on mine, if I shoot a bunch of pictures, it will start working after a while. At least until after it sits unused again.

This community is great! I've yet to pose a question that the Pentaxforums Collective could not answer, lol!

Apparently my grandfather was both a gearhead and a hoarder, and from what I hear he left behind a pretty large collection of Harley Davidsons in various states of repair when he passed. I can only imagine the collection would have been worth a fortune now. Here's a picture from probably near the end of his life, with another Harley:

And the talk of a three-wheel motorcycle reminded me of another picture. Looking at the front end of the bike, it appears to me that it is possibly the same bike from the police photo. The two-tone front fender looks the same (click for larger version):

Can anybody identify the year/model of the Harley in this photo? It's a picture of my mom's biological father when he worked as a motorcycle police officer in Indianapolis sometime after he came home from WWII. You should be able to click the image for a larger version.

I'm planning to print this onto canvas as a Christmas gift for my mom, and I wanted to include some text with his name, the department, the motorcycle, etc.

FYI, the image is a scan of a black and white 8x10 photo. I colorized it using the My Heritage "deep learning" AI tool, so the colors of details on the bike may not necessarily be accurate. However, I was pretty impressed with the results. It rendered his pants navy blue and his uniform shirt light blue, which would seem to be accurate. And the color of the bricks on the building behind him certainly seems reasonable. Something in the coloring of the bushes looks a bit suspect to me, but all in all I was very impressed. It was basically a one-click operation to colorize it. But here's how the photo originally looked:

I wish I had some backstory for the photo, but unfortunately we don't have any details. My mother grew up with a step-father, and only has memories of her biological father as a little girl when he would come visit her, usually while working. He died in 1959 at the age of 42, so she did not really get a chance to know him. She recently connected with a half-sister she did not grow up with, and she was able to borrow this photo long enough to scan it.

The photo looks staged to me, possibly with off-camera lighting, so I wonder if it was something for a newspaper, or some kind of official department photo op. And the 8x10 has a lot of detail, so I'm guessing it was taken with a decent camera.

I've been gone from the forums ever since my beloved K-30 died of congenital aperture block disease, but I posted in a thread last night, and the images that I linked to on my private server space did not show up in the thread like they used to. Instead, where the image should be, there is just a hyperlink that says "Click here to view photo". And yet looking at other recent threads, I see people are still able to post photos in-line. What gives? :(

Considering a 43" 4k TV as a monitor

Lol, not that I disagree in the least, but I actually do have some idea:

That's a 65" Vizio M series behind my "little" Dell 30".

My Vizio started having a problem recently with occasionally flashing a black screen, so I took the opportunity to replace our living room TV. In the meantime, I discovered that our Vizio could probably be repaired by replacing the main board. My wife didn't like the Vizio sitting around on the floor, so partly to get it out of the way, and partly out of curiosity, I stuck it on my computer desk just to see what it's like.

And it's overwhelming...sometimes in a good way, sometimes in a bad way.

Anyway, it's obviously way too big to work on, since you have to crane your neck to see the top of the screen, but I think that a 43" mounted flush on the wall and as far down as possible might work. When sitting in my normal working position, my eyes would be about 3' away from the 43" screen with it mounted on the wall. With my 30" monitor on its stand, my eyes are usually about 22" away from the screen.

PS. How come the images I inserted, hosted on my own site, don't show up, and instead have to be clicked on to view? I haven't posted on the site in a while, but it used to not be like that.

Considering a 43" 4k TV as a monitor

For the last several years I've been using a high-end 2011 model 30" Dell U3011 for my main computer. It runs a very useful 2560x1600 16:10 resolution, but it was close to $1500 at introduction and is capable of a 10-bit workflow, so it's probably been overkill for me as a hobbyist, but I got a really good deal on it since it had a small scratch on the screen.

Anyway, I've been wanting to upgrade to a larger, 4k screen since I also use my computer for gaming and some TV viewing. A 43" would be the largest I could go for my desk and my viewing distance.

Is anybody running a 43" TV as a computer monitor? I'm wondering if there are any models that would work well for photo editing. I know that TV's are a slightly different beast than dedicated computer monitors, and some features that make a great TV can interfere with accuracy as a monitor, so I wonder if anybody has experience in this regard.

I've been trying to use rtings.com as a guide, but they rarely review the smaller variants of model lineups, so their results cannot always be extrapolated. In fact most professional review sites tend to review the mid-size models, so it's hard to find much first-hand information on the smaller sizes.

Thanks!

This thread is giving me PTSD. As much as I loved my Pentax cameras, this is one aspect of DSLR's I do NOT miss now that I've mostly transitioned to m43 and Sony.

I could deal with adjusting lenses on my own cameras, but I was always afraid that when I sold a lens, the new buyer would complain about front/back focus issues. And if they filed a complaint with eBay and/or PayPal, you would probably be forced to take a perfectly good lens back, and paying the return-shipping in the deal. I actually ran into this with a Sigma 100-300mm f4 that I sold. The original owner had used it without issues, and I had used it for years with great results on two bodies. But my buyer claimed focus adjustment issues. After I was forced to take it back, I resold it and my new buyer was delighted with the lens.

Anyway, didn't mean to rant, and I still miss a lot of things about my Pentax cameras. I just wish they had found a way to be successful in mirrorless.

Item for Sale
Sigma 50-150mm F2.8 II APO EX DC lens for Pentax w/extended warranty

Asking Price
399.00 USD

Item Location
Indianapolis, IN (United States)

Item Description
I have switched to Sony, so I regretfully I must part with one of my favorite K-mount lenses, the Sigma 50-150mm F2.8. Parting with this lens is rather painful, since Sony currently does not have a similar lens, and certainly nothing near this price. This has been an extremely convenient lens for my daughters' performing arts such as ballet and gymnastics. It's an almost ideal combination of size, range, and speed for indoor activities. This lens is Made in Japan, and is very similar to the Pentax 50-135mm f/2.8 in size and image quality, but with faster autofocus and a little more reach.

I purchased the lens new from B&H in December of 2010 for $749. As a high-end "EX" lens it had a 4-year manufacturer's warranty from Sigma, which I supplemented with a 7-year Mack Camera extended warranty, so it is covered through 2021! The Mack Camera warranty is transferable with a $20 fee, and more information can be found here:

The lens comes in its original box with all accessories and paperwork. I will also include the original B&H receipt as well as paperwork for the Mack Camera warranty.

The lens is priced to sell since my girls have recitals coming up soon and I need to raise cash for a pricey Sony telephoto!

As with all the DSLR lenses I have sold, I will not accept returns for focus-calibration issues. I've used the lens with great results on two Pentax bodies, so I know the lens is good. I only add this disclaimer because there are some people who do not understand the potential lens/body calibration issues inherent in DSLR cameras, and that lenses sometimes need calibrated to certain bodies.

Possible to trigger Metz 48 AF-1 optically?

I recently bought a used Metz 48 AF-1 and I want to use it in a studio setting as an off-camera, manually-set dumb flash that is triggered optically when other flashes go off, but I can't figure it out. I have no trouble doing this with my YN560-II. Anybody know if this is possible?

Thanks!

Worth upgrading from K200D?

The K-30/K-50 is an amazing camera, and would be miles above the k200d in most ways, but the aperture control block issue is certainly something to consider if shopping used.

I was still loving my old K-30 up until about a year ago when it started suffering from the issue. Now if I haven't used it for a while, I will have to fire off several black or nearly-black shots before it works normally. The death of my K-30 is kind of what gave me my last push to transition completely to mirrorless.

In fairness to my K-30 though, the shutter count was probably somewhere around 60,000 when it started acting up. Hard to complain about that kind of longevity from a camera that competed in the budget DSLR segment. My K-30's crystal-white finish, BTW, still looks almost like new and has held up marvelously. I was sad when they went away from the glossy/metallic finishes and lost some of the sharp and aggressive edges for the K-50 refresh.

Sensors have improved quite a bit since your 200D was released. Even my tiny Panasonic LX10 with a 1" sensor scores higher than the K200D on the DxOMark sensor tests. The short answer is yes, the K-70 would be a big upgrade from your K200D.

Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX portrait/telephoto lens for Pentax K-mount

Asking Price
490.00 USD

Item Location
Indianapolis, IN (United States)

Item Description
Now that I've transitioned over to m43 and Sony, I am now reluctantly selling my all-time favorite lens, the Sigma 85mm f/1.4. This lens has always amazed me with its sharpness and with the gorgeous pictures it produces. I am the original owner, and it will come in its original box with all its accessories. This is a terrific FF compatible lens that is no longer being made for Pentax.

I'm asking $490 shipped, and I believe I'm pricing it below market value, as I'm hoping for a quick sell so that I can use the money to buy a camera as Christmas present for my 12-yoa daughter who has recently started to show an interest in photography. To that end, I may be open to trades for a good beginner camera body. I want something with a viewfinder and good manual controls, such as an Olympus OMD or Panasonic GX series.
