Fast digitizing slides with a DSLR

You have to remove the lens from the projector. Look here.
I use a 90mm macro lens on a Pentax K-70 oder Pentax K-5 II. That focal distance is large enought to get the slide inside the projector in focus.

On the website of the swiss guys who made the Filmolino Slidescan is a link to their page on GitHub with instructions for building a controller. They list all the parts from the first prototype, which didn't have a display but could be configurated with your smartphone.

For others who don't want to or can't build it, they would offer them complete and ready. I hope, that enough people will support that project.

Fast digitizing slides with the Filmolino Slidescan

I use DSLRs from Pentax to 'scan' negatives and slides, because the enhanced resolution of pixel shift comes without increasing the number of pixels.

For scanning mounted slides in magazines I use a modified slide projector and mostly the Pentax K-70 with a Tamron 90mm macro. In principle, the light source of the slide projector is replaced by an inexpensive LED Lamp with diffuse light and a mirror placed at an angel of 45° in the light shaft to reflect light falling from above towards the front of the slide. In addition, the lens of the slide projector is removed in order to capture the slides through the opening with a macro lens on a camera.

This year (2022) a company in Swizerland developed a small controller, which automates that process. It's called Filmolino Slidescan and is a little smaller than a regular alarm clock. The device alternately causes a slide change and the triggering of a digital camera.

You need your own slide projector. On a german website you find a description for the modification. Never mind the language, the pictures show enough and Google Translate can translate the text well if needed:
https://www.photoinfos.com/Fotolabor-digital/Dias-2-Projektor-modifizieren-z...n-von-Dias.htm

There is more detailed information about the Filmolino Slidescan on the maker's website.
The device is not yet commercially available because they don't know if there is a demand for it. A minimum of 100 units must be ordered to be worth producing and shipping a first batch. If you are interested, please enter it on the linked page. https://filmolino.com/slide-scan-en/

Alternatively you can try to build it yourself. On GitHub you'll find the instrcutions.

I have a prototype which works really well. The results depend on how well you align the slide projector and the camera with the lens to each other. Everything else is amazingly simple and you can digitize an entire slide magazine in minutes.

A connection to the smartphone can be established via WiFi in order to enter other values under 'Config'. This includes pauses between operations. After the slide change, my device pauses for 5 seconds before the camera is triggered. I do this to let tremors subside. Those using a flash for lighting can also use the pause function to give them time to recharge after a shot.

Early users should submit feedbacks to the developers, regarding for example whether the Filmolino Slidescan is compatible with your slide projector or not. I use a Leitz Pradovit R 150, which I could buy for €30 on eBay.

I have described my process in detail, photographed the setup and shown it here. I've been scanning films with various Pentax DSLRs for years. I pointed out a similar observation at ISO 100 and 200 from dpreview and gave the link to the source.

If I notice this effect at ISO 100 and 200 and a large test website describes it at the same time, your reply is unnecessarily unkind.
I am interested in the specific experiences of other Pentax K-3 III users who use them in a similar way.

Maybe there is an issue that can be fixed with a firmware update. To do this, however, it must first be recognized. After information in forums or on dpreview, Ricoh must decide whether to take up the topic and carry out appropriate tests.

After reading your comments and other reports on the web, I examined the exposure times of the blurred images and they were between 1/30 s and 1/80 s. The blurring looks like a second, slightly offset, weaker image, perhaps as a result of a sensorshift during the exposure. Does that sound crazy? Yes!

But do you remember that in the announcements before launching the Pentax K-3 III it was stated several times that the image quality was not only improved for high ISO values, but even for IS0 100? That had surprised me at that time.

See: https://youtu.be/cLX3H1Zblos?t=497

Perhaps Pentax engineers have come up with something clever which does not yet work for every application. Possibly indeed a pixel-shift during longer exposure times (< 1/100 s) in the lower ISO range, which should bei compensated by the processor and is used to get better tonal values with the Bayer matrix.

I cannot test this because I had to send the borrowed camera back to Ricoh.

After a firmware update (1.10) , I got the camera again for a test. The electronic shutter had been added as an option. The blurring can be avoided with an electronic shutter. Unfortunately, this has not been resolved for the mechanical shutter. It is noteworthy that five firmware updates have been released for the Pentax K-3 III in a relatively short time.
I have written a longer text about this on my German website. Google Translate can translate the text into English quite well.

I'm in contact with Ricoh in Germany. They have the body I used and can check it. The also requested my raw-files to examine them.
It is now up to the manufacturer to check whether just the body I used or more have a weakness and - if so - whether it can be eliminated with a firmware update.

Pentax K-1-II, ISO 800, 450mm, F11 and 1/350s

Again some cranes flying over a field in Germany.
An exposure time of 1/350 s is too long for such a picture. I don't even know why aperture 11 was set. I probably turned the dial by mistake. The Pentax K-1 II is also compatible with ISO 3200 for such photos. This helps avoid motion blur.

For ISO 200: 1/60 s, 1/80s and 1/100s

For mirror-up before shooting and releasing the shutter in a second step I used an infrared remote control. I didn't touch the camera or the tabel or anything on it during that.

--------------

I sent the camera back to ricoh and reported that issue. Let's see if anyone there knows an explanation.

I am currently testing a Pentax K-3 III. I took an ISO series to see the level up to which the images can be used. For me all settings above ISO 51.200 are useless. Why do they offer the higher values up to 1.6 million?

When photographing negatives (film), I see a lot of bright dots in the viewfinder screen, as if there are many tiny bubbles in the material. I've never seen anything like it on a DSLR.The issue must be in the viewfinder because the dots don't move when I move the film that is being photographed.

Photos with ISO 100 and 200 from a reprostand (camera is pointed downwards) are not quite sharp. This doesn't happen with my K-3 II and K70. I don't seem to be the only one experiencing this at those ISO-levels. Dpreview reports:

„Worth mentioning at this stage, however, is the slight (relative) softness of the K-3 Mark III at the shutter speeds used for ISO 100 and 200 in our daylight mode in particular. Despite repeated attempts using LiveView, the optical viewfinder, mirror lock-up, shake reduction (which isn't recommended for tripod shooting) and of course a self-timer, we were unable to produce a sharp image using the mechanical shutter at these particular settings due to shutter shock.“

See: Pentax K-3 Mark III added to studio test scene: Digital Photography Review

The Pentax K-3 III warms up faster than my other DSLRs.

Have you had similar experiences?

Yes. The photo shows my setup for taking pictures of films.

I also don't think that that's a problem with the shutter. Perhaps due to a mistake, there is minimal sensor movement that makes no sense.

The images were taken after mirror-up with an infrared remote control. The camera was on a sturdy copy stand. This doesn't happen with my Pentax K70 and Pentax K-3 II.

Am I the only one who thinks this feature is completely silly because Pentax DSLRs have long had an easy-to-use wheel for setting the exposure mode? It seems to me more and more as if Ricoh is selling already existing technology with this Pentax as something new and at the same time dispensing with a swivelling display.

Eleven years ago I bought the smc Pentax-DA 55-300mm ED zoom lens. This week I got the successor with PLM autofocus. Of course, I was interested in whether that was a superfluous investment or whether more could be expected from the new lens.

Apart from the quiet and relatively fast autofocus, the optical quality has increased considerably. I wrote a report about it on my website photoinfos.com. It is in German, but you can see the images and see, which lenses where used for that comparison. Otherwise google translate helps to understand the text.

Pentax K-3 II successor on September 2020

I bought my first Pentax in 1980. It was a Pentax ME. With the Pentax *ist DS came my first DSLR (in 2004 ?). I bought it because I had some Pentax lenses and also never completely stopped using film until today.
After *ist DS came the K10D as very good upgrade. I had the K20D (minor image quality), K7 (same minor image qualitiy) followed by the K-5. My first K-5 body had to be replaced because there were stains on the sensor. The image quality had improved drastically in comparison to it's two predecessors. Later I bought a Pentax K-3, which I liked. I started to miss a swiveling display with the Pentax K-3 II, which otherwise I like and still use. In addition I bought a Pentax K-70 which has a swiveling display and a slightly better image quality.

I always expected to get good cameras and lenses. But there have been some disappointments. For example my Pentax DA 4 / 300mm does not have a focus limiter and I had to deactivate the SDM because it is simply not reliable and takes too long to react.

For the 6 yeras I took photos with many cameras from other brands because, as a journalist, I write articles for German photo magazines
and therefore get a lot of new devices from Sony, Panasonic, Nikon and Canon for tests and some projects.

Therefore I know the advantages and disadvantages of different camera systems very well. It became increasingly clear that others were pulling away in terms of autofocus and optics.

I hoped Ricoh could catch up with a powerful, well-equipped camera. A camera without a swiveling display does not meet current requirements.

I won't go into your comments on the subject of mirrorless because I think they're nonsense throughout.

I don't know. Maybe I'll keep my Pentax equipment, but will not invest in that system anymore. Instead I buy a body from Sony or Nikon and gradually acquire the optics for it.

I have already taken photos with various Sony Alpha 7s and found their performance very good. This also applies to the lenses.
If you know and use the advantages of a swiveling display, for example with the Pentax K-70, Ricoh's stubbornness for me is beyond comprehension.

---------- Post added 09-16-2020 at 12:00 PM ----------

Why should I be satisfied with such a solution? If Ricoh doesn't provide a swiveling viewfinder with a modern high-end camera, there are better models from other brands that save you fumbling with a smartphone.

I don't owe Ricoh anything, and if the Pentax brand still does not bring out a mirrorless camera and in addition to that does without a swiveling display on a new high-end camera, the company has not understood the current market and will lose customers. Too bad.

Incredible. This means that the camera is not easy to use near the ground or on the copy stand. How could Ricoh make such a stupid decision?

It seems to be very similar to the Pentax K3(-II) when you lighten the shadows of the image which shows the camera on that webpage.
