Well, I'm glad it works for you! I'm still stuck with the original problem, almost identical to your original post. I've tried alkaline batteries, on the off-chance that it was an issue with the rechargeables' low voltage, but no luck. Any clues at all what cured the problem for you? You mentioned trying an alternative computer - I haven't done that though. The only think I can think of is reverting to the previous firmware before I updated it.
PKtether would seem to be an excellent concept - if only I can get it to work!

Aha - something else to try! I wasn't using flash at all when I had the problems, but as you say it might possibly be a battery drain effect. I'll try again in a few days using some alkalines, rather than rechargeables - perhaps the extra volts might help. I never thought that tethering might cause a battery drain.

I use USB 2.0, no hub, original Pentax cable shooting JPG. Haven't tried with RAW yet - will do so when I am back from holiday in a couple of weeks. Only other thing I can think of is that I use XP. Still puzzled why the first picture takes OK, subsequent ones do all sorts of wierd things!

Yes, I did exactly the same (but not reverted to the previous firmware though) and I have exactly the same problem - first picture OK, subsequent ones just the same mass of jumbled colours. Let us know how you get on with the new laptop.

Doesn't look like anyone else shares this problem then! Is it unique to the K-x?

My K-x does just the same, takes the first pic OK then produces a similar effect to yours. I had updated the software before trying pk tether so cannot tell if that is the reason.

I had the same problem with my K-x. I have a number of middle-aged NiMH cells that indicate quite a high mAH figure when tested on the charger, but the crucial thing is not the mAH but the internal resistance, which limits the amount of current you can draw at any time. Most of these older cells are twice the resistance of my new Eneloops (which are brilliant!)

I can only echo the above - same problem with battery life on my k-x, same cure of a dose of Eneloops

Thanks for this information, all. I've had the same problems with this software since I got my K-x a year ago and tried everything I could think of - uninstall, reboot, registry clean etc. I've now renamed the checkinfo.ini file and all is well!
Thanks guys

Been following this with interest as I am making the same sort of decision - probably going for the Pentax. The DAL is a load cheaper, but how useful do folk find the quick-shift focus? Is it worth paying the extra for the DA?

I have exactly the same kit as you (bought from Curry's!), but wish the 55-300mm had been an option when I bought it, as I do quite a bit of bird and aviation shots. How do you find the Sigma?
I've also got a collection of old glass, I've got a Vivitar 28-90 with a sticky iris in pieces on the desk before me!

Not sure of any clubs in MK, I'm sure there must be but I don't have time to join one yet (roll on retirement...!) I'm actually in Bletchley, the other end to you. What kit have you got?

I even followed you with Zenith B and two MEs (which I still have - the Zenith I can use for an anchor...) Not into archery though!

Hi George,
Welcome!
I used to have a caravan in Broadway in the Cotswolds and loved shooting Red Kites and Buzzards (photographically that is!). I've now sold the caravan and bought a K-x, now looking for a longer telephoto for birds and nature stuff
