Cool shots, Jennifer!

Sorry about the issues, guys. I initially had trouble with the magic needles too, but just thought that was how it was designed (the KX take-up slot is bullet proof by comparison). After a couple of slipped rolls, I ended up jamming the film lead all the way in and then out the opposite side. I'd advance a couple of empty frames, then rewind lightly to tension the film and test for slippage.

Also, thanks to all for the kind offers. However I currently don't have the funds to cover the rest of the CLA, and certainly would not feel right about anyone contributing more than lunch money. So hopefully without hurting anyone's feelings, I'd like to decline the generous offers. If there are no more folks after Griz, feel free to send it back to me. If I get the MX fixed up in the future I'll be sure to put it up for another tour.

Awesome shots Steve! I especially love the parrot; the detail and lighting are just amazing. And DANG, nice shooting on the Osprey with manual focus! What kind of gimbal head do you use, if any?

Hi,

I posted a sequence of images and instructions for disassembling and reassembling the kit lens:

Pentax 18-55 DA II Disassembly/Reassembly - a set on Flickr

This is a great lens in many ways: great optical quality, excellent macro capability, and cheap and commonly available. The DAL plastic mount version has the exact same optics, and even has quick shift with the release-button trick! Unfortunately, quality control is a crap shoot. I've had five of these things, 3 of which were new. Of the new ones, I've seen loose helicoids (such that the image "shifts" visibly as you rack focus), as well as grease and wipe marks INSIDE the front optical group. WTF. Luckily, the parts between DA II and DAL versions are completely interchangeable (white kit lens + metal mount combo is quite nice).

Anyway, hopefully this information will be of help to others.

Some recent ones with KX, K50 f/1.4 and Superia400. Not really "urbex", perhaps closer to "farmex"...

Nice shots. I especially like VisualDarkness' "Leaf Structure", as well as Saggsy's B&W railway.

On the way out this morning there was a frog in front of the door, so I took a photo of it with the 18-55 II.

Cool shots Phil!

I haven't had much time to visit the forums recently (wow, it's been over a month...) Is it currently at Monochrome? Or average guy?

Regarding a European trip, I'm comfortable with it if there's sufficient interest. Say, three or more people lined up, or at least one person in Amsterdam (I'm a big fan).

Looking forward to seeing some more shots soon!

Cool shots Phil! Do you find that you primarily use red filters, or do you switch between yellow/orange/red depending on the conditions? I was thinking about trying some B&W and having DR5 process them, so was wondering what filter would be useful.

K-01 for snapshots?

That's a really nifty setup!

I have a question related to snapshot usage. Does the K-01 have a mode where the LCD can be turned off, but the camera is still on and ready to take photos? The use case I'm thinking of is fitting an optical viewfinder for rough framing and relying on the lens' distance scale for zone focus, while keeping the LCD off to save on battery life.

Just curious. Any info from K-01 owners would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reference to DxOmark. In the DxoMark article "Contrary to conventional wisdom, higher resolution actually compensates for noise", I do not notice a mention of the exposure levels at which they measure the normalized SNR.

Near the bottom of the article Clarkvision: Does Pixel Size Matter, the author presents results which indicate that at light levels closer to the noise floor, averaged noisy pixels (representing smaller pixels for a fixed sensor size) still result in lower overall image quality than less-noisy pixels (representing larger pixels for a fixed sensor size).

Does the concept of an overall "sensor FWC" hold over the entire range of exposure levels, or does it break down at some threshold? If the "large pixel advantage" is indeed an urban legend with no exceptions, does this then imply that Phase One's Sensor+ hardware pixel binning approach has no advantage over software pixel binning?

Hi Falk,

I'm curious about your assertion. It's often stated that for a given sensor size (and equal level of technology, i.e. similar photoactive area, similar noise levels, etc.), a higher number pixels implies smaller pixel sizes, thus reduced full well capacity and therefore reduced dynamic range.

Are you accounting for some kind of mitigating factors that make dynamic range irrelevant? Any information you can provide would be appreciated.

Dave: that's a pretty neat idea! For this first round I might not have time between now and when I send the MX on to gofour3. If future participants would like to forward their shots, no naughty surprises for the next person!:D

Baro-nite: I like the sound of "Mobile MX". I can't seem to figure out how to edit the thread title...?

Here are some shots from a recent roll with the MX (Provia 100f):

Hi,

This thread is a K-mount version of the Sightseeing Screwmount. Essentially, anyone interested in trying out a MX with a 50/1.7 (which I'll provide) join up on a list. Each person shoots some rolls and posts some photos in this thread, then sends the camera on to the next person on the list. Geographically, this will be limited to North America.

If you haven't had a chance to shoot with an MX before, why not give it a try? It's a small body with a HUGE viewfinder, and all mechanical operation with a very accurate built in meter. I've had lots of fun using it, and just thought it'd be cool to share the experience.

Thanks for the suggestion guys; it makes sense to have a separate thread for an MX.

I'm definitely interested in an opportunity with the SV if there's availability at the end of the list.

Hi, I've been following this thread, and was wondering if I could possibly join in on the fun.

Also, if there is any interest in having a MX body join the tour, I would be happy to contribute one as well. Kind of like a vintage Pentax roadshow.
