Brand new K3iii (jet black no less - so i won’t be able to see the controls in the dark) !
We are leaving for the Kenwood Light Trail (London, UK) - an outdoors 2 km slow hike through a wooded Christmas light exhibit trail after dusk in 60 minutes !
What settings ? (As automatic as possible.)
Will use my 18-135 zoom.
Thank you.

I have the original 77mm (meaning prior to the new coating-release) and i see no reason to replace it. My sense is that CA can be easily addressed in post.

I bought mine used several years ago. It is my favourite lens; it was my first premium expensive lens and proved again that sometimes one gets what one pays for..
I love the 3-D feel of the images I get from the 77mm.
I also use it sometimes for landscapes.

Apologies for possibly hurtful comment coming up here - not my intention. KP size - is it really smaller ?

answering my own question: (taken from the official reviews on this site)
K5iis: 130.5 x 96.5 x 72.5
KP: 131.5 x 101 x 76

Not sure what 'feels' or 'packs' smaller means - - does this refer to the absence of the deep right-sided grip on the K5iis ?

Thanks.

KP size - is it really smaller ?

I own and am very happy with my K5iis, however it is getting a bit long in the tooth.
Occasionally I read how ergonomic and comfortable is the small size factor of the KP - a camera I admire and have considered upgrading to for its updated sensor and - - - for its small size.
However, when I look at the specs of the two cameras, it appears that the KP is actually not smaller than the K5iis...
So if i want to upgrade, however great the KP is, i just may decide to wait for the new (crop sensor) camera rumored to be coming out later this year...
Thoughts ?

"Replacing my k5iis - need input on upgrading or replacing"
I bought a K5iiS when it came out (is this now 5 years ago ?). It is my primary camera, and I love it. But although it is working well, i occasionally think about my options in case it were to malfunction - and my shutter count is likely higher than the figure you cite for yours.
Others have already replied to your request for advice, so I am only echoing what was said:
the KP seems to be a heck of a camera - a superb APS-C camera by any measure - and there are great deals on new ones now at B&H and likely Adorama too; the price of used K1's may be coming down; and to check out the repair options a fellow Forum member just mentioned.

Someone posted the link to an interesting discussion of FF mirrorless cameras in another thread today.
I will add it here in case it helps your thinking about this.

Kudos to Forum members who showed such infinite patience (and took the OP in such utmost seriousness) to expound ad infinitum and ad nauseum on some very basic concepts...
Unless the OP was playing us along - which frankly I would not rule out - there seemed to be minimal-to-no uptake of some of the basic principles that Forum members were patiently and redundantly explaining - such as the implications of RAW vs JPEG, the consequences of sensor size, why IQ actually can be important...
(I am purposely using the past tense b/c I hope this thread is done.)
No disrespect intended; to the contrary, as I said i admire fellow members on their patience !

I neglected to mention, dear Original Poster, that I like some of the photographs you have shared with us very much.
You wrote several times that you consider yourself a beginner; the composition and exposure of some of these photos are really very good !

Your Advice/Opinion Needed

Honestly - I'm a snob - kind of. I like to be different.

(I hung onto Mac when all the lemmings were deserting Apple for the WinTel computer world - - and lo and behold I was vindicated ! (Wish i had bought stock though - that's another story.))

So when i got into digital SLR photography - all i saw 8 yrs ago was Nikon and Canon. So - Pentax was the obvious route for me to take.

Now the rest of the story - and the following is reason enough even if you don't get my idiosyncratic approach:

Superb glass - and lots of it - and backwardly compatible.
Not a company that comes out with a new model every three seconds for marketing reasons.
Robust, usually weather-resistant construction in cameras and lenses.
The equivalent cameras from Pentax tend to be smaller and lighter that the equivalent from Canon and Nikon.

in what format to store RAW files on external storage drives ?

Hi all,
not sure the title is correctly worded - apology if not. but this is a beginner's query. I'm not a beginner photographer - but I'm essentially so when it comes to post-processing, and even to computer storage - the latter is the focus of my question.

when I offload my photos to store them on my external hard drives - should i be storing as PNG or is it okay to use the default PEF format ? (almost all are in RAW - and I have thousands....). I'm at the point where i need to offload photos b/c my hard drive is full...

I don't really do post-processing - it's called procrastination - altho i use the basic tools in Photos on my MacBook for cropping and basic exposure tools. I have never used the Silky Pics software that came with my K5iiS when i bought it 5 or 6 yrs ago.

Thank you.

medium format lenses on crop-sensor body ?

hmmmm.... given the immediate - and decidedly affirmative (but admittedly bare-bones, with all due respect) - response to my query - perhaps i should rephrase my post:

Can I use Pentax medium format lenses on my K5iis ? Any advice regarding how to do this ? Suggestions and technical comments would be welcome, as well as do's and don't's and etc.

(I have a nice selection of lenses that i use on my K5iis (including 15mm, 31mm, 77mm, 100mm, and some zooms), so i'm not looking to do anything but experiment until i decide to finally buy a 645z or similar.)

Thank you !

FA 31mm Limited - $780 (lowest price in 2 years)

In the meantime - while i was cautious and therefore did not order this lens through Eagle Camera c/o Amazon when the $780 deal as announced - now, for $119 more Adorama has this lens at $899, which is about $200 less than the usual $1097 price. Adorama - therefore no worries about gray market and the like.
They also have a financing deal of 6 months without interest.
(NO - i do not work for Adorama ! Although i guess it may sound like it. (I am a physician in Ann Arbor, Michigan.)) I have had my eye on this lens for a year or two and the combination of a $200 price drop from a reputable dealer plus the ability to spread the purchase price over 6 months sealed the deal for me.
I have owned the 77mm lens for a few years. These are "pixie dust" lenses !

Adam, is this potentially in the category of 'too good to be true'? Or ׳buyer beware׳?
I don't know Eagle Camera. What do you know about them ?
Might there be a real warranty ?
Adorama was selling this lens yesterday for - I think - $899 - which I think is already close to $200 less than the usual price of $1096.
I lust after this lens, hope to buy it when I can scrape the funds together.
So - I follow this with interest, as do others.

Greetings Rick "former lurker now formal colleague and eloquent contributor to our Forum" Denney !
I have been more consistently perusing the Medium Format section the past few weeks, and I have been struck by your thoughtful posts. I did not realize till today that it was only recently that you formally joined our ranks.
Your erudite and well written contributions are really helpful to me personally as i plan what i hope will be an entry into Pentax medium format. Your 'lens reviews' and other entries are already a significant resource and add to our 'data base'.
A belated welcome !

Upgrade from 645D to 645Z now or better wait until next 645 is out?

"A lot of speculation... I am finding it hard to make up my mind..."

Thank you to the OP - i see that telepathy works !
I have been thinking about moving up to medium format for several months. My hesitation is the ? of what Ricoh/Pentax intends to do - both because the 645Z is getting long in the tooth and because, frankly, of the alternative choices that are out there.

I am a Pentax jingoist (a term i prefer to 'fanboy'). But does loyalty have its limits ?

I like the idea of smaller/lighter - hence the Fuji medium format camera is attractive. It gets good reviews and i have read that firmware updates have addressed some of its initial problems. On the other hand, Fuji's MF lenses are expensive and it doesn't have the decades of significantly less expensive legacy glass of Pentax medium format.
And - did I say that I am loyal ? (But - I also posed the question of limits to loyalty.)

Thoughts? Please weigh in! I welcome others' thoughts and speculation, advice, even thinking out loud.
Thank you.

weather-resistance works !

Hiking the south coast of England at Christmas - definitely rainy season there - I got caught in one of the most impressive cloudbursts i have ever experienced. Since we had to attend to children I had no chance to cover my K5iis that was slung across my body in a simple BlackRapid strap.
The camera and the attached Pentax 18 - 135mm lens were drenched over the course of the next 15 minutes until we reached shelter.
Result ? No problems !

Now - i know that weather-resistance does not equate with weatherproof. (I have an Olympus Tough point and shoot that i use underwater - a line of cameras made and advertised for underwater use - and even with this line of cameras the manufacturer provides lots of warnings and caveats...)

So i usually (not this time) take common sense precautions with my Pentax K5iis and lenses.
I also occasionally check ports and compartments to be sure that the covers are securely in place.

I know other manufacturers make some weather-resistant gear, but Pentax' tradition of attention to weather-resistance is one thing that drew me to it when i started into digital photography a number of years ago. This recent experience (and i've had several others) of being caught in rain and snow with my K5iis underline for me the wisdom of my decision.

Better Portrait Lens? FA 77 1.8 vs DA 55* 1.4

Interesting decision:
1) You decided to buy the Pentax FA 77mm.
2) You bought a different lens.
3) You are out $XYZ and you still don't have the 77mm lens.

(Pray tell - someone - what am I missing ?)

4) You WILL regret this decision - of COURSE you will.

I have not used the 55mm, but I bought the 77mm about two months ago and it has rarely left my camera !
Our grandchildren visited this weekend - i don't know if I have ever had better results in portraiture (primarily candids, these kids don't sit still) !
There is that 'pixie dust' factor that people mention with the 77mm...

The only lens!!

Well, this ONE is easy - or so I thought !

It's gotta be my SMC (not HD) 15mm ! Love that sharpness, love those vistas - i can get lost in them ! Love those sharp starbursts ! Love the ergonomics, the lens hood, the total experience ! Such amazing shots of The World !

Then - on second thought - and as others here often write - it's got to be that amazing 77mm - it makes even amateurs like me into skilled portrait photographers ! And it's won all those awards as Best-in-Universe-Pentax-lens-of-all-time, right ? I bought it two months ago, still learning its many versatile uses.

But then - as I await Adam's email message to arrive any minute now (or, Adam, are we doing Pony Express ? or smoke signal ? or skywriter ? or telepathy ? - - just tell me, i can't wait -- how are you going to notify me of my winning entry in the holiday season 31mm lens sweepstakes today ?).
Because that will be my forever-and-a-day single lens that i cannot do without !!!

(fine print: but it will be easy to hide those small 15mm and 77 mm lenses on my person - even after i've 'won' the 31mm !
THE prime trifecta - actually PERFECTa - the 15mm, 31 mm, 77mm - no Canikon trio can hold a candle to this trio !)

I ignited a minor controversy there - and thank you Gray for fanning the flames (or should I say fanning the starburst?) !
A few further bits:
As the only lens if that were the question - again tip of the hat to Gray regarding the vistas it can capture.
Regarding the latter - emphasis on "can" capture - because yes as Nielpolar and Digitalis both point out this wide an angle poses challenges - but that's part of the fun.
My preference for the SMC version of the 15mm over the HD is steadfast ! If there are going to be starbursts (I happen to like them a lot) then I'd want them to be sharp (a la the SMC version with the sharp aperture baldes, not the wimpy quality of the HD with the rounded blades. Personal preference of course ! I would refer the interested reader to the SUPERB review (published right here on the Pentax Forum) of the five new HD lenses compared to their SMC counterparts. This was published when the HD lenses were released - was it two years ago ? (help me moderator !).
And of course if I am ever going to be able to afford the 31mm f1.8, then all bets are off - again ! (Wow - a reprise of October's best all-time lens controversy !)
