I think that's what may have happened to me. I'm not sure what the aperture was at the time, just noticed that the number was red, and the ISO was 6400 (and red). I could still see a bit, but not enough for it to focus or take a pic. Really weird that it happened three times in a row. Something in that scene (baby pic) it didn't like. I wonder if this is a firmware bug.

Took the K-01 first time out today (received it a few days ago), with the Pentax 18-55 WR DA lens attached. Was doing fine till I got indoors. Suddenly it would think there was no light in the room, maxing it's iso and aperture settings and unable to take a pic. To my horror, this happened right when I needed to take some important pics that people were posing for. Turning the camera off then on would reset it for one pic, then the next it would crap out again. This happened three times, to make sure I missed the important shots. Then it went back to working as expected. It was a complete WTF moment. Anyone experience something like this before?
And just to note, after that, was using it all day and nothing like that happened. Could the lens hood have messed with it? The lighting was regular indoor lighting,,,

Sounds awesome. I have a similar story, I actually ordered the K30 and the K-01 dropped in price that day, so I canceled my K30 order on amazon and grabbed the K01 kit from Adorama. Still waiting to receive it since I'm getting it through my dad as prices have not dropped where I'm currently residing.
Kudos to having tons of fun with yours, it should be a welcome upgrade to my K2000 then. :)

I stand corrected. There was an earlier post saying it was missing that. That does change things somewhat. :)

You forget the negatives, no Tv and Av modes. - Video? Sure, but I have another camera for video...
- K-01 is smaller, but not by much: Compare camera dimensions side by side
- Cheaper, but no Tv, Av, EVF. That's worth $200 to me. So not 'really' cheaper. K-5 is $979 (google it. Xmas sales were around that price too).
- I don't care about MF in a camera with no Tv, Av, or EVF. Seriously? I swapped the focusing screen on my k2000 to better MF. Would I do the same to a K-5 or K-01? Nope.
Seems like a make or break list. Looks kind of like a neutered K-5 by specs. Don't want to be a hater, but the price point and difference between the K-5 seem negligible....

and I'm thinking why should I spend $800 for this, when the K-5 is almost the same price (especially with last xmas deals).
Seriously, with the price being nearly identical to the K-5, why would anyone want this over a K-5?

Went to Kuala Lumpur on my way to Kuching (coming from the States). Figured I'd be seeing tons of Pentax...
Boy was I wrong.. every brand is here, except Pentax. One shop even had a Pentax signage inside that they attempted to cover up.
I was told Singapore was a good place to get Pentax gear, but it seems that Pentax is dead to Malaysia (at least West Malaysia).
Very frustrating. Why the heck isn't Pentax all over Asia?

I sometimes make an appearance in Kuching with my K2000. I could not find a single Camera shop in Kuching or KL selling Pentax equipment. It's all Canikon, and some Sony(?!?).
Have you found a place selling any Pentax equipment?

Well, with the abundance of Russian pentax, I mean k mount glass on ebay, it's not surprising. :)

Well, speed-wise is not a big deal, they're backwards compatible.
But I see your point with the older models not doing video. Granted, I wouldn't want to shove 1 or 2TB into my camera, but putting in say 64 or 128GB is definitely something to consider. Especially if shooting all raw and out in the field for a length of time.

I couldn't find a related post, so I figured I'd ask. With the release of new firmware for newer models supporting SDXC, when will be see this for older cameras (if ever). I'd like to be eventually able to use an SDXC card in my k-m.
Alternatively, I've heard you can re-format an SDXC card as fat and use that. That may work for the new 64gb card, but definitely will be a waster for larger sizes..

I would go for the UCII. I bought a UC for something like $1 off of ebay. It's wobbly, and sad to say, it's now one of my best lenses. Considering my 'best' lens cost $12, that's really not saying much.

I believe you're wrong, I'm looking at my UC right now and it doesn't have the power pins for zoom.
Here's a description of the minolta one from B&H: Used Sigma Zoom Telephoto 70-210mm f/4-5.6 UC Manual 778005 -
Also, the one I have, I bought for $1 off ebay. It's crossed my mind that the electronics could be busted, as it doesn't even register it's focal length with the camera, but there's definitely no way this thing is autofocus.

I'd like to thank everyone for helping me out with the focusing screen & shims.
In a strange turn of events, after I had bought some metallic 3M tape and sat down to slap it on the D shim, it still did not work. In frustration, I reversed the focusing screen (tab is now on the left side when you face the camera), shim 'B' worked with this setup, and it's perfect. How weird is that?

Do you know where I can get professional calibration? I purchased the shim set from Pentax and apparently, my focusing screen is some weird odd number. The closest shim is the 'D' shim, but it's still 2-3mm off. It's been frustrating me almost to the point of just forgetting all about using a split screen. The ebay seller I got it from is also a retard when it comes to support. So I'm thinking of getting a second one from another vendor. Can anyone recommend on that worked well for them? Preferably for a K2000?
Thanks!

There's some wisdom to not messing with it if you don't have to. These cameras are pretty much precision instruments. Since I used metal tweezers to open the focusing screen holder, I ended up scratching the tab some, and getting fine metallic dust on the mirror/focusing screen. I've cleaned it up, but that kind of dust can fry circuits. You just have to be very careful (probably more careful then I was, as I almost dropped the shim into the pentaprism too). That's what happens when trying various shim about 20 times... Hopefully the shims I ordered will just fit.

After wasting time on calling every camera store within a 25 mile radius, I called Pentax. 6 x $.72 + $8 (S&H) = $12.32, shipping out today and should arrive in 4 days. Booya! Hopefully they'll work. :)

I spent a number of hours this past Saturday cutting up paper shims of various sizes. I've come to the conclusion that I'm better off ordering the parts. One store though told me there's a lead time of 8-10 weeks, so if I don't find a local store carrying them I'll order them direct from Pentax myself.

Definitely helps. I used to shoot with an old film Minolta, it was all manual. I had forgotten the pleasures of a split screen. It makes focusing a lot easier, and most of my lenses are manual.

Yeah, it's got the alignment tab. Is the number on that tab of any significance?
Just to make sure, that tab is supposed to be on the top righthand corner when facing your camera, right? :)
