Keep in mind though, having a faster lens and using it wide open will give you paper thin DOF, which is typically something you'd only want for close detail shots and some portraits.
As for the tidbit about using slower shutter speed and a tripod, that will only work well if your subject is very very still, otherwise you will see motion blur.
Since you have the k-x, which fairs well with relatively hi ISO shots, just make sure you shoot in RAW and you should be able to take care of most issues in post-processing.

If you're just helping him as a second shooter, just for this one wedding, then I would suggest renting a lens rather than buying. You can rent all the nice glass you want, for a few days for the wedding and still keep cost to a minimum. the folks over at CameraLensRentals.com - Canon, Nikon and Pentax Lens Rentals. are great.
At a minimum, I'd recommend trying to rent the DA*16-50, DA* 50-135 orthe sigma equivalents (EX 24-70, EX70-200).
Just my 2 cents.

Wow.. I was bit late on this too.
I just brought in a K10D with the body cap on and the 77 LTD in it's pouch in the wife's handbag... that passsed muster no problem at an Aerosmith Concert :)

There is one other major difference between the HSM and the non-HSM version... and that would be the IF, Internal Focusing..and the size. It weighs the same as the non-HSM, but is only 3.5in long, where as the non-HSM is 5" not extended and is 6+" fully extended.
This would be benefical and make life easier if you're shooting with polarizers or graduated filters..
Then question is.. how much is quietness/HSM, size and internal focusing worth to you? as it is an extra 4-500 bucks for those features.

You should be able to set up your strobes post ceremony for the still shots as well as during the reception, if you're not planning on moving them much. As for lenses, for most of weddings, I've tried 3 different combos on 2 bodies, it'll depend on the types of shots you're going for. I tried to be "hidden" for the most part.
Combo 1: DA 12-24 and DA*50-135
Combo 2: DA 14 and DA*50-135
Combo 3: DA-12-24 and FA 77 LTD
Combo 2 worked the best for me when running around trying to get a lot of shots in. When it was time for the set/still pieces, then you have a little more time to switch out lenses as necessary.
Some other tips I found useful for wedding shoots in addition to what everyone said so far:
1) If you can have a 2nd shooter/assistant that can help do the more risque/creative stuff that you can play around with later. As for an assistant, they can be helpful to hold strobes/reflectors or position people for the group shots.
2) If they have big families, ask the bride and groom to "appoint" one of their family members from each side to help gather the key people from each side. It help move things along quickly!
3) Ask in advanced if there are any key shots the bridge and/or groom would like, some will have this pre-defined notion of what they want, or if there is a special cultural traditional moment that they want captured.
