Thanks PenTed. I acquired thic TC with some other stuff so just thought I'd give it a go to see what a tc does, it is consistently soft and fuzzy from corner to corner. I would hope a more expensive unit would give a better result. I am trying to work out how I get closer to the moon when my max focal length is the 55-300, defiantly not with this thing!

t's pretty terrible what it does though, terrible in all the things, except tele conversion, which I don't need anyway :)

I have an M42 Asanuma auto tele converor 3x with a Takumar SMC 50mm f1.5. I need to manually input a focal length for M42 lenses on my Kx body. What focal lenght should I input? Is it just plain 3x, so 150mm, or is there something more.thanks

The Understanding Exposure book really helped me as a complete beginner, plain language explanations, but plenty of detail, and plenty of photo examples so you understand what he is talking about. Read your manual. Start in AV mode, have fun :)

DA 35mm Macro Limited lens is here, I really hope I like the 35 focal length more than the 28, because I need to give one of these lenses up, and it's not going to be the 35 ;)

I just bought a DA 35mm f2.8 limited Macro from the auction site, not a portrait lens, but not as wide as my 28mm and the macro looks brilliant, even if I don't find it a better length than my 28. a happy ending, squee

I bought a kx a couple of years ago, with the DA 18-55, thinking that would make me happy in camera land. Bahahaa
Within a week I picked up a DA 50-200 which is perfect for frame filling head shots, it has taken some of my favorite photos, so for classic portrait shots I am covered.
Next I got a SMC Takumar 50mm f1.4, :) found I was crap at manual focus and a moving target, so I got the auto version, FA 50 1.4, it's boring and too narrow for indoors, and can't get the family in the frame, so I bought a F 28mm f2.8 and it is my favourite lens.
All the raving about the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 sucked me in and I bought that, I don't enjoy using at all, it's big and ugly, and I feel rude pointing it at people, and when I put it on my camera for a while, that becomes a while when I no longer pick up my camera.
Umm, also a few other thrifted bits and pieces.
I have aquired lenses faster than skills. I have a collection of lenses, and I don't want to collect lenses ( well philosophically I don't, in actuality I seem to very much enjoy it, but enough!
It is a kinda sickness, I caught it from you people, you can't help me!
YES of course the 40 mm, I had forgotten about wanting that one too, thanks for the reminder ;)
I want to part with all these lenses except the 2 kit lenses and the manual 50mm f1.4 and the other lens, the one I am trying to decide on, will be my perfect all purpose prime. Yep.
I am looking for a prime to stick on my camera that I love using, that is fun, that makes me want to use my camera, that encourages me to improve my skills instead of just playing around changing lenses. I like small and light and inconspicuous, like the kx.
So 28, 35, or 40, but I am a bit worried I am going to end up with all three :) but if I am going to have 3 primes, I don't want them at 28, 35, 40 and 50!!! That's 4!!! Hahaha I am going away, please don't help me anymore lovely Pentax Forum people.

thanks Na Horuk, that is exactly what I was asking, although all the answers have been informative. I have a F 28mm f2.8 and I also have a 50mm, one is a bit hard on faces the other doesn't fit enough in the frame for my use, maybe 35mm is worth a try next.

thanks for the quick replies :) I understand a longer focal length is more flattering for portraits, and I have 50mm and a 50-200, but 50 is too long for my everyday use. What I am wondering is if there is going to be much more noticeable distortion from a 28mm prime that is not present from a 35mm when capturing a face at close distance. I know neither are normal portrait lengths, I want wide, but without too nuch distortion when I get close up to people. I have a 28mm and wondering if a 35 would give nicer close ups, while still wide enough to not needing to back away for everything else.

For head and shoulders portraits is there a lot of difference between 28mm and 35 as far as distortion. I know if I photograph my son at 18mm I cant recognise him :)

I am interested in the answer to this post. I have a Kx and want a Tamron 28-75 but I'm a bit scared to buy used or imported for this reason, but retail in Aus is $600:(

the 50-200mm was the second lens I bought for my Kx, it was advertised as a PENTAX-DA 1:4-5.6 50-200mm (Samsung)
I was a bit confused when bought it from the marketplace on this forum.
It is a Schneider-Kreuznach D-Xenon 50-200mm f/4-5.6 AF (2006-)
one lens badge says D-Xenon another says Samsung, the lens cap and hood and box all say Samsung. Iv'e had it a year, works great. Cheaper than the penax branded version.

I bought my K-x to get family shots, I have an old M42 50 1.4 which I love but (apart from me having isues with manual focus) I find it just too long to capture indoor shots of my 3 year old in action, in my small house. I just bought a F 28 2.8 from the marketplace. I need wide for kid shots. I might later find I also need a flash but first I want to be able to fit him in the frame without flattening myself in a corner against the wall. For me the 50 has been great for creative close ups but no good for catching the snaps of all the things he is doing.

The K-x is my first non P&S camera and I've had it about 5 months, so I'm just learning about photography, but as a begginer who wanted the camera to get great family shots I have been delighted. Can't say the shots I'm taking are "great photos" but I am very happy with what even i can get from this camera. I would highly reccomend it for you.
I bought the K-x to take photos of my 2.5 year old. I love it for all the reasons you have stated, price image quality, low light performance, shutter lag - with my p&s I just missed so many shots. With the DSLR I can take so many shots so quickly that I get some wonderful shots of my son, I know i would have otherwise missed. i know thats not very skillfull :o but it works for me when I want to get his expressions captured. I have also picked up the 'fast 50' everyone recomends, I got a SMC Takumar 50 1.4 and. I have been able to shoot some beautiful dreamy movie like video with it, much nicer than what my video camera can do, but it is manual focus so takes some practice. For kids indoor I think a wider lens would be more suitable than a 50mm. dgaies sugestion is a good one I think. I also got a cheap $100 AU 55-200 which is great for getting 'up close' to a toddler without disturbing what they are doing.
Oh and one more thing, this forum has been an amazing source of learning and support for me as a new camera user. Maybe there are similar places for the other brands but all other things being equal, I'd buy Pentax again just so I can come in here for help :)

I've only got 1 (kid) so far but it is so true, i am a complete novice but already love the photos I'm getting of my toddler, Pixie photo :o, you will never see me again.

Girl clumsy:cool:
lost the first bit of plastic on the floor, twice
2nd time it never was found,
cut a second piece, got it on,
then couldn't mount the adaptor to the lens:( so removed it
Made a third! a tiny bit shorter
struggle struggle tweezers, no tricks, but finally got it on
Bingo..took a few test shots of the cat and my feet and other interesting midnight subjects and posted my victory back here.
It was 1 HOUR from the time I posted I was off to do it, to posting I had done it!
I hope you are getting a laugh Lowell Goudge, I am sooo pleased with the result. thanks again, now I'm off to try and understand all the rest off the stuff brought up in this thread, thanks all.
