I am actually very proud of this photo. It was taken when I was very new to DSLR photography and night photography. It was taken in Arches National Park in Utah. I took a photo of the moon with an inexpensive Tamron 70-300 lens. I used the Multiple Exposure function in the k-10D and took the second photo with the DA Fisheye 10-17mm lens at a shutter speed of approximately 25 minutes. The result is an impossible star trail with a sharp image of the moon. Waiting for almost a half hour (then another half hour for the noise reduction function) was totally worth it!

I hear ya... I am fully prepared with mostly ff compatible lenses. I am surprised nobody has mentioned the obvious benefit of depth of field. You will see a much greater difference in the individual aperture settings compared to APS-C. I am looking forward to experiencing my current lenses as new lenses on a FF body. I will most definitely keep my k-5iis' as secondary shooters.

ha, ha... I did and will do the EXACT same thing. Will be going to my brother or sister. One owns a k-01 and the other a k-7. It will be a hard choice on who to share the love with.

I agree with all said here. I am happy with my k5 iis. There are certain things that aps-c just can't do as well as a full frame no matter what. Better difference in depth of field (no, I am not saying 'greater' DOF) and bigger pixels make for less noise, and 24 mp on a FF are much bigger than 24mp on aps-c. That is why the k3 is putting up less favorable noise results than the k5/ii/iis.. more mp generally equals more noise. I am actually glad that the indication is to go the slr route vs mirror less. Pentax does best with slr, leave the mirrorless to Sony.

I agree, the lens used makes a big difference, in color, sharpness, and general 'look.' I am not sure that the shots were soft but I think in a few of them the focus was on the background vs the foreground where you might expect it. Hopefully intentional. It is important to note that this is going from a k-5. Those of us who own the k5 iis know the incredible resolution improvement of no AA filter and improved autofocus. I would like to see someone who owns the k5 iis do a comparison to see if it is worth an upgrade.

I actually bought the 70mm from Adorama, then cancelled as I reconsidered. I want to see what the HD coating is all about and the new rounded blades can't be anything but great for portraits. I will wait for them to hopefully go on sale as usual around thanksgiving.

That is a good deal with the head! I bought these legs about a month ago to replace the older version that I have of them (that still work, one of the legs sticks due to a fall I had with it on some rocks). I had the Rc4 version of the head and lasted me for a good amount of time. However after a while it couldn’t be tightened enough to prevent it from slowly moving when there was a good amount of weight on it. This was after years though, and I suspect multiple rainstorms I had it in. I prefer a strong ballhead now, but again, you are essentially getting the head for free. I love the way you can get down low with this tripod by adjusting the neck to go horizontal.

Nice shot! I was there last week as well! I was able to shoot from the small lookout tower and used the 10-17mm fisheye to get both falls and even some of the buildings. They came out fairly well, but could have been sharper as I just manually focused to infinity, which I am now regretting.

You will definitely want to utilize the good quality, high ISO capability since you are shooting indoors. It is hard to get decent pics using the on camera flash anyway, so I wouldnt use it even if it was allowed. As far as the lens goes, it will really just depend on what you are shooting, and the amount of people around that you may want to keep out of your photo. You will probably be best off starting with the 17-50, and having the 50mm at your side. The widest aperture on the 35mm is probably not enough to warrant switching it out since you can shoot the tammy at 35mm f2.8.
How I would start out is to set my k5 iis to aperture priority and use the wider apertures 2.8-3.5, have it set to auto ISO, with the ISO limited to 10,000. Also, if you go to Menu > 3 > Program Line > select the 'Running Person' icon. This will set your camera to favor the highest shutter speed, which will help avoid camera shake. And of course you will want to make sure your shake reduction feature is activated.
That is how I would do it, but there are many other ways you could approach it, I am sure. Set the ISO limit that you are comfortable with, but of course the lower you set it, the slower the shutter speed, and the greater chance of blurring your photo. I would never boost my ISO above 800 with my K7 due to noise, so the K5 iis is a refreshing change and certainly does open the door for more low light possibilities.

Adobe Camera Raw Support For K-5II/s

Hi Anvh, my settings in both programs have not changed, I have been using this workflow for quite some time, only my camera has changed. All my k-01, k7, and k10d dng files work fine between the two (all supported DNG's under PS5). I actually contacted Adobe and they confirmed the issue is in fact that PS5 does not support the k-5 iis DNG files (CR7). Their workaround was pretty much what I thought. Edit photos in Lightroom 4, export to TIF to pc, then edit the TIF's in PS5. I don't like it, but I dont dislike it enough to upgrade to PS6.

EDIT: I was just editing some RAW files from my k-7... When I exported to PS5 as TIF a status bar came up stating "Reading Camera RAW Format," in PS5. Now I remember seeing this before, when my computer is moving a little slow, when I have a lot of other programs running. I think normally it just opens it so quick it does not display that status bar. I guess this is essentially the proof that it still interacts with Camera RAW program, even when exporting as TIF directly into PS5. I am not exactly sure of the reason, but to me this does confirm what Adobe told me and what I have read elsewhere. (again, the k-7 DNG files that I export do not change in appearance in PS5). I will give Adobe the benefit of the doubt that they actually have a reason for doing this.

Adobe Camera Raw Support For K-5II/s

I totally agree with you… in theory it should not work this way, and it doesn’t for all of my third party plugins in Lightroom. I wouldn’t have come to this conclusion on my own but found a few posts on the net indicating it is indeed the camera raw version of PS5 that is causing it. PS5 must somehow hold on to some of the RAW data when it is being converted to a TIF and transferred from Lightroom to PS5. I am confident this is the issue as the only thing that has changed is that I am using RAW DNG files from the iis vs my k7. Again, my k7 RAW files do not do this, nor my older camera RAW files. Oh well, I will either just have to edit my files in lightroom, then export them to my desktop, then bring them back in, or export to one of my 3rd party plugins then export that file into PS5. In those situations this issue does not occur, it is only when I am exporting from a k5 iis RAW file to a TIF directly into PS5.

I do have it set to open with Lightroom adjustments, my working color space in PS5 is Prophoto and that is the color space I use to export my files to in all of my Lightroom plugins.

I have never had that problem either, until I got the k5 iis. All my k7 files work fine, as they are supported under my version of camera raw.

Anvh, are you shooting with a k5 iis?

50mm f1.2 pentax - M

Yup, Na Horuk is right, there is no M-50mm f1.2, there is however an A-50mm f1.2, but those are hard to find. My guess would be the same as Na Horuk, probably 1:2, which means f/2.

I would definitely either go for the 1.7 or 1.4. I would recommend the A series if you can find one, that way you dont have to manually 'stop down' the lens to get the correct exposure. The 1.7 is sharp, but the bokeh is not as smooth as the 1.4. Most likely due to the fact the 1.7 has 6 aperture blades and the 1.4 has 8. Better yet the A-50mm f1.2 has 9... but like I said, hard to find and expensive I am sure. I own both the M-f1.7 and the A-f1.4 and use the A-1.4 quite a bit. I would say the 1.4 and 1.7 are about equally sharp, but again, it is the bokeh that sets them apart.

Adobe Camera Raw Support For K-5II/s

Just to clarify, it is not that k-5 iis DNG files don't open in CS5, but the colors/white balance are definitely off. For example, if you edit a DNG in Lightroom (which is updated for the k-5 IIs), then directly export it to CS5, the photo looks noticeably different then it did in Lightroom. I have to now export it into a different program (like Nik Viveza) then save it without doing anything, then export that TIF file into PS5, to make it look and remain the same. Pretty dang tedious and very shady on Adobe's part if you ask me, not to update camera RAW for PS5. It isnt that old, and I certainly don't want to upgrade to PS6, just for that reason.

...and yes neil, I feel that these minor updates should also be included for older versions. There is a difference between update and upgrade. You shouldnt have to upgrade to get basic functionality from RAW files that come from newly released cameras. Just like when you upgrade your computer's OS, they typically will update at least the previous version of the software to make it compatible so you dont have to upgrade to the newest one. Should fall along those same lines, I am totally with you Eric!
