Which body came in many colors?

I loved the colours and thought at the time that photography was fun once but now it is just boring and all about ' i have better gear than anyone else ' and it feels like you cannot be an individual or do something different , pack mentality . This is what Pentax tried to do , personalise your camera and have fun with it . Smart phones come in many colours now and people love it . Once again Pentax was way ahead of the game .

Big camera theft in UK

Anyone that buys a camera without doing some basic checks is a fool . It is so easy to trace any cameras serial number from the image metadata that is embedded in every digital file and checked on every online photo sharing site these days . The insurance companies are right onto this and it is so easy for them to do , but the idiots that buy cheap and unchecked then post a file on social media will surely be caught and will have some serious explaining to do . If the cameras are film then they may get away with it as there is no metadata embedded in the film negatives as far as i know . I read a couple of years ago that sites like Flicker have already done checks for stolen camera serial numbers on every file ever posted on their sites . So basically when buying camera equipment be sensible and do as many checks as possible and help stamp out this awful cost to small and big business from theft . This can destroy many of the small camera stores that we all enjoy browsing through world wide , otherwise we will only have online stores to purchase our gear from that are safe from this kind of theft .

Pentax 150-450mm tripod mount keeps working loose

Locktight Mate . Should work well especially if it has worked loose a couple of times as it may never stay tight without it .

Steadify, a tripod/monopod substitute (on Kickstarter)

This would work very well at a set height . The way the monopod attaches to the belt is clever and would be great while hiking . Many years ago i used the belt gimbal type of fishing rod support and a monopod connected to the camera . This is a similar setup . The biggest downfall of this system is when tracking wildlife you need the monopod to adjust in length as you move the camera up or down . The higher you go the more the monopod comes away from the gimbal and you loose any advantage of support back to the body belt . Of course you have to adjust the length of the monopod , otherwise there is no support back to the belt and you cannot have the monopod leg lock always loose otherwise you never have support at any length . I am not sure how they have addressed this issue . This would work very well at a static support position where things are all locked at one length . Back then i bought the gimbal with great expectations for success when originally thinking about this idea but did not realize at the beginning the need for different lengths at different camera heights while tracking birds and my idea was a fail . I now use the gimbal belt for fishing and still use my tripod for photography .

My favourite Cockatoo of all of the amazingly different Cockatoo variety's from Australia . They occur in some of the harshest desert areas that we have here and their striking colour pattern never ceases to amaze anyone fortunate enough to see them .Regards Anthony .

I have been out of action for a while now but i did manage a few trips last year to the western parts of Australia .
Here are a couple of links of some slide show presentations mainly of birds that i captured last year . All of the shots were taken using my Pentax K3II and the Pentax 150-450 lens , including all of the flower shots .

You Tube

You Tube

I have found that the Pentax 150-450 and Pentax K3II are a great robust combination and have handled all that i can throw at in in some very harsh conditions without worrying about the gear being knocked around . So overall i am very pleased with the gear , having used it for a few years now . I mainly shoot in TAV mode and manually adjust compensation as needed . For in flight shots i have various user modes set up also using TAV mode with varying shutter speeds and quickly select a user mode that has a shutter speed that suits the light situation and also adjust compensation as needed . I always wait until i have sharp focus before starting any burst rate when following birds . Sometimes when the light is low i wish for a faster lens but i seem to get by in most situations .
Regards Anthony

I did not realize the you tube videos would not be shown automatically at full size here . If you press the You tube logo on the bottom task bar of the video you will be able to view at a decent size . I could hardly see the birds at this small size here .

[/COLOR]Nicely done . The Cuckoo looks very similar to our Fan-tailed Cuckoo , in fact the image could have easily been mistakenly thought to be captured in Australia had you not been from HCM city with the bush looking very similar to our native Lillie-Pillie . You have a nice variety of birds around your home .

My last couple of posts were taken at the 150 end of the lens and with small apertures . These two were from the 450 end and larger apertures . First at F/5.6 and the second F/7.1 . Both shots are of Australasian Grebes diving . The first is also presented as a high key type of shot with a very slick bird . The second has frozen the power take off before diving .

Hi ,
F/10 on the 100mm has given you a bit more DOF than the 150-450 @F/9 so it does look a little better . A bit sharper also . Both look quite good though . I still think the 150-450 mm lens is a cracking lens and use it extensively in the field for the many varied opportunities that you come across without worrying about changing lenses ..
Anthony .

---------- Post added 08-13-2017 at 09:35 AM ----------

Hi Allen ,
I love the yellow and orange tones in this one . Bright and cheerful . I see you have used F/8 for this image . I often use F/13 for close up work with this lens and i am very happy with the results , good DOF . Certainly no negative effects when used for close up work , although i would never use F/ 13 for telephoto work and generally stick around F/7.1 to F/8 if i have good light only .
Anthony .

---------- Post added 08-13-2017 at 09:46 AM ----------

Here is an another example of using a smaller aperture with this lens for close up work . In this example i have used F/11 to get the needed DOF . As with my hover fly shots [ f/13 ] that i previously posted , i do not believe there is any negative effects to using smaller apertures for close up work . What do you all think ?
Anthony .

Back button Focus

Hi Adsouza ,
I use the back button on my K3II like this . Moving subjects : hold the back focus button on continuously while tracking the subject and either pressing the shutter release selectively or hold on while capturing the subject . If it is something like a bird moving in a tree , i hold the back focus button continuously on and fire shots with the shutter selectively while the subject is moving but if the bird stops moving i release the back focus button momentarily while using the shutter button to get the shot . A bit trickey to get used to but it will become easier with practice . The theory here is the camera is not trying to find contusion focus on the bird when the bird stops moving and therefore less moving actions which could soften the image via motion blur . I have done this sort of focusing for many years and believe it is the only way to go with moving wildlife photography . You must be set in continuous focus mode with rear focus button activated and have the shutter set up release only [ no focus ]on the shutter button .

Hot Shoe Issue

Hi Dave ,
I had a similar accident and ripped the top of a friends K5IIS . Had it replaced by CR Kennedy in Melbourne . $150 around about from memory . They sent me all the broken top parts after the repair was done as they replace the whole top of the camera to fix it . I would advise strongly against drilling into the top of the camera as there is quite complex wiring all around the inside of the top camera body . The 4 screws that hold the hot shoe on are screwed from the inside . The plastic Pentax flash foot is designed to shear off before damaging the camera mount . But i had a third party flash which had a metal foot and the result was the whole hot shoe mount came away from the body . The flash base would have been around $50.00 to repair .

Last Week-end Adrian M and i were comparing our 150-450 lenses side by side and my tripod foot was wobbly compared to his which had no movement at all . I had not thought about that again until i saw your post and sure enough when i removed the foot the 4 screws that hold the plate to the lens body were loose . Tightened them and the wobble is gone . Thanks for the tip .

While out around Bourke last year in the spring the wildflowers were in full bloom . The hard red dirt is transformed into a carpet of colour . I decided to do something a bit different With The 150-450 zoom . I set the tripod perfectly level with my K3II camera in portrait orientation and DFA zoom lens set to 150 mm , i then proceeded to take 96 photographs of an open space that had a mainly white carpet of flowers . Three left to right rows of 32 RAW DNG photos each row . When i got home i stitched the 3 rows together one row at a time in Photoshop then stitched the 3 rows into one . I had a huge file that when you zoomed around it at 100% the detail is awesome . This resized file will not show that detail but shows the scene that was laid out in front of me .

I use a Benro C4580T carbon fiber Tripod [ rated at 25 kg ] and a Benro GH2 gimbal [ rated at 23 kg ] , quite a nice stable combination . I have had these for several years now and they have been faultless . A bit pricey , but i have learnt that you get what you pay for in tripods and Gimbals . I can mount the K3II , Dfa 150-450 on this set up and walk all day carring it over my shoulder . I also take a small bum bag with batteries and converter in it . If necessary i will also take my 540 flash and a home made flash extender that i use which is much more compact than the better beamer .
Regards Anthony .
