Hi Greg,

i think the problem would be noise, as it isn't really compressible, unlike actual image information. (unless somebody likes to take photos of random noise, but most image motives look rather well organised) So if you have a raw file of a sensor which isn't really capable of 16 bit, then you would have a nice, compressible image in the top 14bits, while there ends up a huge amount of noise in the bottom 2bits, which would throw off your 2/14 figure for the added file size. (depending on the quotient of compression rate for image information vs. noise)

(since my approach is theoretical as well, it would be interesting to know how much the difference between a 12 and 14 bit raw is, but i'm not sure how to work that out)

maybe that last picture from boulanger.fr was an of earlier production sample and not supposed to go into that advertisement? The PPing of the black color of the body doesn't really look punchy enough for a promotional pic compared to the other, which all seem to be consistent wrt. the K (note also the different texture of the grip).

Hi Jean,

yes, the grammar is indeed not perfect, but it has that kind of errors a native-speaker would make. Other than that, it has a completely "native-sounding" vocabulary.
Ive added the complete german forum post, so the circumstances of this rumor ar a bit clearer.

My translation would be (i think the same as already was at the beginning):

QuoteQuote:

Hello fellow forum-members,

i am not a geek [possibly wrong use of "geek" by the wrtiter] and not a troll[red flag ;) ], but yesterday evening my trusted camera-dealer gave away too much.

I was looking at the K-01 [in the camera shop] with the result, that it isn't for me.[=i don't like it] In the ensuing conversation i was told the following:

As facts:
1) Pentax [Germany] has received the last shipment of K5 from far-east
2) Starting in may a new K5n should be available. This one has an articulated screen (expression of surprise)
3) A K3 is announced for july/summer. This is supposed to be a [weiterentwickelt~further developed] successor (=~evolution) of the K5.

For 2) and 3) there apparently already exists an announcement on paper (kind of an advertisement folder) [the writer assumes that these exist without having been told so by the salesperson, i think]

and (big surprise!):
4) there is a pro-body on the horizon (which indeed appears to be named K1)[as in previous some rumors?] which has a pro-positioning [on the market]. There was a statement, that it has *NO* APS-C sensor. But i couldn't find out ["tease out"], if it indeed was FF. ([maybe should wait till Photokina?])

Since my mate [the dealer] himself is an ardent pentaxian and knows the [Rumoren = "the rumble", ~the craving for something new (in this context)] of the pentax-fans, so i think his statements are trustworthy.

I personally would suspect that either this dealer made up some new cameras so the writer waits with jumping ship to some other brand, or the writer himself made these up for attention, but i don't really believe that this kind of information is handed out to (common?) dealerships that early.

Cheers,
Alex

Thank you for your answer!

I probably wouldn't use a separate lens hood because it would take up too much space in my camera bag. (my camera bag is rationed into DA ltd size lens spaces^^), so maybe the SL2 would be better for me in order to avoid this flare issue.

Maybe i could permanently mount a 52/49mm step-down ring onto the SL2 so i could be happy with this version in terms of filter thread size.

Additionally i've realized that ordering an SL1 version from Stephen Gandy would cost me ~150€ more than the SL2 version from a german seller, but that difference is mainly due to the projected tariffs i'd have to pay... :-/

Hi,

i have two questions about the SL1 version, so i hope it's okay if i post here:

I've read in the reviews of the SL1 version that it is not "chipped", but unfortunately i have no idea what this means. From the product pictures, the lens has an "A-position", so i can't figure out what could possibly be wrong with this seemingly wonderful lens.

Also, how improbable would it be to get my hands on a working copy of the SL1 version, as i would prefer it over the SL2 version for its 49mm filter thread?

Walkabout in Pentax 3 D Prime

based on experience (my camera bag has room for exactly three small primes) these three primes are my favourite walkabout primes: (they're also the most extreme focal lengths i own)
DA 15/4 ltd
DA 35/2.8 macro ltd
M 135/3.5

if i have to restrict myself to DA primes, i'd say:
DA 15/4 ltd
DA 35/2.8 macro ltd
DA 70/2.4 ltd (but i don't own that one yet)

If you have a manual focus lens, you can put the AF/MF switch on the camera either to MF and use the lens like a normal MF lens, or you can put it on AF.
If on AF, the shutter button won't work unless the center AF sensor (others don't work for some reason) confirms that there is something in focus.

So there is a strategy just to wait for the subject to move into focus while holding down the shutter button, or if the subject is too slow, to turn the focus ring slowly in the right direction until the subject is in focus and the AF sensor triggers the shutter.

i have some manual lenses, but i never really tried that method of focusing.

PS: you should also think about viewfinder magnification: all the entry level bodies (k-x, k-r) have pentamirror VF with smaller magnification which aren't as fun to use for manual focusing, so in your case an used "higher-end" body like k20d and k7 (i'm not sure about older bodies) may be better if you don't want to spend too much money
(my experience is based on a k7 and a k110d)

i want that one! with quick-shift and ltd-size and possibly ltd-styling (and retractable lens hood?) so it doesn't look weird next to my other lenses :D
(...and 49mm filter thread of course)

i've owned a FA 50/1.4 for a year and the only thing that really kept bugging me was the lack of quick-shift. :-/

so you want the multiple image sensors to move around inside the camera to get rid of the gaps in between them?
Because that's exactly what this panorama camera does, scan the entire 6x17 image plane with an (almost) one-dimensional pixel-array (hence the low prices starting from 21.5 k€)

and minimal exposure time of one second isn't really suitable for certain kinds of photography (but no problem for landscapes i guess :) )

i really like your idea! especially the FF one on your blog, which also would work with smaller wideangle-lenses=)
(see M 20mm/4 vs. DA 21mm/3.2, which almost have the same dimensions)

*the sensor doesn't necessarily have to be at the same spot/have the same orientation as the focusing screen, you could put it nearer to the mount for example to save room behind the sensor.
I think it is optimal to maximise the yellow area in my drawing, under the condition that the sensor doesn't obstruct the light.
Or you could mount the mirror sideways and put the sensor stuff into the grip, thus saving more space for an EVF

*i've read once that the shutter should be as near as possible to the sensor to avoid diffraction at high speeds=small slit between shutter curtains. but i have no idea at what speeds/distances to sensor that effect is really relevant

*Tilting the mirror and shifting the sensor would do the same thing in terms of shake reduction, with different "side effects":
whereas shifting the sensor doesn't alter the focus plane, tilting the mirror does (as you've mentioned in your blog) As before, i have no idea how big these effects would be quantitatively, i.e. if you could even see in the photo that the focus plane was slightly tilted.
I think that, because of the lightness of the mirror and the "leverage"(move the mirror a tiny bit equals big shift of reflected light to sensor), tilting the mirror could be far more effective in SR-terms than shifting the sensor.
maybe it would make sense to implement mirror-SR only, as the current sensor-SR systems seem to add a lot of width and length to the sensor unit, which would make the whole camera bigger.

Now i hope that one day i would really have a FF-EVIL based on your idea, it is indeed very different and potentially better =)

Alex

EDIT:

hmm i think there once was a thread dedicated to interesting ideas for the upcoming pentax "mirrorless" camera, maybe we should move the posts to this thread?

i've looked at existing pentax lenses, and indeed wide-angle FF lenses with the same FOV are much smaller than their APS-C-equivalent due to the unchanged register distance, even the FA 20/2.8 is quite a bit smaller:

_____________diameter x length weigth
DA 14/2.8 APS-C 83.5mm x 69mm 420g
M 20/4 FF ______63mm x 30mm 150g

FA 20/2.8 FF ____70mm x 43.5mm 255g

dimensions taken from www.bdimitrov.de/ultra-wide since there's no information about the barrel diameter on the pentaxforum sites.

i think Falk meant that 1200 euro minus the VAT, which is maybe 20% or a little less.
so 1200 - 240 = 960 which is much nearer to the 1374usd dxo cited.

i agree, this is very confusing, especially since dxo says that the K-7 was introduced for 1900$

does the d7000 have ISO 80?
if not then it probably won't come up with such a high DR number(since K5 scored their peak performance there and it's the base ISO), maybe it isn't even the same sensor

that makes sense, thank you!:)...if i'm not mistaken the A/D converters sit on the sensor...so would it be cheaper to produce (slightly) lower quality sensors with just 12bit?

i've looked up the (geizhals) prices and it seems that the alpha 55 and the a580 are roughly the same, so it would make sense for them to share their 16mp sensor.

the d7000 does 14bit(according to dpr), but what about ISO 80?
(edit:which also could tell us something about the sensor...maybe)
editedit: the nikon website says ISO 100 for the d7000, so that means it won't have the kick-ass ISO 80 DR?!?
