I am still wondering how long it will take for the myth of an upcoming Pentax FF to finally die.

Will someone start a rumor about it for Photokina 2020 or will the idea of Pentax never introducing such a camera become clearer by that time...?

Do a test:

Only pop up in PentaxForum rumor section once a year and you'll see that you will be able to pick up the conversation at exactly the same point where you left it a year ago... or the year before that...

Seriously... a Pentax FF at next Photokina? No kidding!

Hey, who needs AF with such a small sensor?

Give me a good hyperfocal mode and I'm done!

The SD1 body doesn't even remotely look like a "customized K7" as can be seen on all the previews around the web... are you sur you want to bet on Pentax producing it?

Samsung NX Getting More Serious

Did I understand right that these zooms have been designed to keep their focus even when zooming in/out?

I thought it was very difficult design zooms this way (I forgot the technical name for it)...

They are being serious about it at least.

I think they might have a good shot at this market if they managed to get their camera/lenses side by side with the other guys in shops but, so far, they seem to have some difficulties with their distribution network.

Maybe they are waiting to have a decent range (end of 2011?) before pumping the volume up...

Samsung NX Getting More Serious

I have the NX10 +20 & 30mm pancake and all I can say is that, so far, I am puzzled by the quality of the glass Samsung is putting out.

These are small, well made, affordable AND of excellent optical quality.

If the 16mm is of the same wood, I'll buy it as soon as it is out.

I'll also buy the 85f1.4, even if it's bigger (whos say's that Samsung doesn't have a beefier, more upscale model coming to go with these lenses?). The NX10 will make for an excellent portrait camera with it's very precise and versatile AF.

700mm? For the life of me I can't even imagine the look of it with a NX attached! :D

They should just sell it with a NX as rear cap!

Done that already! ;)

I think they are on the right way with this camera and lens roadmap but I also think that Pentax could do it much better!

Samsung has learned a lot from Pentax but they didn't understand everything... suffice to look at their implementation of the green button... yes, it's there but no, it's not useful. They only use it as a "reset" button.

Whatever they do, just include a high quality EVF, two dials (one close to shutter button, one on the back, concentric to the directional pad), keep the general Pentax ergonomics, green button and all, and begin to bring a few high quality large aperture (f2 or larger) compact primes (think 24f2, 16f2.4, 40f2 and 85f1.4).

Please, no P&S without EVF ala Sony.

If you are into zooms, the ones you have are pretty much top notch but could benefit from being used on FF IMO. If you're not into video and aren't afraid of a pretty "crude" camera by todays standards, why not get a used 5D (MkI) and see if you like it?

On the other hand, if you'd want to get a smaller kit by using essentially primes and a compact body, the K-5 (or even K-x/r) with a 3 primes kit (21/40/70 or 15/40/200 if you want more "spread") would get my vote.

If you don't really know if using primes would be your cup of tea, try shooting with your 24-105 set to a single focal for a while and see if you like it.

As far as IQ goes for quality family and vacation shots, you can't go wrong with any of the cameras you're looking at.

Expect $200 rebates on 5DMkII bodies before june 2011 if the 5DIII is coming in fall 2011.

The other solution is to go 5D (MkI) and find yourself a nice unit for under $1000.

A pair of f4 L zooms and a few primes (50f14 or 85f1.8) and you're all set.

If you're in the US, I'd shop at keh and get everything 2nd hand.

Zeiss to stop ZK lenses for Pentax

Understandable.

Zeiss lenses are not that attractive to Pentax user since they are made for FF and sales must have been confidential.

On the other hand, Canon and Nikon now have a strong base of FF users and it seems logical that Zeiss want to concentrate their relatively low production volumes on them.

K-5 AF Speed on Youtube (compared to K-7)

Yes, this is perhaps the silliest "AF" test I have ever seen.

Let's wait and see a proper outdoor test with someting actually moving and not some random shots where the camera refocuses on whatever. :hmm:

The camera looks awesome and Pentax has always refined their AF from camera to camera so I expect the K-5 to be an excellent performer... but this "test" doesn't show anything.

Is K5 really only 11 AF points ?

As a current Canon/Pentax user, I have to concur with what you just wrote to some extent.

It seems that AF shear speed is greatly a function of the lens/AF mechanism when used in "single shot" mode.

For example, my FA135f2.8 focused as fast on my K10 than my 70-200f4L on my 5D (and the 135 has a min focusing distance of 0.7m!).

But the 70-200L smokes the DA*50-135 for example so YMMV.

Same could be said about FA35f2 AF speed against EF 35f2... no AF speed difference to be found. Same again when comparing FA 50f1.4 to EF 50f1.4: speed is about the same.

When it comes to tracking moving targets or focus in low light, however, I always reach for the Canon... no contest here.

As for K-7 being "unusable" above ISO 800... people saying that just never print obviously.

If this lens is in the same category as the 85 and 14 (ie good optically although not stellar), I will give it a try on my 5D and K10.

Hopefully it will be decent in the center wide open.

The price tag puts it firmly against D300s/7D (at least when they were selling at list price) instead of D90(D7000?)/60D: the AF system has better be a completely new one with similar performances to what C&N already offer.

Sounds interesting but I still have my doubts about Pentax know-how on AF predicitve tracking algorithms.

* Not only quieter AF but considerably faster also.
* AF limiter (very handy for non-macro uses).
* Internal focus (size difference is VERY relative if you consider the way the Pentax extends at closer range).

I'd call that a draw. As for the "consumer plastics" vs "metal" please show me the impact this has, other than cosmetic, on photography... I didn't hear anyone complain about "consumer plastics" when the D-FA lens was the only choice we had.
