Lightweight Processing Software

So far, my workflow involves downloading the raw files from the SD card to a folder on the netbook entitled, "raw". I'm good at naming files. When I get home, that raw file is transfered to my desktop computer for editing. I've been shooting raw since my IstD.

DeadJohn: Thanks for the suggestion. I had browsed at Picassa using Google and immediately hit a page with raw files supported and it didn't list Pentax so I went no further. I looked again, it does handle Pentax, so I downloaded it. It's much larger than FastStone but it seems faster and more responsive when I use it. Now, to play with it enough to figure out it's logic.

StormTech: I'm just looking for options. Faststone worked and is small but I'm not discounting other options. Picassa is much larger on the hard drive but is more responsive when it runs and, after a 10 minutes peek, is simple to use.

DHodgeH: I used to use Picture Window Pro but I'm not looking to replace Lightroom4 as my editing program on my desktop. I can't remember but I think a lack of raw support might have been why I left Picture Window Pro. I did like it for color control and will take another look. EDIT: I found my old manual for Picture Window Pro and it was from 2003. I still don't remember why I left but it might have had to do with raw support.

Thanks all.

I have discovered RAW with this shot - My jaw is on the floor!!

If the shot is in good lighting, I don't think raw or JPEG makes much difference. A sunny day in the park and either will be fine. The interior of an old church where no flash is allowed or pictures in the 500-year old convent that is now a museum, and also allows no flash, is a different matter. In poor lighting, raw is great no matter how well you expose. Of course, no matter what, a proper exposure beats an improper exposure.

I shoot Pentax raw and process on my desktop computer with Lightroom4. I have a new netbook for traveling. I want a device onto which I can download my raw files and do some very minimal editing on a few to send out with emails. Most editing will wait till I get home.

I'm trying Faststone right now and I am looking for other suggestions for software that will run on a netbook and will convert Pentax raw files.

I like my 18-135. I stroll around Oaxaca and the 18-135 is what is almost always on my camera.

K5 LCD protector

I always leave my apartment wearing my camera and my first DSLR, Pentax IstD, got horribly scratched. I didn't really notice until I gave the camera to my sister and she squealed. Then I got the K10D and bought the Giotto glass cover. It worked fine and didn't scratch. After I got a K20d, with a Giotto cover, I loaned my K10d to a friends adult son for a two week period. When my camera didn't return I went to him and he looked panicked and said, "I broke the LCD." I took the camera and it was just the glass that had shatttered. I removed the glass and the camera was fine.

I don't know whether or not without the glass cover the LCD would have shattered. Nevertheless, when I got my K5d a month ago it came with a Giotto glass cover for the LCD.

How's IBIS on K-5?

For really long telephotos, in-lens is better to use. That said, since I go to old churches and shoot interiors I love the in-body stabilization with my WA lenses. I started talking photos in 1962 which was before zoom, before high ASA, before image stabilization, maybe before Canon and I am really pretty good at compensating physically. Not long ago I was wrapped around a concrete light pole taking a photo of a full-moon over a church and I saw a group of tourists laughing at me. Hey, I'm old. I've been laughed at before. Yes, I have a tripod but I rarely carry it and the churches and museums prohibit tripods.

New K5, stubby fingers, card slot doesn't want to let go of the SD card.

Any suggestions? Does it get easier?

I've had one memory card fail but it was one of my expensive ones. I did not, however, extropolate that failure to warning everyone to avoid expensive SD cards.

If you've been using LR2.7 then downloading LR3 for a thirty-day test would be quite easy.

Poll: How long will you wait for improved Video?

I would leave Pentax if the camera operation suffers in any way from the addition of video. If I want video, I will get a video camera. I also don't want a cell phone in my camera, games that can be played on the LCD, or a voice recorder.

Panorama - When to use?

I use landscape only when I can use a tripod which is almost never. The places I enjoy making panoramas don't allow tripods.

Photography classes

Since I started in photography in 1962, I certainly don't have a problem with film. I prefer digital now but film is great. But, insisting on teaching beginners with film, including darkroom processes, is foolish. I set a camera for my sister to learn with and she didn't have to fiddle with any buttons or menus. She focused on shutter speed and aperture. As we moved into composition the digital has a major advantage over film.

While I really appreciate prime lenses I also appreciate the convenience of zooms. I'm comfortable using a hand-held light meter but I'm quite comfortable with the pictures I take using the camera light meter.

In my opinion, the reason the instructor in the OP has supposedly never tried digital is that he's terrified he would learn of the advantages and he would no longer be "special".

In my opinion, an instructor today should teach with digital and the time that would have been spent on darkroom skills could be used for learning basic editing on the computer.

I live in Mexico and a photographic center gives classes. For quite some time they required a film camera with manual controls. Now, they simply require a camera with manual controls. Good move.

Silly Question

Other items I carry. I shoot mostly strolling around town so I carry doggie treats for dogs and lollipops for kids. Living in the tropics and being a klutz, I also carry antibiotic ointment and band-aids. I always have a bandana. I have a bean bag I sometimes use in, for example, churches where tripods are prohibited.

I also have a new LED flashlight and a little keyring LED light that I use making my way home after dark.

I sometimes give a moments thought to bags and other accessories sitting in my closet that looked great and just didn't work for me. Aaargh!

"Then show me a PC with the equivelent of the iLife suite. It can't come loade with crapware either."

And remember, one man's crapware is another man's iLife Suite.

There is a special level of hell for those who start PC vs. Apple threads.

How often do you change the settings for pictures?

I almost always adjust my speed, aperture, and ISO. How in the world will the camera know if I need to maximize shutter speed or depth of field? How will the camera possibly know when I'm willing to go to a higher ISO so I can use a smaller aperture or faster speed? It can't.

I normally shoot in Av mode with one wheel set to adjust ISO and the other aperture. If I need a faster shutter speed, I either change to a wider aperture or a higher ISO.

Screen protectors

My first DSLR did not get a screen protector. I wear my camera every day when I leave my apartment. When I gave that camera to my sister a few years later she pointed at the horribly scratched LCD. Although, I'd never noticed them and they didn't effect the operation at all I had to agree it was scratched, a lot. My guess is that grit from the roadway blew up, adnered to my shirt and scratched the LCD as the camera moved.

Now I use the Giotto glass LCD protector. It works fine and being glass has no scratches.

K20D to K7

When the K7 came out I looked at it and bought a K20. Hey, I'm cheap. That and I am not interested in spiffy new features, live movies or live view, than I am with the camera doing what it's supposed to do, take photographs.

For the money, the K7 didn't offer me what I wanted.

I wear a basic Panama hat. It rarely gets in the way but it it does, I push the flexible brim up or tilt the hat a bit. I wear it for sun, mostly, but it's nice in a light rain, too, since I wear glasses.

I have carried a lenspen for years and have used it perhaps twice. I use my lens cap and am careful about touching the lens. Oh, and I never eat potato chips while I'm taking photos.

OTOH, I occasionally take all my lenses and clean them at home. Perhaps once every year or two. For that, I use an approved liquid and a lens paper or microfiber cloth.

I won't carry liquid and papers in the field and I would hate to miss photos because of gunk on the lens.

Can a netbook be able to handle lightroom 2.6?

Definition of "works"? I have Lightroom on my netbook. I loads, it runs, and it is painfully slow. Beyond a few very basic functions to prepare a photo to email to a friend while I'm on my trip, it really isn't usable for me. The photos wait until I get home for editing on my desktop.
