Tripod mounting screw stuck in camera!!!

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all the advice. I'm found a watch repair in the village and found some small enough tools. I will give taking the base plate off a go and seeing if that helps. Other wise I'll be waiting another couple weeks until I can get to Vientiane, which is the largest city (and capital) in Laos. I'm sure there's a camera shop there.

I need to new lens also because in same instant when the camera fell, the lens got damaged also. So in the mean time, I'll be shooting with a 90mm macro and my 70-200mm until I can something that can achieve wider angles. A bit of a pain not having a wide-normal angle lens, but travel insurance should sort it out :)

Check out my blog if your are interested.

Good ideas all around however the mounting screw actually spins when I turn it. I think the bit where the mounting screw meets the camera is actually broken inside. Because at the moment not only does the screw spin in the base of camera but it can actually wiggle, a bit like a loose tooth....

Tripod mounting screw stuck in camera!!!

Hello,

I'm in a real pickle and need some help! First a little background... I'm backpacking around Asia and just the other day lost my ball head for my tripod. Right now I'm in Northern Laos so there isn't exactly any camera shops around. No big deal, I'll just have to wait a couple more weeks before I can get to a major city and buy one. So in the mean time I was mounting my camera straight onto the tripod. Worked fine it was just a hassle to get my composition right. Anyway just today the tripod fell with the camera attached and sadly the mount where the screw goes in has come loose. Now I have a mounting screw stuck in the bottom of my camera!

I have tried to remove the screws from the camera to see if the bottom would just fall off, however it seems I can't remove the bottom with a great big mounting screw stuck in it!

Any ideas???

Tamron 17-50mm, Tamron 28-75mm, Sigma 17-70mm, which lens for my trip to Greece?

My advice is the Tamron 17-50mm.

I have have previously used the Sigma 17-70mm and I was utterly dissapointed. The Sigma was very slow to focus in low light and sometimes never focused at all. It was worse than my kit 18-55. So I returned it thinking it was faulty only to find the replacement was exactly the same, terrible.

I instead went with the Tamron 17-50mm and have never looked back. Although its a little noisy, it has smooth focus in low light and has not let me down. :D

ISO: 400
Focal length: 45mm (35mm equivalent)
Handheld shot and obviously a hint of Photoshop; Saturation, B&W layer and sharpening.

I love the ruggedness of my K7. As a soldier (Australian Army) I do a lot of traveling and have been in some pretty hairy situations with the K7. Afghanistan, Kuwait, UAE, East Timor and all over Europe. Not to mention rugged Australia. I use Sigma lenses and they have also held up everytime. Snow, mud, dust, extreme cold and heat, battle. No problems. The pictures speak for themselves.

The top photo is of an Afghan Soldier taken in a Bazaar in Oruzgan Province, Afghanistan.
The second photo is of Wallman Falls (longest drop fall in the Southern Hemisphere) also a very wet place to take photos.
The third photo is of my feet whilst sitting in Jungfrau region Switzerland, forget the name of the mountain but I can assure you it was cold!
Finally the last photo shows a Blackhawk helicopter landing on a river bed in East Timor.

Might I suggest, "Your moment in time".

A lot of good suggestions here but this is a global competition. It's not winter everywhere (certainly no clouds where I am), not all of us have access to nature, the urban landscape, cars, children, fireworks, macro etc.

"Your moment in time" ...This is a very broad subject that enables all photographers regardless of location, experience or availability of kit (i.e macro lenses) to really express what they are passionate about.

So again from me ..."Your moment in time".

Sigma will make new 17-70mm/2.8-4.0 HSM/OS

Has anyone been having any issues? I just picked this one up for my Pentax K7 and I notice that the focusing seems very 'notchy', the focusing is not as smooth as I would have expected it. Focusing is very difficult in low light, the lens seems to 'jump' when searching for the correct focus. I also have a Sigma 70-200mm II HSM, focus with this lens is super fast and smooth. So I'm guessing that HSM compatability is not a problem. Any ideas as to why the 17-70 would be having difficulties? Or have I just got a dud?
