Macro + DOF experiment... surprising results!

Hi everyone, so today I tried to compare 2 macro set-ups of mine.

1) 100mm f4 bellows takumar with around 100mm extension tubes

vs

2) tamron 90mm 1:2.8 di sp macro.

Here are the two images taken of the same subject, with both lenses set at f/11:

Tamron:
full image:

100% crop:

Bellows Takumar:
full image:

100% crop:

So the surprising results are that the 4 element bellows takumar annihilates the di sp macro! It has more magnification with the tubes, while at the same time better quality of image and way larger DOF!

If someone could explain to me why the DOF varies so much, I would be appreciate it as I am a bit surprised by this.

Cheers,

Yaro

Hi everyone.

Just recently finished personalizing a new web page. After hand designing my previous page I decided to instead go with an edited version of something already out there.

Please check out

Any design/content comments, ideas and criticism more than welcome!

Thanks

Good colors. I think it would be nicer with a more open aperture to blur the background a bit more. It's a bit distracting right now.

So I decided I've been playing too much with modern lenses lately. Took out my old time favorite, and remembered why it's so freaking awesome.

ALSO: can someone can help me with why the colors of this image change when on the web? Second image was converted to SRGB and looks like original, first was saved as normal jpg in photoshop CS5

Macro Searching for color

Went out for a macro session with my handheld rig. Found some really nice bugs and locations for standout/complimentary colors. I have to admit, I played a bit with point/parametric curves, but did not touch hue/saturation/vibrance etc.

Photos were taken using directed diffused flash.

Each photo is a crop of roughly 3000 pixels wide (out of 4000)

How to really identify a early Super Takumar 1.4/50 8 Element

I'm contributing to this thread with some images I have shot with one of my 8 element 50/1.4's.

It is by far my favorite "arty" lens.
The speeds these were shot at are 1/4000, 1/2000, 1/4000,1/1500. I'm guessing 1 and 4 are wide open, 2 maybe @ f2 and 3 at f8. Camera is k100d.

I use the tamron as my main macro and portrait lens. Many reviews say it is superior to the pentax 100mm macro.

DOF vs lens zoom (& reversed lenses) -technical discussion

Wow, thanks for the info guys, lots of stuff I didn't know.

As in regard to DOF at the same aperture for varying focal lengths, I'll have to test myself if it's much of a difference. If I can achieve 2 or 3 times the DOF at the same aperture with my DA 35 then I'll probably put up with the non-existent focal distance inconvenience and use that as my main macro lens...

Will report back with some findings this weekend!

Hi fellow pentaxians.
Tomorrow I am spending nearly all day at the casino shooting their Football Grand Final celebrations. I will be doing a fair bit of walking around, and want to keep my kit light. All of the photography will be indoors at distances 2-20m, and mostly of events as opposed to portraiture. I should not use a flash.

My relevent equipment list is as follows:
Pentax K-x (white)
Pentax k100d
Pentax DA 35mm ltd macro
Tamron 90mm di sp macro
Pentax DA 18-55 AL II
Pentax DA 18-55 AL
Pentax 50mm f1.4 manual prime

other:
external hotshoe mounted flash
2x sets eneloop battereies
2x flash memory cards

I was thinking I will only bring my k-x with the DA 35mm & 90mm tamron, spare batteries and memory.

Since this is my 1st event, would any of you kind people have advice?

Cheers

Yaro

If anyone knows much about DOF vs focal length and in reversed lenses, could you please check out my topic here:

I realise the working distance varies greatly, but what I was surprised to see is that at 1:1 magnification, the 35mm had a larger *calculated* DOF than the 90mm. Is this correct?
