OK. Now there's a real test with 40 xs on a 5d mk3 from ricehigh. Does the corner look good enough to you? If it's normal to you, congratulations. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v313/RiceHigh/5Ds/40mm_Pancake/IMG_1039.jpg Look at the lower right corner. Notice that this is taken at about f5,6 (manually fixed aperture).
This is not acceptable for a modern lens. You are wrong, corner sharpness of an 85 1,2 @ 1,2 and 1,4 is not expected to be perfect. But a normal prime f2,8-5,6 should perform flawlessly. Again, you are wrong. It's too bad in the corners to be used on FF without cropping. And you'd need to crop down the image to about APS-C for the corners to be good. :-)
That ken rockwell test shows that the 85 1,2 got much better corners at 1,2 than the xs 40 got at f5,6... http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/images/85mm-f12/sharpness/12-corner-IMG_9498.jpg f1,2 in the right corner. :-)

It obviuously covers FF, but I think the corners shows that it's not optimized for FF. The crane images lower corners shows it's very soft in the corners wide open with some vingetting. I would not like to buy a FF lens with that poor corner performance, therefore I don't think it should be called a FF lens even if it's very nice except that. Is the M version showing the same phenomenon wide open?
Look at the 2nd last image, lower left corner. It should in focus more or less but it's distorted and blurry

Looks good! Thanks for the samples. A small crop and it's a perfect FF lens.
It obviously doesn't perform flawlessly in the corners wide open. I'd not call it a FF lens because of the corners (only wide open?), look at the image with the two children playing on that big ring, the lower left corner shows some problems.
Will this lens be sold separately?

Edit: how do I resize the images when I post them here? If I drag them smaller when editing it doesn't work? :l
So I was out with the A7 for the first time in daylight. Brought my FA 43 and my Super Takumar 24mm.
First is with the Takumar, really love the bokeh it produces, think it's f5,6. The takumar is really nice on FF, it's very sharp in the center, the extremes are not super, but who cares, the lens is incredible.
FA 43, f1.9 or f2.8, can't remember. The 43 produces such clear and nice images. The FF sensor brings this lens back to life - it's now a normal lens with more 3D and everything! :) |

Finally got what I've been wanting for years, a "Pentax" FF. This brings new life to the 43. The only problems is the functions, buttons and menus, the lack of anti shake that becomes a noticeable problem on a light camera like this, with my 5D mk1 it's just like it has anti shake because of the weight. But I don't regret buying this at all. It's amazing on higher ISO.
Will update with some pictures later, but it's hard to get a shot here this time a year. Only got a few hours of daylight and everything is dull outside. :)
Edit: I've got a feeling this thread will continue to grow a lot. :)
Btw, I bought this camera with the 28-70 OSS for about as much as I paid for my K-7 with 18-55 a few years ago, what a deal. |

So, most brands released nice things at Photokina and Pentax went there with a kit lens? And another promise of a future camera... Seriously :/

Hehe, bring the 8 element to the arctic circle in Sweden and see what happens... I only brought takumars without SMC, the worst mistake ever. :( Flare flare flare flare... Could not shoot in the direction of the sun...
Will show you an extreme flare the 8 element 50mm Takumar did to me! :) |

So I've been using the Preset 105 a lot today and I think I'm starting to love it. Much nicer FL on FF than on K-5 for me.

Agreed. Too expensive. Just a few years ago the FA 50 was the same price... Not impressed.
Sorry, I'm actually mad at this.
Why are people swallowing this bullshit? At around 100-150$ why not. In Sweden it's 2595kr that's 372.467 USD (with tax) for a fu***** entry level plastic lens.
Who want to pay 2595kr (372$) for the pentax lens when the Canon EF 50/1,8 II sells for 890kr (127$) with tax? This is bullshit. Sorry, but this is just bullshit. Let's pay 3 times the price just because it's pentax...
Luckily I got a SMC Takumar 55 1,8 for around 20$ today and going by how my non smc 55 performs, its probably going to beat the crap out of that overpriced plastic thing.

BTW. Semi off topic.
Is the FA limiteds getting discontinued?
No major reseller in Sweden has the FA 43. It's only found in two stores online, lowest price is shockingly 1500$. The FA 31 is 2000$+, it used to be around 1500.

Is any of your comparisons relevant? FF lenses should be used with FF cameras, putting them on aps-c is a compromise in every way.
How many of you have actually tested your glass on both APS-C and FF?
The EOS 5D gave my Takumars new life. I can now use them as they are ment to be used, putting them on aps-c again is not going to happen. After using 5d the k-5 viewfinder feels like a long thin tunnel - it sucks! :)
If you like me want sharpness and short DOF you "need" FF. If you want shortest possible DOF with a 50 1,4 or whatever lens on APS-C you'll use it in 1,4 and it won't be sharp enough. On FF you can stop down, match the DOF of APS-C and get better sharpness. It would be crazy to make expensive fast glass for aps-c when you can make a more expensive FF body with cheaper glass that will perform the same or better.
I use my AF-lenses on k-5 and put my takumars etc. on the 5d. Great combo, but a Pentax FF - mirrorless or dslr would be perfect.

Canikon has made FF for the PRO market with very expensive glass. Not strange ordinary people has kept away from thir FF.
Pentax could release one around 2k$, shouldn't be impossible - with kit lens.
As some one att apple said (prolly Jobs) something like "people doesn't know what they want until you give it to them".
I think Pentax can figure out a FF market and launch a camera towards them with the right advertising, people needs to know why they need it, why they want it and why they must get it. I myself think I can see a quite big group of possible buyers.
If the k-5 could be sold for the IMO too high price it had at the release, a slightly more expensive FF could easily sell. 5d MK2 is not far off the price of the launch price of K-5 at the moment. The 5d is like 3 years old, and it should be cheaper to develop a camera like that today.
I don't see any problems for a successfull Pentax FF camera or two it it comes at a reasonable price.

Why make 1000 different crap cameras? Noone buys pentax compacts, because everybody know they're budget. They should make something like Panasonic LX3 and 5, but better. I rather get a phone camera than one of pentax compacts. And who really wants 14 mp on a compact? Look at a 14 mp compact camera image in 1:1 and see how little IQ you get for the money. Pentax should make phone cameras for htc or something instead.
Imagine how much more popular this camera would have been if it was f1,8-2,8 or something. And a bigger about 10mp sensor with usable iso 400.
