One angle about the K5II I never hear...

What Pentax is doing with the K-5 is the same thing Porsche has been doing with the 911. When you are nearly perfect, do you make a whole new car, or do you tweak the design? If someone offered you a brand new Turbo Carrera, would you tell them to go away because it looks just like the same body Porsche has been making for decades? (You know you wouldn't!)

The only thing I felt the K-5 lagged in was AF, and now they have fixed it. The best got better.

Can the anti aliasing filter be removed from the K5

In layman's terms, it is the filter that processes the incoming digital signal so that you do not get moire in your images, Why would you want moire? You wouldn't, ever, so why would you want to remove the filter that keeps it from happening? Dunno.

K-5 IIs - Same as Mark 2 but minus AA filter... why?

Ken Rockwell's summary says it all. If you want good pictures or good video, get the D800. If you are a pixel peeping nut who values pixels more than pictures, get the D800E. Same for the K-5 II vs K-5 IIs. I see the IIs as nothing more than saying "us too" to a questionable feature that has only rare utility in very special situations, and is otherwise disadvantaged.

How "loud" is the K-5? and do you miss FF?

The K-5 is whisper quiet. The only cameras I own that are quieter are my Minox 8x11 sub-mini spy cameras. As for FF, well, I never really thought I missed much at all, progressing from *ist-D, through K-10D, K-20D and K-7, and now with the K-5, even less so. In fact, with telephotos, I gain. My A*300/2.8 becomes equal to a 460/2.8 in FF when used on APS-C. With the high ISO performance of the K-5, I get way more than FF flim could ever deliver. It is just incredible, and any DOF loss from FF, I can compensate for by stopping down and shooting at faster ISO. The K-5 has enough excess low light performance that it is no longer relevant. Remember, with film, that big A*300/2.8 had to be that big and fast just to get the EV needed to work with ISO 64 or 100 slide film, and that was if you shot wide open, so low DOF anyway. Now, hell, I just speed the ISO up and things are now possible that were impossible just a decade ago in film, or even a few years ago on slower sensors. So much so that my F*300/4.5 is usually fast enough for any telephoto work, even stopped down. I'd say the only thing I cannot yet get in APS-C is super-ultra wide. I could put my A15/3.5. rectilinear super wide on my LX and have to avoid getting my feet in the frame. So far, my DA 12-24 is my widest in digital, but it could not equal that angle of view from the 15 on a FF film camera. Maybe a 10mm would do it in digital, but then, it was always for kicks and giggles to go that wide anyway.

Failing SDM? Re: 16-50 DA*

Turn the camera on and let it sit for at least five or ten minutes before touching a thing. The DA*16-50 has a capacitor in it that gets depleted after the lens has sat unused for a while. That is why high use lenses seldom are reported as having failed. After it has recharged, your lens may come back to life. Mine always does since I learned of this a few years ago and started doing it, and mine is on its second SDM motor after the first really did fail in 2009- (it made squeely noises which are failure signs, which it does not do now, and it has been a few years now on motor number two, so it seems to be true). If you start fiddling with it right after turning it on, the battery will never get a change to recharge the capacitor and the lens won't get itself back to life. You may have to stimulate it manually at first if it took a deep set. Once it starts working, zip it back and forth repeatedly on a low contrast background and it should be good for many days/weeks depending on your capacitor.

Hi Pentax Fans,

I'm new to the forum, but not new to Pentax by any means. In fact, I'm probably one of the longer term users, having been a steady Pentax user since the 1970's. I started with a new ME and an M50/1.7 that my Dad got me. He also got one for himself and one for my sister, so we have been a Pentax family ever since then. I've progressed over the years through most of the top line Pentax SLR's, and that would include ME, MX, Super Program/Super A, the LX system, SF-1 (gave to Sis), SF-1N (to Dad, but came back to me since we lost him in 07), PZ-1, PZ-1p. I also have almost every gadget, flash and do-hickey Pentax ever made!

Lens wise, I'd probably have to take a full inventory, but it includes almost every A Series prime from A15/3.5 and A16/2.8FE to A*200/2.8, A*300/4, A*300/2.8 and A400/5.6 on the long end, Macro A50/2.8 and A100/2.8, numerous A series zooms, all the fast 50's of every series M, A, F, and FA, plus A50/1.2 and A*85/1.4. My F series includes F*300/4.5, F70-210, FA series includes FA*24-70/2.8, FA*80-200/2.8, FA31 and FA77 Ltds. plus a bunch of lesser FA zooms from PZ-1 days.

I (used to) do my own E-6 developing and shot tons of slides. BUT, since the digital age, I've kind of haven't been using my film SLRs, though I still own almost all of the ones listed. I presently have an *ist-D, a K-20, a K-7 and just got a K-5. Also had a K-10, but my sister has that one now. (Ain't it great to be my sibling!) DA lenses include 12-24, 10-17FE, 16-45, 18-55(WR) 50-200, 55-300, 18-250, DA*16-50 (my SDM problem child), DA*50-135 and I'm sure I missed a few! Anyway, I have posted on DP Review (Mike V99) for many years, figured I should post here too, so hi to all.

Mike V.
