As I was sitting here reading this my boy cat Loki raced down the hall towards me, skidded to about 2 feet from my desk chair, abruptly jumped straight up and right over me, about 4 feet up, VERY narrowly missing my nose with his back claws, and then landed on the low bookcase about two feet to the side of me where he then proceeded to sit down, lick a leg and innocently look up at me as if to say "What?"

Siamese cats should come with warning labels I swear....:P

Well, actually that's why I have more than one DSLR, because I can't really have one crapping out on me and ending a shoot. But I have more cameras than just my DSLR's. I have more film bodies than anything because I end up getting them with lenses I want and sometimes people just give them to me to pass on or keep as I like. But I do also arguably have at least 3 digital cameras that are totally gratuitous in terms of my job. Two little M43 cameras and a Q, and no, I am not rich. I just happen to have a mentor who is pretty much with the most severe case of CBA/LBA ever. A man who loves passing on cameras he's not into anymore to people he's taught. Seriously he has a whole climate controlled room in his apartment that is probably as big as my master bedroom and my living room combined filled with cameras, lenses etc. It's his own personal ever changing camera museum. I keep begging him to let me take some pics of it but he always says "Nope. Not till I am dead..."

At what point you start signing your work?

I sign anything I deem important, make it a very small, and hopefully unprintable file, and triple watermark it. My info is in my EXIF anyway, but that can be erased far more easily than a watermark or 3 in the right places. Though of course that can be done too, if you are determined.

I've had two thefts of my photos. I don't take chances with anything I might sell now. I don't even have a website online yet because I've seen the sites of two photographer friends lifted, copied and claimed by someone else as theirs and I'm not crazy about that happening to me. Right now I want to keep my business p/t anyhow and an online site would probably make for more work than I could handle with other commitments I have in my life.

Most of my work comes from word of mouth and local advertisements I sometimes run. I like the personal touch. I like to sit down with each client, show them my digital book that I made and talk about what they want. I do have a website ready to go, on my laptop to show people if they want a more in depth look at what I do, but so far I have not put that online. It's been a major quandary for me this situation but right now that's what works in terms of the business I can handle. I have some stock stuff up too, but I haven't made a whole lot that way.

That other too sexy thread got closed so I won't go there except to use this quote to start this one. It rather amused me in context and made me wonder just how many camera bodies some of you all actually have. I'm not talking just main bodies that you all use all the time. We all talk about how many lenses we have but what about bodies? Come on, fess up what's the actual body count?

"I'm actually more curious to know how many cameras a person has had instead." --- 6BQ5

I am admittedly a total camera slut. In the course of acquiring lenses I've probably given away 30 or 40 (mostly film) bodies I didn't want and I still have at least 35 currently in the house. Some work, some don't. I probably use about half pretty regularly, but I admit it, I'm a hoarder though I do purge once in a while...:o

Most of the people I knew living in big cities I would say this was a very conservative number or that some people were dead lying. :P Not so much here. Most of the people I knew from here, as kids, they're pretty conservative about sex and have had far less than the average I'd say. I'm well below this number actually, but then I'm a bit conservative when it comes to sex. When it comes to casual sex I'm really just not into it and I've only been in one LTR. My "total" is so low no one really believes me when I say how many. Particularly when they realize it's not because I was married young and for half my life like some people are or am ultra religious because I am not. I think some people downgrade their number to look better but maybe not as often as you might think.

Immaculate doesn't even begin to cover it. Near perfect case and strap leathers, near perfect lens case and lenses. NO dust at ALL on the equipment or in the lenses, not that my eye can see anyway. The 50 is a bit golden but it's not bad at all. The 35 is PERFECT, looks new to my eyes. The Spottie has a couple of really tiny paint chips, but otherwise looks brand new, VF is super clear and it works like it's band new too. This is easily the nicest SP kit I've seen in ages. This was a total steal. This is a $200 "near mint" kit. What it was doing at GW I will never know, estate thing I'd guess maybe? Regardless, I'm pretty sure that for the last 50 years it's been sitting in some guy's closet and he probably never used it but once or twice maybe. :P

If you really want to fight zombies you don't need a chainsaw. All you need is a big thing of salt to throw at them and something to light them on fire, like a torch. Salt immobilizes traditional zombies. Unless you have virus zombies they're done the moment you hit them with some. If they're virus zombies you're doomed even if you do torch them because they are carriers. Either way a good torch, preferably a blow torch, and they're gone. You can decapitate them but that doesn't always work very well as the bodies can keep on moving sans the heads for a while. Burning them right up, much better. :P

When I think of the times over the years that I've had to uninstall a security update and repair my system via system restore or even reload it completely because Microsoft effed it up and caused my machines to totally glitch I do NOT approve of this. You should be able to disable automatic updates so you can look them up for problems first. This is just crazy.

Konica T3 Kit, You All Have Got To See This...

Here's the bag, a bit better pics. I think there might be a leather shoulder strap tucked inside there too, or something, can't quite tell, but I kind of like the hippie strap as shoulder strap thing. That's an unusual pattern, one I have not seen, and it's in nice shape for something that old. Oh, and I like this woman. She's a very honest seller this lady. We mentioned seeing the same lot on Ebay for less? She refunded us the difference, $12, even though it was an Ebay thing and we bought it on Bonanza. Not too many sellers would do that, so I am duly impressed and I bookmarked her store for future reference. The whole kit was like $37 plus $9 to ship, very nicely priced indeed.

I'm told the bag might be earlier than the camera, likely late 50's or early 60's as the ones from later don't have quite as much Mayan tooling as this one does. Likely it's from a Mexican company called Flores and yes, it is hand tooled. Given the prices for pursed like these on Ebay and elsewhere I think this was a very lucky buy. I don't see too many camera bags like it. She's going to have to take very good care of this. It is genuinely antique at this point.

Ah ha, FOUND it. (I found more pics of the kit. They were selling it in a couple of places.) It's the Tokina Close Focus D Zoom 35-105, which pleases me to no end as that's a great companion for the 50 F1:7 lens which I am pretty sure that one is given it was usually the one sold on that camera. It looks like it. So not bad at all, and the case is probably Mexican leather actually, with a Mayan design. It's got a Mayan wheel on the back. It's pretty cool...

I still cannot quite figure out the longer lens. Nothing I'm running across looks quite like it. It's got to be a zoom, right? But the shape of it is off for most of the Konica zoom lenses I'm looking at on Ebay. It's an odd little lens that. Only one shorter, chubby little rubber ring, way at the bottom? What I am seeing in Konica zooms, most makes, almost all of them have a longer rubber ring or even more than one. I'm thinking it might be a Tokina or Vivitar for Konica mount, but I'll be darned if I can figure out which one. I don't think it's a Konica brand lens though...

---------- Post added 07-20-15 at 07:06 AM ----------

You know I can't help but look at this bag and not think a K1000 SE in brown wouldn't look great in there, much better than the Minolta TC. Yeah? I guess I could re-leather one of the K1000's I have for her in brown leather. I don't have an SE unfortunately but a leather change would work I guess too. This camera is cute but it just doesn't seem to fit that bag's look to me. I'm admittedly a bit of a purist though when it comes to stuff matching. This camera, needs a black case or a red one. The hippie case needs a brown leather camera...

This kit is actually going to one of the kids in my family if it works. We bought it for her because she saw it online and totally flipped over the vintage leather case and straps. I do think she rather likes the looks of the camera also, laugh, but it was definitely the accessories that got her. She loves anything 60's, 70's hippie. She's a total flower child this kid. I rather like it myself. It's a really nice bag and strap combo. I'm not too sure it's not handmade that bag. Looks like it might be real leather, made maybe on a reservation? I can't really tell from the pic but the design on it looks rather Native American to me.

In any case it was a definite find, I think. The TC isn't a bad camera from what I am reading. I don't know yet if that's the 50 or the 40mm but if it turns out to be the 50mm then I may hunt down a 40mm for her for Christmas. That's supposed to be a good almost pancake lens for this mount. I think it's the 50mm, but it could be the 40mm too. They often came as a kit lens with these. Looking at it, the long lens has to be the 80-200mm zoom or maybe the 28-135mm but I think the former is more likely. She has an E-PL1 though so if the body is a dud I could just get her a Konica/M43 adapter for them too. We'll see.

A Tough Decision

A sleeping bag/pillow set, a very large mosquito net, a Swiss army knife and sharpening stone kit, a magnifying glass, a first aid kit. You can use rocks for hammers and to make other tools like arrow heads, so no hatchet for me. I could make a bow and arrows, a spear, plates etc out of what I can find. Lighters and that they wear out. A magnifying glass to make fires with is more practical. A good Swiss army knife is an essential. I don't travel without one. The mosquito net would keep me from being eaten alive, very important if you want to avoid getting ill. Ditto a basic first aid kit as I am sure the creams and bandages in it would prove handy.

The first thing I'd do is find a good shelter spot out of the wind sans any major animals, big scary bugs, or bats. Five items really restricts me by two that I'd really want to have. If I could I'd also pack some duct tape and a box of lawn garbage bags, the heavy duty ones. They would come in handy for a lot of reasons. I could do without but I'd really want to have those if I could. If I had to though I'd still choose the mosquito net over the tarp/garbage bags. I can't stand bugs and a tarp won't keep them out by itself. A mosquito net can go over, under and around me, if necessary and I can always cut branches to wedge over me and to make a platform under me as a shelter to keep me and my sleeping bag mostly dry. A tarp would be handy but not nearly as much so as the rest. Every item you have in such a situation has to do more than one thing. If it doesn't it's not worth taking.

BC I could probably find some sort of vine or long grass to weave a mat for under the sleeping bag. Likely there are some wild fruits, nuts etc I could forage. (I'd be reading and memorizing a book on that before I left. I wouldn't take it with, and lose something else, but I'd definitely read it so I could forage sans accidentally killing myself.) I can make a pole and find bait for fishing and I can cut off part of the mosquito net to use for a scoop net. Foraging on the beaches would likely get me something metal to use as a grill or pot eventually and something plastic that's easy to catch water in, but in the meantime there's always sharp sticks and cooking in leaves, shells or grass and hopefully there will be a source of fresh water there somewhere or some rain if not. If I could find something to put it in and boil it in I could strain it with part of my netting make it safer to drink.

Eventually if I was going to be stuck there for long I'd make a proper tiny one room cabin of some kind out of rocks and other foraged materials. I could probably use sea bird's eggs and wet sand for making mortar for between. If I could find some limestone to crush and throw in that would even be better. The roof would be the hardest part, unless I could find something large and metal to act as a cover, but I guess I could figure it out somehow. Maybe make a wood frame, weave a thick mat and then put a thin layer of cement on top to dry, I dunno. A nice, dry cave would be great if I could find one, but it would probably be hard to find one inland not inhabited by some animals so likely that would be out as shelters go, unless I got extremely lucky and found one along the coast somewhere up well above the flood line where it's dry. If I did I'd sweep it out, make a door to keep animals out, hang up the mosquito netting and make that home.

I could manage to stay alive sans any encounters with big animals out to kill me for being on their turf or for dinner. I'd be a bit more worried about spiders and snakes. I'm sure BC has it's fair share of those. I'd be checking my shelter, sleeping bag every time for creepy crawly visitors. I'd have to find or make a good thick shelter by Winter though. There's no way I'd survive a BC Winter otherwise...

Yeah you do. It's too much fun. Having one AF zoom is cool and I would not give mine up, but do yourself a favor and find yourself a set of Auto 110 lenses and get the lens baby aperture discs to use in them. You will be VERY glad you did because it is the perfect combo. I was mulling this the other day what I'd take if I was going to Europe. At first I thought of the Q and the little lenses because of easy portability and the fun factor, but then I thought would it be useful enough and wondered if I should take an Oly E-P3 or a DSLR along too. I'm still torn about whether or not to do that, but after seeing this I'd definitely take my QS1/little lenses kit. Awesome series. One thing I particularly liked was the cat shots. That would so be me while on vacation too. I'd be walking around in one of the greatest cities in the world totally taking pics of the local cats, laugh. Most people go to Rome to see the Coliseum, the Vatican? I'm determined to go and see all their roaming cats, which I am told are EVERYWHERE. I want to take pics of cats sitting on the Roman ruins...:P

Chinon CM-3, which is not quite as nifty as my Gaffer, in that it has no mirror lock up, but I am not complaining because it looks a lot like the Gaffer, almost like a Chinon Memotron, and I don't use mirror lock up much anyway. It has the same funky shutter button which I just totally dig a lot. :) I got the CM-3, a 55 F1.7, a 28mm Sun Wide Auto, a 2x Tele-Converter, and what I believe is a set of M42 macro rings or something similar. All clean, I emailed and specifically asked them to check carefully for fungus before I even bid. They obligingly did and pronounced the kit very clean. I then won it for $18.88 plus a few $$$ to ship. Not too shabby. I'm really hoping it still works, but even if it doesn't I got my $$$ worth otherwise. My Gaf Memotron is one of my favorite M42 bodies. It's built like a tank and it's a lot of fun to use. I take it a long a lot as a backup to my SPII's when I am shooting film.

I'm kind of in love with these meatballs. I usually make my own sauce, but add these. Then I either do them with pasta or I make meatball subs, which is what I am doing now. I've never been much for packaged meatballs but I'm getting kind of addicted to these. I just wish I could find more than one kind around here, but unfortunately I can't. It's only the tomato sauced meatballs, beef. I'm told there are stores where you can walk up and buy all kinds of these meatballs in different sauces in like NYC and that. I'm jealous a bit I think. I think some of them sound really cool. The idea of Teriyaki ones for instance sounds good. Yeah, I could make my own, but these are way easier and I actually like them better than mine. I make really good meat sauce but meatballs are just too much work most of the time...

How many lenses do you have?

To be fair I've been collecting lenses for a decade and a half now and I've been very lucky at Goodwill. :o I do use my gear for work, not just for play. I have a bunch of kids I teach besides and most of the cheap stuff I use for teaching them. I'm not about to hand them my best lenses. A lot of the Ricoh type stuff, that comes and goes. When I've got a kid up to needing a film camera of their own I usually will outfit them with something halfway decent a K1000 or P3. Some kind of K mount body so they can share lenses. Some of them they manage to find digital bodies, older M43 or older DSLR's. They get adapters and a few cheap lenses. I also donate sometimes to my local colleges photography departments though I've not been doing as much of that lately because I'm teaching kids and any extra gear I acquire lately is going to them.

My one teacher he's big on giving back and into getting kids involved with photography. This is me basically doing what he did for me on a smaller scale. It started out as my nieces and a couple of their friends but now I'm actually teaching a whole pack of kids. I've also been chit chatting with the folks at a local community center about doing more classes for disadvantaged kids and about doing Photoshop training for those same kids and maybe some classes also for seniors. I've been asked but I'm not sure I am up to it on that scale. It's a big time commitment and there's no money for me involved. It's all volunteer. I like the idea of doing it but I think it would be too much for me at that level with having to work and all.

That's the thing with volunteering though. It nearly always snowballs and people always want more and more of your time. I don't mind it sometimes, but when it starts to cost me health-wise and cuts into my working hours and takes away from that I do have to put limits on it. I'm pretty happy with my little class but I keep getting asked if I will teach in different places and it's hard to say no sometimes. I'm admittedly a sucker for it when it's about cats and kids. The shelter I volunteer at is always after me for more hours and taking more photos there too. I could make a f/t out of it sometimes I think, the way they all want me, except there's no pay, sigh...

Pentax is going to lose me because of 4K

I'm not mad I'm just making a point, that DSLR's are not really made for doing more than quick video clips. It really doesn't matter so much if they have truly great video or not. A video camera is better because you can get decent video and not have to worry about your camera heating up too much. It's for a 2 minute clip. It's not so good for much more than that. People are trying to make DSLR's into video cams. They're pushing the technology in ways that aren't necessarily that great for their cameras. Like someone else said the sensor chips for video are prone towards overheating at the present time. That's not something I want to risk too much. I'd rather use a designated video cam that is made for that than risk my DSLR.

I can do stills from video cam too but they usually look a little crappy compared to stills from a still camera. Video from a video cam is much better in most cases than video from a DSLR and since video cams are now pretty cheap and very compact for hand held use it just makes more sense to get one and use that. I mean why use the still camera for doing video when a video cam can do it so much better? Why use the video cam for snaps when a still camera is so much better? I believe in using the right tool for the job that's all.

Bottom line Pentax isn't making video cameras. It's making digital cameras with some film capacity which is NOT the same thing. Pentax makes their cameras mainly for PHOTOGRAPHERS not for people doing video. Their video capacity is meant for occasional short filming for fun not for making epics. You want a video camera capable of really making movies than go buy a VIDEO camera. This is an argument I am really getting sick of, no offense, but I'm tired of seeing people moan and complain about Pentax DSLRs and that not being set up for doing major video. They're STILL cameras that just happen to be able to handle doing a quick video for You Tube or whatever. They're not meant for doing videos much beyond that and I think it's asking too much to try to use them that way.

Honestly I don't even know what 4K is and nor do I particularly care. I admittedly have yet to use the video capacity on any of my cameras. It's just a bonus thing that the cameras I own are capable of but that so far I haven't had much use for. Pentax cameras they're all about making PHOTOGRAPHS not movies. The fact that you can shoot a short film I suppose is cool if you're into that, but so long as I can do PHOTOS I don't care much if the cameras they make have video capacity. I've never understood why people are trying to make DSLR's into video cams. Shooting video all the time isn't particularly good for or with a DSLR. A video camera still makes more sense for this...

Capturing Couture has some longer straps and a lot of thinner straps. They're nice, sturdy straps, nice looking too most of them, with good metal findings. I usually adapt mine so they have metal hooks as well, but I do believe they have a rig that can extend them even more for bandoleer use. You might want to ask them. They're a small outfit and they might be able to custom a strap that's even longer for you or make one of their guitar straps into one if you'd prefer that.
