How many lenses do you have?

I am happy i managed to reduce my lenses to 5:
DA21, FA35, FA43,DA70 and DA*200. I rarely wish for any other focal lenght. Maybe in future will add some nice Super Takumar 50 1.4 just to enjoy manual focus shooting with beautifully constructed lens. Gotta love Takumars :)

Fantastic lenses, but quite loud at focusing. Had F*300....beautifully constructed lens, but sound scared birds off.

I doubt 55-300 will work with 1.4xTC. Teleconverters are usually designed for fast high-quality lenses.

I own DA*55 for 4 years now and never noticed any problem on mine with SDM whatsoever. Not even when the lens was left unused for month or two....

hmm...way too many: currently present are:

DA 17-70/4 and DA 20-40/2.8-4
SMC DA21/3.2
HD DA 21/3.2 - stays here
SMC FA 31/1.8 - convincing myself to let it go
SMC FA 43/1.9 - i am keeping it for sure
SMC DA*55/1.4 - nice lens, but i prefer da70
HD DA 70/2.4 - stays here as a part of my 49 3 lens kit with 21 and 43
and finally Smc A*85/1.4 - I am keeping this one, amazing lens even if used rarely

Thanks all for great insight and help.

Just to add....i went through some od my favourite photos. Between FA31 and Fa43 it is moreless a draw in terms of number of favs. So i will reconsider selling FA31....

Very true, however i am not planning to go FF. If that ever happens, i think finding pristine FA31 would be still easier than finding pristine A*85. Hence i favour keeping A*.
I agree with things you wrote. I do like 31 on apsc, on FF it must be great

Without hesitation SMC 30/2.8 for limited designation. With some reservations SMC 50/1.2 for *

Thanks, that's perfectly reasonable suggestion and yet somehow owning A*85 is beyond reason. I think it is emotional thing to own something special. But I give it a serious thought. Not before i try it for deep space photography though:).
Maybe it will go down in value, maybe not. For example the existence of FA*85 didn't harm its value really nor Sigma 85ex or Samyang85. And i did rough comparisons....interestingly A*85 had less fringing at 2.5 than HD DA70 at 2.4 when shot against bright light. That lens is extremely likeable.

Well Sandy sometimes I think I should simplify my choices and focus more on taking photos than gear. I consistently find out that i am pretty well off with using just 4-5 lenses and i take other 2-3 just from remorse. Plus selling 3 of them may help me little to finance my other plans.

Indeed, huge and heavy, although I believe next to new dfa 85 it will be quite compact. Still big enough to take on everyday walkarounds - that's why i carry da70 for normal use and A* only for special occassions.

I sort of prefer 21 + 43 over 20-40 too as it gives me large aperture at 43mm. 55 is not that big really but compared to those limiteds still feels big. I do slightly prefer reach of 70mm over 55mm however bokeh of 55 is better, rendering smoother. It clearly is a portrait lens.
No plans for going fullframe. So far apsc was more than adequate for my use.

Thanks, rumour says that FA77 optical formula was based on A85 design. One detail i always liked about 77 and it is its hood. Clever design. Same with DA15. Speaking of which: i had it, but it was simply too wide for me. 20mm focal lenght provides me with less exaggerated perspective, hence no desire for DA15.
DA20-40 is really sweet lens, but since i got 21, it doesnt get used much. Not that 21 is better, it is just more comfortable to use for me.
And yes....money is the issue, as always :(

Well bottom line is that I can use some money by selling those lenses. Having all seven is too luxurious to me. It is just difficult to decide which ones to keep. All of them are great.

---------- Post added 06-21-2020 at 02:31 PM ----------

Thanks. It is not going to happen. I was thinking od buying one, but in here 77 costs almost twice the price of 70.... it's no contest really. I already had 77 before, beautifully made lens, but old K85 was little better in my comparisons, except AF od course :)

---------- Post added 06-21-2020 at 02:37 PM ----------

:) ....that would be great, but i fear 21 would be very expensive lens. And it looks huge. Beautiful though.

I have to say, i am inclined to A. Three minimusketeers + Godzilla. 😀

Having too much expensive star and limited lenses at the moment, some of them used less than i would like to. So I was thinking about reducing it to 3 + 1specialty lens kit.

My current lenses are:
DA20-40ltd - universal lens, however i find it big and awkward for street photo. Mostly used for landscapes.
DA21ltd - I bought it for street photography, but also use it for landscape a lot. Compact!
FA31ltd - Most used for environmental portraits, landscape, some street. Great bokeh for wideangle.
FA43ltd - mainly portrait lens, but used for landscape and street as well. Works nicely with DA21 and DA70 - shares same filter.
DA*55 - beautiful portrait lens, but quite big, over the time I take FA43 with me more often. Works nicely with FA31, which has same filter thread.
DA70ltd - Can't beat the bokeh of DA*55 but has more reach as short telephoto. Great combo with DA21 + FA43. Great also for landscapes.
A*85/1.4 - this is an incredible lens. It suffers from purple fringing wide open, but its rendering outclasses everything from my collection. Great for mountain landscapes, portraits and I yet want to try it for astro photography. This is also most valuable lens i have, and will probably keep its value. Amazingly I found it almost mint. However it is big and heavy, and least used by me.

Idea here is to have 3 lenses that are commonly used and taken everywhere and one for special uses. So my options are:

A. DA 21,FA 43, DA70 + A*85 - small, lightweight, 49mm filters, nice for street, easy to carry to mountains or travel.
B. DA21, FA31, DA70 + A*85 - same as above, but FA31 replaced FA43, thus not so compact. Two filter systems needed - 49 and 58.
C. DA21,FA43, DA 70 + FA31 - main downside is that i would need to let A*85 go

What are your opinions? Thanks.

Hi all,
I am looking for advice. I tried to trigger AF200G flash wirelesly via radio trigger. Strangely it doesn't work as expected.....flash triggers continuosly in interval of few seconds. After it recharges it flashes again and again. It doesn't react to camera shutter at all, just keeps flashing in intervals. Tried Manual mode as well as ttl mode....no difference. Has anybody used this little flash succesfully with radio triggers? Strangely the trigger works flawlesly with Sigma Super and Nikon SB Flashes.
Any advice will be welcommed.

Help: M 85 or wait?

I've never had a chance to use M85, but I acquired K 85 couple of years ago. I also owned 2 copies of FA 77, one at the same time as K 85, so I was able to compare. My opinion is that FA 77 met its match in K 85. Optically and in terms of construction I even prefer older lens slightly, On the other hand FA77 has autofocus and built-in hood, and more delicate design.
Two things I will highlight - I noticed that K85 renders blue tones little cooler and doesn't suffer from purple fringing as FA77. I highly recommend K85, if you can find one for reasonable price and don't mind manual focusing.

What's so special about the 77 limited?

great photo...and the 'tree stump' is amazing too - but i believe it is more in eye of photographer. I believe YOU will be able to achieve same wow effect with lets say DA*55 for example. It is after all in the eye of photographer....

now from my experience: throughout the years i owned several 55-85mm lenses, including two copies of FA77, then Carl Zeiss Sonnar 85/2.8 (converted for Pentax), two copies of DA70, DA*50-135, K85/1.8 and finally few days ago i bought DA*55.....basically nobody will make a mistake with any of those lenses

for example DA70 is special because of its small size - perfect street lens and nice also for landscapes, but its bokeh is bit worse than FA77.
FA77 is beautifully crafted lens, nicely designed with things like retractable hood. It looks very classy....probably best looking lens from all mentiones above. Its lightweight and it renders pictures nicely.
But when i threw K85/1.8 into the mix things started to be little more interesting - my copy seems to be sharper than both DA70 and FA77, renders deeper blue tones than FA77 and has little better bokeh (i believe because having +8mm focal lenght advantage). Now there is DA*55 which amazes me - but then it is new lens to me, so I need more time to evaluate it properly.
So my personal view on FA77 - it is great lens, but has a tough competition even within other Pentax lenses. But i wouldn't say it stands apart from the other Pentax lenses of similar focal lenght - but this is just my opinion :)

SMC Pentax-K 28mm F/3.5

I bought this lens about 3 years ago....it is pretty difficult to find, but it is worth it. On APS-C is not very wide, but great for exagerated street photos and also I like to use it for landscapes, where it looks more natural than DA 15 Limited. It is bit heavy and big, has very smooth focusing ring but with short run. Very sharp in the centre of the image, resolution drops off a little at APS-C corners, but It still seems sharper than my DA17-70. It is probably on par with FA 20-35 lens, which is splendid lens too.

I had many wide angles incuding DA 15 Limited, Tamron SP 17mm, DA 16-45, Olympus Zuiko 21/3.5, Pentax SMC 18/3.5 and finally DA 17-70 and FA 20-35......i like K20/4 better than all of those except FA20-35. Also friend borrowed me his FA20/2.8 for a day, and from the pics I took I couldn't say the difference.

Bokeh is busy, having 5 iris blades, but bokeh is not priority for wide angles.

I would be interested myself how K20/4 fares against DA 21 Limited or M20/4....but so far I am very happy with it.

---------- Post added 02-11-2016 at 08:35 AM ----------

sorry for off topic too - just to add - make sure it doesn't have oil on blades, mine has so larger apertures like f11 were slower to close, thus overexposing the photos.....eventually I had to dissasemble the lens and clean it.....pretty easy to do and now it is perfect. Great thing is that it takes 58mm filters as my FA 31 and FA20-35....and hopefully if I get DA55 it will make my 4 lens ultimate 58mm kit :)

are you kidding? those old lenses were designed to cope with high resolution films, do you really think they will not handle digital sensor?
