Neweer 3-way geared tripod head review

Hi All!

In preparation for the eclipse of April 8th, I decided to get a 3-way geared head as even thought I have a very good ball head (vanguard Alta BH-250), I do really hate the millimetric drop that happens just right after you let go your camera after you tight the ball head bolts. And knowing that for the eclipse I would need to constantly adjust the camera position, I decided to invest in a 3-way geared head and found that recently, Neweer has added a new head to their catalog for a very affordable price ($109 USD @amazon), so I did my research and found just a couple of reviews videos one of them complaining that the bolts may become harder to turn, and although they do, I found that it's not that hard that you have to put a lot of force to keep turning them, it just get harder that the "normal" but not hard that you can't turn it anymore.

So during the eclipse, I didn't experience any issue with its functionality, and it made the whole process a really enjoyable experience to me. Not a single unwanted drop, very sturdy carrying my gear (Pentax K-1 mark II, Tamron 2X TC, Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 with its hood and an ND Filter), and very smooth adjusting process during all the event, so all in all, I'm very happy with this gear and I do recommend it to get it.

I did see that there are other brands with very good reviews for twice/trice the price of the Neweer brand, so in my short experience, this Neweer 3-way geared head is worth its price. Now I just need to see how well it holds its smooth functionality as I already saw that Benro's and Manfroto's 3-way heads eventually fails after 2-3 years, let's hope this one match that time frame at least.

I added one shot I took from my gear during the eclipse, and yes, I know, I mistakenly supported the whole gear on the camera plate instead of the lens baseplate, and I did notice when I took this photo, but considering the camera position, I decided to take the risk to leave it like that.

I hope this review serves to anyone looking information on this 3-way geared head. I can answer questions if you have any.

So finally had the time to review and edit my eclipse photos. I thought I missed the totality, but I did manage to have one shot, sadly with an ISO of 128000 there's a lot of noice so not the best quality, but hey, I got the shot and I'm happy with my composition. I used my Innorel HT248C tripod with the Neweer 3-way geared tripod head, my K-1 II with a Tamron 2X TC and the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8, and used with an ND 100,000 for the whole event.

I finally arrived home, I think I will have a chance to develop my shots on the weekend. Sadly I know that I missed the shots of the totality as I forgot to take of the ND filter (yeah! I know!), but I did enjoy watching my kids and wife's reactions. The weather that morning at Addison was a totally closed sky with thick clouds, and as if God was having mercy to me, around 11:15 am the sky started to open, and by 11:43, it was almost clear, so we could watch it completely from start to finish without clouds interfering. I will share my shots -if there's something good - later on the weekend.

Amazing shot! I was at a kids park in Addison, TX, with very few people wanting to see it, I was the only photographer, and the rest of the people were wandering around until about the start of the totality, and as soon as it finished, everybody left the park hehehe.

TriLens: does anybody use it?

Well, last week I used the trilens with my Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8, the Sigma 85mm f/1.4, and my Pentax 24-70mm f/2.8 for taking shots at a sporting event at my kid's school and let me tell you that it worked perfectly to me. I really enjoyed and found it very practical to use. Not a single issue with it and I can tell you it is very comfortable to use. I left my backpack with my wife, asked for permission to get on the field and take some shots, and I did have a lot of fun. interchanging lenses constantly, working with the 24-70 when de action was really near to where I was standing, changing to the 70-200mm when the action was on the other side of the field, and the 85mm to get some face reactions of the players. all without having to carry my lenses on the backpack (and the backpack on my shoulders) and having to take of and on the backpack every single time.

I was really surprised with how well the weight balanced on my belt, even when the 70-200mm was on the trilens. I did take my precautions by running some jumping tests the day before over my bed to see if the lenses would move or disengage from the trilens mount, and nope, they stayed very well mounted, not even a slight movement that would make me think my lens would fall.

Tomorrow I have another sporting event at the school, just this time is for my little one, and this time I know they (the school´s teachers) won't allow me the VIP permit as the kids (3-5 yo's) get easily distracted, so tomorrow I will have to shot from the Gym's steps with the 70-200mm all the time, so no trilens to play with.

All in all, I just have used it twice and I can tell you I'm happy with it. Would I've paid its full price now that I've trayed? Must probably yes, especially when just a week before I received the trilnes on the mail, I had a family reunion where I did struggle changing lenses (between the Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8-4 and the Sigma 85mm f/1.4) because my flash broke when it fall to the ground when I has packaging my camera, so those where my only fast lenses for the night and I had to change lenses constantly and going back to my bag every time was a burden for the night, something I would totally avoid if I would have the trilens already. Now at half its rice, without doubt, I can really recommend it.

Finally today I was able to upload some shots to my flickr, and since I wasn't able to take a daily shot, and avoiding triggering my OCD, I will not post on the daily challenge group the past days shots, as I cannot stand the days not following its natural order hehehehe. Maybe one, two, or event three "jumps" it's ok, but mine would be almost 2 weeks old and not even sequential, so no, I will not post them.

I did have a series of small windows to enjoy your shots, but not enough time to comment on them, I will try to catch up this week.

And this was my favorite shot in all this time away from the forum.

I'm in too. This month I will be very busy because of a couple of new projects, but I will try as hard as I can to fulfill the challenge as MoNovember. In all honesty, I think this will be harder because of the dull days that we normally have on November here in Monterrey, but I will find the way to see the world in B&W.

Today I had this issue for the first time. I followed your advice and it worked perfectly! Hope this is an issue Ricoh solves in their next updates, and if it's a hardware issue, then they better give an extended warranty for all of us affected.

Just posted my shots from the 5th to the 9th of October. Sorry for the delay, but I didn't bring my computer for my anniversary getaway avoiding any distraction with editing during the celebration, and avoiding any disagreement with my better half, you all know the saying, happy wife, happy husband.

Mylio Photo Catalogging Software

I use iMatch, which is for windows only, but it is not for images only, but for your entire windows library. It does have many of the features that Mylio and more. iMatch it allows you to edit directly in affinity photo or any other editing software, and also, gives you the power to compare up to 10 images at the same time, but the most powerful feature to me, is that it links parent-to-son files, meaning that if you have a DNG photo, and you edited and export it to a JPG file, somehow iMatch links them, so if you try to move your photo from one folder to another, it tells you that you have a linked file behind.

It is a very powerful tool, but it does takes a lot of time to learn it and use it to its full potential, I'm certain that I only use it maybe at 1/10 of its potential right now. Oh, and is a onetime fee purchase with an outstanding support from its developer.

On a side note, I found it funny that the word "lio" in Spanish means "problem", so "mylio" is "myproblem" in Spanish, hehehe.

Hi, I just noticed that the eyepiece is different from the one in my camera, did your camera come with that eyepiece, or did you get that one from somewhere else? and if so, can you share with me where did you get it, please? I like it does protrude a little bit farther than my eyepiece. Thank you and good luck with your sale!

That was a rude comment.

But if you look at the deck's floor, you can cleary see it's complety wet, also, is you look at the water, you can see it has rain markings as well. More often than not, it's very difficult to "see" the rain on a shot, specially when there's not so much contrast in the background, just like in this example.

I know, but thanks to affinity's lack of it, I discovered iMatch, and now I use it at 10% of its potential and I'm already more than happy with it, I really recommend it, much better than ligthroom dam and even windows explorer IMO.
