Misc First Attempts using AstroTracer

I got my new K-30 before a trip to Bryce Canyon and decided at the last minute to splurge and get the O-GPS1 unit for the astrotracer function. I didn't get a chance to play with it until I got there and really didn't know what to expect. It was a few days before the full moon, so conditions weren't ideal, but I was surprised by what I was able to capture, and how relatively easy it was to use the astrotracer. I thought I'd share the picture and get some feedback as to how it could've been improved, what settings I should go for (I stopped down to F2.8 as I wasn't sure if 2.4 would be sharp enough, but then I was afraid setting a higher aperture wouldn't allow enough light in - This was one of the first times I was using this lens as well, as I also got it right before the trip!) Exposure was for 60 seconds. I tried different exposure times and this seemed the best. I would've been out there longer and experimented more, but my batteries ran out, and I was only there one night. Since the moon was out, I couldn't see much in the sky, so I was kind of blindly pointing the camera all over the place and taking shots at iso 25600 to get quick previews and see if I was pointing at anything interesting, then doing the longer exposure(s) This was the best one, and I marked a few of the objects I could identify (using a star chart after the fact... kind of fun!) This is nowhere near other night sky photos posted here, so please be kind. The moon was out, this was my first real attempt, and like I said first try with the GPS unit and the lens (Pentax DA 35mm AL).

Anyway, I know I need extra batteries, a star chart, and better planning. :-) What else?

For reference, this shot was without the astrotracer (and using another lens: PENTAX-DA 18-250mm) - notice the star trails, even at 30s.

Needless to say, I'm sold on the astrotracer function!

Thanks for looking and for any feedback!!

Maybe too sunny. We need the rain, but I guess we shouldn't complain!

I have a Pentax K100D, trying to find good resources to learn how to use it to its full potential.
