+1,000,000 about this as well. I really hope they bring this back somehow. I wish they would have gone to even further to ISO50, in stead of of taking 80 away.

Anyways, despite them not having a booth? Who is going? I get there tomorrow afternoon, and will be there for the rest of the show. It would be fun to connect with other Pentaxians. Are there any Pentax hangs already organized or should we plan something?

Ditto. I get get zero SR noise from K-5 either. Maybe it if you were recording something very quiet and only using the onboard mic. But serious video shooter is going to be using an external mic for anything important anyways, so I feel like SR noise is a moot point even if it were an issue. Also, maximizing battery life doesn't seem nearly as important as maximizes quality of footage, which seems like the trade that was made (again, unless they found a way to drastically improve digital SR). At the very least, why not give shooters the option, and let people choose whether they would prefer long battery life of better stabilization on a situational basis.

I would buy the crap out of this. It seems like the K-01 didn't make much of an impression on the photo community, but I think it was a lot closer to a winning video camera than many people realize; it was just missing a few key things.

I think they should scrap the idea of the K-0X line as a photo camera, and focus is entirely in to something that slays video, made to compete with the likes of the Black Magic Cinema Camera. Form factor and ergo don't matter if it's going to live in a video cage,. Give it a 2K or 4K sensor optimized for video, rather than trying to downsample a sensor that was made for high MP photography. Clean HDMI out, and the bells and whistles video shooters want. Drop it at a reasonable pricepoint. Now THAT would make a huge splash and turn some heads.

Damnit, are you serious?? Why no sensor shift in video? The Video stabilization in the K-5 is awesome, and the K-01 and K-30 which use the digital SR suck in comparison. I really hope that is not what this means, or that they at least found a way to make it much better. I think the ability to shoot stabilized video without the need to big IS lenses, is one of the best things Pentax has going for it in the video space. I hope they're not throwing that our the window.

I don't claim to be an expert on AA filters, but I'm going to have to disagree with you. Even though the video files are not using the full resolution of the sensor, they are still using the whole sensor. And since the the AA filter covers the whole filter, I would imagine that still has an effect on the video files, since the sensor is still reading all the pixel sites, which are individually affected by the AA filter, and then downsampling it all to HD resolution. But I don't know anything about AA filters, I'm just making all that up.

The point is, I've use the the K-5IIs on multiple shoots, working alongside a pair of normal K-5's; and on more than one occasion, the K-5IIs has had moire problems when the other two K-5's were completely fine. So, for whatever technical reason one would like to postulate, empirically, the K-5IIs shows itself to handle moire noticeably worse in video and photo settings alike, than a standard K-5 does.

Definitely not true. The thing with moire, is that it's very very specific to each and every situation and it heavily related to patterns. So if you haven't seen it yet, then you've just been lucky enough to not shoot anything that contains a difficult repeating pattern. Man made things are especially the worst. I have no idea ho the K-5IIs compares to other cameras that don't have AA filters, but I've definitely run into situations with absolutely horrid moire problems.

It's just very specific to what seems to be a very narrow set of parameters that will just throw everything out of whack. I do a fiar amount of studio product shoot with my work for Backpacker Mag, and that's definitely where I encounter it the most. I like the use the K-5IIs as much as I can, because the details are just so sharp; but it's weird. You'll be shooting backpacks or something, and ten in a row will be completely perfect, no problem at all; and then all of the sudden one pack will have such bad moire problem that the image is unusable, and there's absolutely nothing you can do except shoot it with a different camera.

But I've even seen problem, especially using it for video, where even a normal looking t-shirts with an unusual weave will make it go crazy. It's really random, and pops up at the weirdest times, but I would be very hesitant to have a camera with no AA filter as my only camera, because you can't control when something will cause a problem even if it's very rarely, and there's often nothing you can do about it. So I'm glad the K-3 has a means of dealing with it, and I'm interested to see how well it works.

Yeah, it's interesting. In the interwebs, you would think that lots of brands are being used. But Canon did the best job of catering to real filmmakers very early on, and then more people started using it, and then all the accessory companies started making the most stuff for Canon, and now it's so much harder to get other brands supported and it becomes thing big self-perpetuating cycle. I think in the novice, amateur or photography world, it's easy to think that it's relatively even. But when you look closely at people who are specifically filmmakers, not photographers, and who are truly professional, it's about 99.5% Canon (at least in terms of DSLR use). The people I know who use non-canon cameras for filmmaking are all people who are predominantly photographers or transition from photography, and already were using another brand.

Canon just came out of the gate really strong and fast and immediately started appealing to true filmmakers. I think we'll see the field starting to level out a bit, with other brands being considered more and more for filmmaking. I know the D800 has been making a lot of waves, and I really think the K-3 will get a lot more attention in the adventure filmmaking communities, know that it has the features the K-5 was missing.

Why do mirrorless cameras seem immune to this? Is it just keeping the mirror up that causes so much heat buildup? If so, you would think there could just be a simple MLU mechanism. I always assumed it was jus sensor heat, but if mirrorless don't have the issue, then it can't be that.

Thanks for the clarification, John! Do you know if it will be possible to get an uncompressed, 1080 signal output from the HDMI, so you could record raw footage to an external recorder, like the D800 and a few of the hacked Canon's can do? If that would be possible, even if through a firmware update, that would be amazing. Also, if it's possible to unlock non-interlaced 1080p/60fps that would be incredible.

This camera looks amazing an I'm super psyched about it. But either one of those updates would really bump it into a whole other level, and put it at the top of the game in terms of video production. Regardless, it's packs a whole pbig pile of punch for the small Pentax package that we all know and love. Soooo much smaller than a D800 or 5DmkIII.

I understand that, and I have no problem with shoot time limits. But the way the description made it sound, it will also just shut itself at any time if it think it's getting too hot. It's one thing to have to plan around a known time limit, it's another thing if it just shuts off half way through a take and you didn't know it was coming.

You'd be surprised (I was) how easy it is to rack up some really long takes shooting adventure stuff, especially climbing. People don't move that fast, and when someone is going for a hard attempt, you don't want to miss anything, so it's easiest to just let it roll. You can strategically cut and restart when there's a break in the action, which helps with clip length; but that doesn't really help with heat, since the sensor is only off for a few seconds.

I know all DSLRs have a heat issue, so I'm not knocking the K-3 for that. Just the notion of it randomly deciding to shut itself off, scares me a little.

Ooh, I don't like that little bit mentioned about how it will automatically shut itself off if the sensor gets too hot. That it definitely not ok for pro work. The last thing you need is to be filming something important that only happens once, and have your camera decide to shut itself off. I hope there's a way to override that. Obviously you on't want to wreck your sensor. But if you find yourself in a situation where the one-time only goods are unfolding in front of your camera on an important job, pretty sure most pros would rather get the shot and risk messing up their camera than have to tell the client you missed it because your camera shut itself off.

This would be so seriously amazing. The only thing that would make me happier would be if it had true 1080p/60. Interlaced footage is sort of useless.

The photographer is me was already very happy with the K-5, but it seems like Pentax has finally started to play ball in the video space, and has made the the filmmaker in me very happy with the K-3.

With the crop sensor, the DA* 60-250 is essentially a 100-400, and it's constant f/4 and sharp as hell across the board.

Also, this camera looks rad.

Yesterday I went out with my friends Scott and Finn to take the maiden voyage on my new (and first ever) pair of skis! I've been lucky enough to get away with demoing and sampling stuff for the last two years. But I'm getting pretty addicted to skiing, and thought it was time to have something of my own.

What a day it was! Knee deep powder all day long, skiing with two good friend who are way better than me. This is Finn, he's a total crusher on Tele's.

This was shot on the K-30 with the Kit 18-135. Always amazing me what that little combo can pull off in the right conditions. Such a great rig for adventures, when you really want something compact. I skied all day with the camera on a chest harness, and it was covered in snow and ice all day long.

Who else is out there getting some powpow?

Cheers!

I would say in that respect, as I mentioned, it's only a 4% different in in framerate. While I'm open to the possibility that thre are people out there wiht a sharp enough eye who could tell you the different, I doubt I could. And I doubt the average person could.

But the rest of my post still stands in that, aesthetic aside, if you want to be a part of any serious or professional filmmaking and it's community, it's pretty important. In a way, it's like the whole Full-Frame equals "pro" camera thing. Regardless of how true it is, most people have it in their head that 24p equals "pro" video, and Pentax is never going to win those people over without it. I can't tell you how many conversations I've had, telling people about how awesome the K-5 is, and their interest just dies completely when I say it can only shoot 1080p/25.

Same here. Printed 20-30in posters. You could pretty much put your nose up to it with no major issue. You just have to let Lightroom or something up-res the files for you, so you don't see pixelation, a it stands out to the eye far more than a bit of softness.

I'm assuming this is a serious question. And I don't mean that to be insulting, because I too once didn't see what the big deal was. Before I started filmmaking in earnest, I thought 25p, 24p, 1fps difference, what's it matter? But the answer is, massively important.

The thing with filmmaking is, there are standards. There are ways that things are just done, and for the large part, they don't change. The big thing that struck me as different with video production versus photography is that you are very often working with multiple people, the way you do things matters very much, and you all need to be doing things the same way.

For example, if you are covering an event as a photographer, it's quite likely you are working by yourself, and you can just do everything however you want, as long as it comes out good. Even if you are working with someone else, what does it matter if you are shooting at 1/200th and he is shooting at 1/30 for a slow shutter speed effect. People are used to seing different looking types of images coming from one event and even being present together.

But with filmmaking, that doesn't fly. If all you ever want to do is shoot video by yourself, and not work for other people or with other people, then it doesn't matter. But video production is almost always a group effort, with multiple cameras, and multiple shooters. It's a pain in the ass to mix framerates, and much much more than photography, when you cut together things with different looks, it just doesn't look right.

Since just about the dawn of cinema, 24fps has been the standard, and virtually all things have been shot that way. And while the winds of change are stirring in the filmmaking community, it will likely remain the standard for quite some time. Simple put, to not have the ability to shoot 24p is to not have the ability to be a part of any serious filmmaking.

I think you're very right here.

I remember talking with Corey Rich, a pretty high level adventure photographer, a while ago at a seminar. He was was of the first guys to really jump on the DLSR video thing when the D90 first came out and start trying to do serious work with it (at least among the people I follow closely). One of the first big projects he did was using a DV camera (don't remember what kind, but I'm sure it was something respectably high end for DV at the time) as the main camera, and a D90 as the B camera. He said once they started cutting it together and you could see the footage side by side, it was just astounding how much the DV footage looked like shit compared to the D90; and he's never been able to enjoy the look of DV footage since.

There's a lot of hype around DSLR video, but for the most part, I would say it's very deserved. My knowledge of filmmaking doesn't date back very far, but from my understanding of things, prior to DSLRs if you want a cinematic look to you footage, it was extraordinarily expensive to achieve. Now all of the sudden, we have a box-office feature film (Act of Valor) being filmed 80% with a camera (5DmkII) that costs less than $3000.

I would almost argue that the magnitude of the shift that DSLRs brought to filmmaking couldn't possibly be overhyped.

Thanks for the positive remarks, everyone! And thanks to Hcar for posting that shot, which I realize is missing a piece of his face. Whoops! When printed, I believe it was clipped out and cropped beyond that point so you don't see it. But I think someone just threw the full file up online and didn't notice. I've notified our web person. ;-)

I would say they are more indicative of elite level climbers than just indoor vs outdoor. While I would agree that in general, indoor climber tend to focus more on progression and the fitness of it all, while outdoor climber are more about the enjoyment; I can assure you that all of these climbers regularly crush stone outside. We very specifically wanted to use climbers instead of just really fit models.

I've certainly gotten that pumped while climbing before, probably because I don't climb often enough and need more endurance! ;-)

Adam Ondra is a cyborg. He actually just climbed a new route called La Dura Dura a few days ago, which is a long standing Chris Sharma project, and is tentatively being graded at 5.15c, making it the hardest route in the world. Pretty insane stuff! I can't even comprehend the difficulty of that grade.

Cheers, y'all!

Hey folks!

Back in December I got to work on a super fun project for Climbing Magazine's currently on the stand Training Issue. The idea was to write an in depth article on training for climbing which was to be broken down by body part, and to illustrate the kind of body climbing can give you if you keep at it. We decided to go with a set of high contrast, black and white, semi fine art pictures of actual climbers as the literal embodiment of climbing fitness. Here's the link to the web version of the article:

New climbing workouts to refresh your gym training and guarantee spring sends | Climbing

Three late night shoots with young, ripped, greased up climbers, and this is what we got. This was definitely one of my favorite projects of the year; always fun to do something a little outside of your usual projects. Be sure to click on the images and view them larger. If you get a chance, check them out in the print issue, or better yet, on the iPad. Wishing I had the K-5IIs in time for this shoot, would have been a great fit.

What do y'all think? Would love to hear your feedback!

Cheerio.

I would personally love to the the K-0x line turn into a dedicated and awesome video lineup. The form factor is perfect really. Look at where everyone is going, the FS-100/700, the RED Epic/Scarlet, the Black Magic Cinema Camera; it's all about a box with a brain and a sensor in it. Form factor doesn't matter, peripherals are better added on specific to what you need at the time.

As far as I can tell, the K-01 hasn't hit on big with the photo community, and I remember the filmmakers around here being pretty exited that it would be our answer to filmmaking, but it wasn't. It's does well, but it's not amazing. It has manual controls and a few other things, but the image from the K-5 still looks much better IMHO, and it's still missing quite a few features that would make it the bomb.

But I totally think that if they abandoned it as photo camera, put a native resolution 2K sensor in it and packed it ful of video related features, that it would be quite the popular piece of gear.
